Four life-size ships were made for the film in Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad.
Was (and still is as of 2024) by far the most expensive Malayalam language film ever made, with a budget of 1 billion Rupees (about 13 million US dollars), almost double that of the prior record holder two years prior, Mamangam: History of the Brave (2019) and its 550 million Rupee budget.
The actors playing the younger and elder Kunjali are actually son and father in real life, Pranav Mohanlal being Mohanlal's son.
Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal (both of whom have collaborated with writer/director Priyadarshan on many of his Hindi language films) as well as Nagarjuna Akkineni all turned down roles in the film.
While based on real events and people, writer/director Priyadarshan estimates that his film contains 30 percent of history and 70 percent of fiction, in part due a lack of reliable written historical sources. He also decided to take the artistic license to include historical characters who weren't contemporaries of each other.
