Debuting tomorrow at TIFF before heading for competition slots at San Sebastian and London, Laura Carreira’s On Falling looks set to be the breakout British title from this year’s festival circuit.
Recent examples include Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun and Georgia Oakley’s Blue Jean. And Carreira’s On Falling, the latest feature from Sixteen Films, depicts an equally dark and politically driven slice of contemporary society. The film follows Aurora, a young Portuguese woman who struggles to make ends meet across one week in her adopted home of Glasgow, Scotland. Long days spent grabbing packages off shelves for an anonymous e-commerce giant barely cover the bills and leave her exhausted and desperate for something more.
Per the synopsis: Aurora seeks to resist the loneliness, alienation, and ensuing small talk that begin to threaten her sense of self. Set against a landscape dominated by an algorithm-driven gig economy, designed to keep us apart.

It’s been nine years since Athina Rachel Tsangari’s last film “Chevalier,” a mordant contemporary satire of toxic male ego and destructive dick-measuring contests. Much has changed in the Greek writer-director’s third feature “Harvest” — her first English-language work, her first literary adaptation and by some measure her most ornate and expensive production to date, set some centuries in the past — but the theme of petty, ruinous patriarchy holds strong. Taking on British author Jim Crace’s Booker-shortlisted historical novel about a farming community undone by parochial distrust and encroaching capitalism, Tsangari’s vigorous, yeasty period piece occasionally loses the thread of its sprawling ensemble narrative, but transfixes as a whole-sackcloth immersion into another time and place.
Quite what time and what place is up for debate, however. As in Crace’s novel, neither is specified, though the accents and craggy-lush landscape — the film was shot on location in Argyllshire,...

Venice Film Festival competition title “Harvest,” directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari, is one of three films at the festival to be represented for sales by the Match Factory as well as being produced or co-produced by the company.
The other two are “Edge of Night,” the debut feature by German-Turkish director Türker Süer, screening in Horizons Extra, and “Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass,” an animated film by the Quay Brothers, playing in Venice Days.
Tsangari, the director of “Attenberg” (winner of Venice’s best actress award in 2010) and “Chevalier” (2015), returns to Venice competition with “Harvest.” Over seven hallucinatory days, a village with no name, in an undefined time and place, disappears.
In Tsangari’s tragicomic take on a Western, townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk and befuddled lord of the manor Charles Kent are childhood friends about to face an invasion from the outside world: the trauma of modernity.

Generating robust admissions for UK independent film at the global box office remains a challenge, but the figures do not paint the complete picture of what marks a release as a success, according to Stephan De Potter, CEO at Benelux distributor Cineart.
De Potter was talking about the release of Georgia Oakley’s debut Blue Jean, a feature debut and Venice premiere that was backed by BBC Film and the BFI.
It garnered $357,412 at the box office outside of the UK, and $384,232 within the UK, according to Box Office Mojo.
“It was not great [in terms of admissions], but we were very happy,” said De Potter.

“Hallelujah,” was the message from BFI Filmmaking Fund director Mia Bays as she took to the stage at Glasgow Film Festival on March 7, to celebrate the next generation of UK talent.
“[Representation] has transformed over the past few years,” said Bays, who pointed towards the post-Times Up and MeToo movements and the impact of BFI’s diversity and inclusion targets as part of what has helped drive the opportunity for new voices to break through.
“One of my favourite terms is ‘opportunity hoarding’. There are lots of people who just sat on those opportunities, who have kept them. All of those conversations have led to this.

Any year in which an unlikely summer double bill became a global moviegoing event — with one film soaring toward $1.5 billion in worldwide grosses and the other closing in on $1 billion — can’t be considered bad news for Hollywood. But the Barbenheimer phenomenon aside, bad news plagued the film industry for much of 2023.
The strikes of the writers and actors guilds shut down production for five long months, causing major titles like Dune 2 to push back to 2024, leaving fall festival red carpets sparsely populated and disrupting a release pipeline in ways that are sure to have a ripple effect for the next year or two.
Theatrical grosses remained inconsistent, struggling to regain pre-pandemic momentum for most genres except horror (all hail, new scream queen M3GAN; a big hand for Talk to Me), and even the once-reliable cash cow of the superhero blockbuster sputtered more often than not.

