Austria can celebrate a huge success as a filming location thanks in large part to attractive funding programs that have lured major international productions to the country, among them Guy Ritchie’s “Fountain of Youth” and Jaume Collet-Serra’s “Cliffhanger” reboot, while also boasting a strong lineup of local works at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.
Introduced in 2023, the incentives, known as Fisa Plus and ÖFI Plus, can cover as much as 60% of costs for international film productions.
In addition to magnificent natural landscapes, medieval towns and striking cities, a new state-of-the-art studio complex in Vienna now offers a comprehensive range of services to support productions in the Austrian capital.
“Since the launch of the Fisa Plus funding program two years ago, Austria has emerged as a strong player in the film industry,” says Austrian Film commissioner Nina-Anica Keidies.

Stranger Things‘ Sadie Sink stars as a singer whose voice has the power to change the world in Searchlight Pictures’ O’Dessa trailer. Described as an epic rock opera, O’Dessa will have its world premiere on March 8 at SXSW Festival in Austin before streaming on Hulu on March 13, 2025.

“Set in a post-apocalyptic future, O’Dessa is an original rock opera about a farm girl on an epic quest to recover a cherished family heirloom,” reads Searchlight Pictures’ synopsis. “Her journey leads her to a strange and dangerous city where she meets her one true love – but in order to save his soul, she must put the power of destiny and song to the ultimate test.

A much-needed film funding reform in Germany has become critical for the local industry and for Berlin’s Studio Babelsberg in particular, as it welcomes new management and bids farewell to longtime head of production Henning Molfenter, who has launched a new company.
Studio Babelsberg appointed former Warner Bros. exec Joerg Bachmaier as new CEO in November and in December brought in industry veteran and producer Marcus Loges to succeed Molfenter as managing director of Studio Babelsberg Motion Pictures.
The studio has remained active with such recent productions as Tom Tykwer’s Berlin Film Festival opener “The Light,” Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” and Robert Schwentke’s thriller “Control,” starring James McAvoy and Julianne Moore. It’s starting the new year with three series productions on its backlot: Season 2 of Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers,” “Ten Percent” for Disney+ Germany and Season 5 of local hit “Babylon Berlin.”

Netflix’s pop-infused comedy-drama Apple Cider Vinegar is on its way to becoming the streamer’s latest viral hit.
A thoughtful and infectious twist on the true-crime genre, the show chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of Belle Gibson, the Australian single mother who launched a wellness empire by convincing the world she had brain cancer and was successfully curing herself with an all-natural lifestyle. “All of which would be incredibly inspiring… if it were all true,” reads Netflix’s official logline.
Launched by Netflix last Friday, Apple Cider Vinegar was created by award-winning Australian writer and producer Samantha Strauss (Nine Perfect Strangers, The End), who scripted the series with up-and-coming talents Anya Beyersdorf and Angela Betzien. The show was loosely inspired by the non-fiction book The Woman Who Fooled the World, written by Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano, the two journalists who broke the story of Gibson’s con,...

When Kaitlyn Dever signed on to lead Apple Cider Vinegaras Australian wellness influencer Belle Gibson, she had no idea she would end up in a sequined dress, dancing to the slithering strings of Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” But that’s exactly what the Phoenix-born, Los Angeles–living actor found herself doing after Samantha Strauss, creator of the limited series, pitched the idea to her.
“The way Samantha’s brain works is just so inspiring to me,” Dever tells Tudum. Soon enough, Apple Cider Vinegar’s quartet of stars went from rehearsing the number to slipping into shimmering, golden mini dresses that sway to the beat in the series premiere’s opening montage. The women hit their steps as emojis swirl, bottles of the titular wellness elixir explode, and news reports portend Belle’s looming fall from grace.

What would you do if you created a website and everything you said or did was met by a heady rush of likes, heart emojis and many, many positive comments from a devoted number of followers spurring you on to do even more?
In Netflix’s “Apple Cider Vinegar,” premiering Thursday Feb. 6, that is exactly what happens to two Australian wellness influencers in the mid-2000s. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with promoting wellness but in these cases, one influencer, Milla Blake, started her website while seeking alternative treatment for her cancer. The other, Belle Gibson, did the same with one grievously frustrating difference. Gibson did not have cancer.
Through six tragi-comedy episodes, writers Samantha Strauss (“Nine Perfect Strangers”), Anya Beyersdorf (“The Twelve”) Angela Betzien (“Total Control”) and director Jeffrey Walker explore not only the glamorous world of early influencers but how easily those seeking help and community for their...

