Austria can celebrate a huge success as a filming location thanks in large part to attractive funding programs that have lured major international productions to the country, among them Guy Ritchie’s “Fountain of Youth” and Jaume Collet-Serra’s “Cliffhanger” reboot, while also boasting a strong lineup of local works at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

Introduced in 2023, the incentives, known as Fisa Plus and ÖFI Plus, can cover as much as 60% of costs for international film productions.

In addition to magnificent natural landscapes, medieval towns and striking cities, a new state-of-the-art studio complex in Vienna now offers a comprehensive range of services to support productions in the Austrian capital.

“Since the launch of the Fisa Plus funding program two years ago, Austria has emerged as a strong player in the film industry,” says Austrian Film commissioner Nina-Anica Keidies.

Stranger Things‘ Sadie Sink stars as a singer whose voice has the power to change the world in Searchlight Pictures’ O’Dessa trailer. Described as an epic rock opera, O’Dessa will have its world premiere on March 8 at SXSW Festival in Austin before streaming on Hulu on March 13, 2025.

A much-needed film funding reform in Germany has become critical for the local industry and for Berlin’s Studio Babelsberg in particular, as it welcomes new management and bids farewell to longtime head of production Henning Molfenter, who has launched a new company.

Studio Babelsberg appointed former Warner Bros. exec Joerg Bachmaier as new CEO in November and in December brought in industry veteran and producer Marcus Loges to succeed Molfenter as managing director of Studio Babelsberg Motion Pictures.

The company has hired Fifth Season’s Prentiss Fraser as President of Fox Entertainment Global. It comes two years after it launched the global sales arm and amidst a search for a statement hire to lead the team responsible for selling shows such as Joel McHale-led Animal Control and Dan Harmon’s animated series Krapopolis to international broadcasters and streamers.

Germany’s film and TV industries will kick off 2025 with an overhaul to the country’s funding system for productions that, besides providing a local boost, is also good news for Hollywood.

The German parliament on Friday, in its last session before being dissolved, pushed through a watered down version of the country’s long-gestating new film funding law that will basically streamline the process through which local productions get subsidies that are financed by various levies, including on movie admission tickets.

The still partly provisional new law also raised Germany’s existing cash back production grant by 5% to 30%, which “makes Germany more competitive for incoming productions,” says producer Philipp Kreuzer, who is among the founders of Munich-based Penzing Studios and has been servicing Hollywood productions such as the second season of Nicole Kidman-starrer “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “Cliffhanger 2″ (pictured above).

Maisie Richardson-Sellers has been cast as a series regular in the upcoming AMC series “The Talamasca,” Variety has learned exclusively.

The Talamasca is a secretive group featured in a number of Rice’s novels. The official logline for the show states that it will “focus on the men and women responsible for tracking and containing the witches, vampires, and other creatures scattered around the globe.”

‘Harbin’ To Be Present At Christmas

Poised to be one of the biggest blockbusters of an uneven year for Korean cinema, “Harbin” is finally confirmed to release on Christmas Day (Dec. 25). The movie had its premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival but its distributor and financier Cj Enm chose to hold back the commercial release in its native Korea until the busy end-of-year season.

The period action film follows Korean independence activists who launch a daring attack against the Japanese occupying forces in Manchuria (modern-day China).

It is directed by Woo Min-ho and stars Hyun Bin (“Crash Landing on You”), Park Jeong-min (“Decision to Leave”) and Jeon Yeo-been (“Cobweb”), who were all in action at a press launch event Monday in Seoul.

Netflix has shared a first look at Apple Cider Vinegar, which is a true-ish story based on a lie about the rise and fall of a wellness empire, the culture that built it up, and the people who tore it down.

Set at the birth of Instagram, Apple Cider Vinegar follows two young women who set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, influencing their global online communities along the way. All of which would be incredibly inspiring if it were all true.

Directed by Jeffrey Walker, the true crime series was inspired by The Woman Who Fooled The World: Belle Gibson’s Cancer Con, and the Darkness at the Heart of the Wellness Industry by Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano.

Samantha Strauss, Anya Beyersdorf, and Angela Betzien (Total Control) are the writers of the series.

The Film Awards will take place on Jan. 3, 2025, with the festival running from Jan. 2 to Jan. 13.

Well, perhaps the ex-Scotland Yard detective of the title. Tamara Lawrance stars as Millie-Jean Black, an investigator who returns to Kingston, Jamaica to work missing persons cases.

Per the official synopsis, Millie “soon finds herself on a quest to save a sibling who won’t be saved, to find a child who can’t be found, to solve a case that will blow her world apart and prove almost as tough to crack as Millie Black.”

Richardson-Sellers will next be seen in a lead role on the upcoming second season of Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers opposite Nicole Kidman. She most recently was seen starring in Hulu’s LGBTQ+ psychological horror film Jagged Mind, directed by Kelley Kali.

Exclusive: Nine Perfect Strangers maker Made Up Stories has optioned Australian writer Zoë Foster Blake’s novel about modern entrepreneurship and motherhood ‘Things Will Calm Down Soon.’

The book is billed as “a vibrant, candid look at what it means to be ‘successful’ in today’s world.” It follows 30-year-old A-list stylist Kit Cooper who is restless despite her success.

Per the synopsis: “When she decides to launch her own product, we go with her as she builds a brand, team and multimillion-dollar business while single parenting, managing an unreliable partner and a dysfunctional wider family, and far too many school WhatsApp messages. When Kit finds herself in the alien world of investors, suits and mergers and acquisitions her relentless anxiety, imposter syndrome and head-spinning busyness begs the question: will things ever calm down? “

Before the premiere of "The Acolyte" earlier this year, many people wouldn't have recognized the name Manny Jacinto. Born in the Philippines and raised in Canada, the Filipino actor had very few roles to his name, though he had garnered a burgeoning fanbase for his work on "The Good Place." But once you enter a galaxy far, far away, it's hard not to become quickly recognizable. In his surprising dual role as both Qimir and the mysterious Stranger, Jacinto solidified himself as one of the most promising young stars working in Hollywood.