Just in time to ruin Christmas, gruesome horror comedy The Mean One, is out now on DVD and Digital Platforms from Altitude Film Distribution.
David Howard Thornton, the award-winning actor who plays Art the Clown in the hugely popular Terrifier movies, stars as The Mean One, a gruesome grouch in a Santa suit who is intent on causing Christmas carnage. Directed by Steven Lamorte (Bury Me Twice), The Mean One also stars Krystle Martin as Cindy, who takes on the Christmas killer with a baseball bat wrapped in tree lights.
Like recent horror hit Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, The Mean One is another buzzy slasher mixing mirth, murder and all-out action in equal measure, as the townsfolk decide to take on the green meanie with all the weapons they can lay their hands on. Already a viral sensation (over 5 million people have watched the trailer online) The Mean One...

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Now here’s an interesting piece of trivia: for the second year in a row, a first-time feature has topped our best films of the year list. That makes our cheeky little kick-off line — “just how good were this year’s debut features? One of them has already been crowned our best film of the year, and it’s got plenty of company” — both easily repeatable and simply true.
But, more than that, it proves an adage we’ve been touting for years: the art of cinema is alive and thriving. There are always good movies. There are always good directors. And there are always rising stars worthy of attention. This year is no different. Last year wasn’t either. And we’re feeling pretty good about 2024.

The Gotham Awards traditionally mark the unofficial beginning of Oscar season, giving the best and brightest of the independent film community the chance to descend upon New York City to celebrate the year’s best works. And while the ceremony once again kicks off the awards calendar with its Monday after Thanksgiving slot, new changes to the eligibility rules means that a wider range of films will be allowed to compete this year
In the past, only films that cost $35 million or less were eligible for the awards, which inevitably shut out some of the biggest Oscar contenders in order to highlight smaller films. But that cap was eliminated in 2023, allowing major productions such as “Barbie” and “Ferrari” to get in on the action. A total of 20 films, 11 series, and 30 performances were nominated for this year’s awards.
Keep reading for a complete list of nominees at the 2023 Gotham Awards.

“Past Lives” was the big winner at the Gotham Awards on Monday evening, taking home the top prize for best feature. “Anatomy of a Fall” won best international feature and best screenplay — both of the categories it was nominated in. Meanwhile, acting honors were won by Charles Melton for his supporting performance in Todd Haynes’ “May December” and Lily Gladstone for her lead performance in “The Unknown Country.”
“Thank you, Gotham, for this award. It’s such an honor. It really means the world to receive it with my debut set in New York City, a city I live in and love deeply,” writer-director Celine Song began, taking the stage to accept the best feature award. Song thanked her producers at A24, along with her cast and crew. She was joined on stage by two of the film’s stars, Greta Lee and John Magaro.

On Monday night, November 27, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the Gotham Awards presented the winners at their 33rd annual event. “All of Us Strangers” went in with a leading four bids, followed by “Past Lives,” “The Zone of Interest” and the TV limited series “Beef” with three apiece. But who prevailed? Scroll down for the full list, updated throughout the night.
The nominations were decided by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. The winners were then selected by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking. That makes these awards unique and often results in surprising winners like “The Rider” for Best Feature in 2018 over the higher-profile “The Favourite,” or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) for Best Lead Performance in 2022 over eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). A romantic drama about childhood friends separated for years, “Past Lives” is the front-runner for Best Feature and Breakthrough Director for its first-time filmmaker Celine Song. Could it achieve a clean sweep by winning its third nomination for lead performer Greta Lee? As Pride Month unfolds, it's always expected to see some queer stories find their way into the release schedule. Blue Jean is a prime example, arriving in American theaters this past weekend after a smashing critical reception in its home country. This declaration of independence is being addressed to her off-on, and very much out, girlfriend Viv (Kerrie Hayes). “Of course it is,” Jean’s partner tells her, and the hint of affection in her voice could almost be mistaken for pity. This is England, 1988 — Margaret Thatcher still rules with an iron-lady fist, and she’s...