Exclusive: Hulu is not proceeding with Downforce, opting not to pick up the comedy pilot starring Eve Hewson and Murray Bartlett to series, sources tell Deadline.
From the Silicon Valley duo of Alec Berg and Adam Countee, Downforce follows Victoria (Hewson), the estranged daughter of a storied racing team’s owner, Sir Trevor (Bartlett), who is thrust back into the family business, leaving the pair to find common ground or risk destroying the team’s legacy.
The cast also includes Harry Delano (Freud’s Last Session), Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen), Amar Chadha-Patel (The Decameron) and Arturo Del Puerto (For All Mankind).
The project, a dream pairing of two in-demand actors in The Perfect Couple and Bad Sisters’ Hewson and The White Lotus and The Last Of Us‘ Bartlett, originated at the now defunct ABC Signature where Barry co-creator Berg and Countee had been under overall deals. The banner was...

The budget for Severance season 2 increased to the point that it reportedly wiped out all of the production studio's profit. Severance season 2 has returned to Apple TV+, three years after the first installment premiered. Although some of that extended gap between episodes comes down to strike-related delays, the production process was also slowed down by disagreements between the showrunners and changing ideas about what the second installment would look like.
Due to reported animosity between showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman, not to mention scrapped scripts and aborted storylines, the cost of Severance season 2 rose to $20 million per episode. New details underline where some of that cost went. It also explains what the price tag means for Fifth Season, formerly known as Endeavor Content, which produces the sci-fi thriller.

Commenters under Netflix’s Apple Cider Vinegar trailer seem to think the teaser gives off real Inventing Anna vibes. Both shows focus on women who draw unsuspecting victims into their web of lies. In Apple Cider Vinegar, the liar at the series’ heart is an Australian influencer who lures followers in with claims she’s found a new way to battle cancer.
“Set at the birth of Instagram, Apple Cider Vinegar follows two young women who set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, influencing their global online communities along the way. All of which would be incredibly inspiring if it were all true,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “This is a true-ish story based on a lie, about the rise and fall of a wellness empire; the culture that built it up and the people who tore it down.”

The series sees two young women promote possible cures to their life-threatening illnesses. ‘Mufasa’ Star Tiffany Boone Dreaded Singing. Now She’s on the Oscar Shortlist for Best Original Song

Tiffany Boone was done with voiceover auditions when the script for an unspecified lioness landed in her inbox.
“I just thought I was so bad at voiceovers,” Boone confesses. “I’d been trying for years and never booked a single thing. I quit probably a year or two before I got this audition — obviously, my agents didn’t listen and sent me this anyway.”
She owes her agents a thank-you note. Boone, 37, not only landed a part in the Disney prequel Mufasa: The Lion King, but was cast as central figure Sarabi, the queen of Pride Rock, otherwise known as Mufasa’s mate (and Simba’s future mom).
It was, to hear Boone tell it, kismet, seeing as how The Lion King was her favorite film growing up. “I’m not lying,” she says. “Lion King was number one. Number two was Aladdin. And number three was Beauty and the Beast.

Germany’s film and TV industries will kick off 2025 with an overhaul to the country’s funding system for productions that, besides providing a local boost, is also good news for Hollywood.
The German parliament on Friday, in its last session before being dissolved, pushed through a watered down version of the country’s long-gestating new film funding law that will basically streamline the process through which local productions get subsidies that are financed by various levies, including on movie admission tickets.
The still partly provisional new law also raised Germany’s existing cash back production grant by 5% to 30%, which “makes Germany more competitive for incoming productions,” says producer Philipp Kreuzer, who is among the founders of Munich-based Penzing Studios and has been servicing Hollywood productions such as the second season of Nicole Kidman-starrer “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “Cliffhanger 2″ (pictured above).

Nicole Kidman is literally the epitome of grace and talent, and she has always stood tall. With her statuesque frame and mesmerizing screen presence, she has undoubtedly conquered Hollywood, delivering powerhouse performances that have blown our minds away.
But believe it or not, there was a time when her fabulous height was more of a Hollywood hurdle than a standout feature. Yes, the very trait that makes her iconic today once had directors scratching their heads and saying, ‘Next’. And honestly, how could one of the most bankable stars in the world ever be considered as “too much” of anything?

As a young actress, Kidman’s impressive 5’11 stature often worked against her. And the casting directors were apparently wary of pairing her with shorter male co-stars, deemed her “too tall” for many leading lady roles. Seriously, imagine being turned down not because...

The story of the courageous leader of the Pride Lands, Mufasa, has finally arrived and it’s roared up a star-studded cast.
Written by Jeff Nathanson (“Young Woman and the Seas”) and directed by Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”) comes the origin story of Mufasa and his brother Taka, who fans eventually know better as Scar. The film is centered on the two lions, who befriend one another as cubs from very different backgrounds. In an effort to evade a deadly foe, the two work together in a cross-country adventure through which they meet young lioness Sarabi, wise mandrill Rafiki and bossy hornbill Zazu.
Donald Glover and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter reprise their roles as Simba and Nala, but there’s several newbies who have joined “The Lion King” pride. Take a look at the cast below.

A popular Hulu series has been renewed for season 3. The streaming platform, which debuted in 2007, was originally developed as a service for watching recent episodes of traditionally broadcast series online. While this aspect of the platform's original intent remains to a certain degree, thanks to their partnership with FX, they have since begun to operate as a more typical streaming service, offering licensed movies and television shows alongside original programming. The platform is now owned by Disney and their library features a great deal of crossover with Disney+.
It wasn't until 2011 that Hulu original series began to debut on the platform, followed by original scripted shows in 2012. Over the years, they have debuted many shows that were both critical and commercial successes. This includes the Margaret Atwood adaptation The Handmaid's Tale, which has won 15 Emmys and two Golden globes, the restaurant dramedy The Bear, which has 21 Emmys and four Golden Globes,...

‘Harbin’ To Be Present At Christmas
Poised to be one of the biggest blockbusters of an uneven year for Korean cinema, “Harbin” is finally confirmed to release on Christmas Day (Dec. 25). The movie had its premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival but its distributor and financier Cj Enm chose to hold back the commercial release in its native Korea until the busy end-of-year season.
The period action film follows Korean independence activists who launch a daring attack against the Japanese occupying forces in Manchuria (modern-day China).
It is directed by Woo Min-ho and stars Hyun Bin (“Crash Landing on You”), Park Jeong-min (“Decision to Leave”) and Jeon Yeo-been (“Cobweb”), who were all in action at a press launch event Monday in Seoul.

Netflix has shared a first look at Apple Cider Vinegar, which is a true-ish story based on a lie about the rise and fall of a wellness empire, the culture that built it up, and the people who tore it down.
Set at the birth of Instagram, Apple Cider Vinegar follows two young women who set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, influencing their global online communities along the way. All of which would be incredibly inspiring if it were all true.
Directed by Jeffrey Walker, the true crime series was inspired by The Woman Who Fooled The World: Belle Gibson’s Cancer Con, and the Darkness at the Heart of the Wellness Industry by Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano.
Samantha Strauss, Anya Beyersdorf, and Angela Betzien (Total Control) are the writers of the series.

“Get Millie Black” is exactly what it sounds like: Someone is on the run, but who can stop them?
Well, perhaps the ex-Scotland Yard detective of the title. Tamara Lawrance stars as Millie-Jean Black, an investigator who returns to Kingston, Jamaica to work missing persons cases.
Per the official synopsis, Millie “soon finds herself on a quest to save a sibling who won’t be saved, to find a child who can’t be found, to solve a case that will blow her world apart and prove almost as tough to crack as Millie Black.”
The HBO limited series is created and executive produced by Booker Prize award-winning author Marlon James. Joe Dempsie, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr, and Chyna McQueen co-star.
“Get Millie Black” is produced for HBO and Channel 4 by Motive Pictures. Creator James executive produces along with Jami O’Brien, Simon Maxwell (CEO Motive Pictures), and Leopoldo Gout.

Fans of Big Little Lies are still waiting for word on a third season, but there’s a good reason why it’s being delayed!
Debuting in 2017, Big Little Lies became an instant hit for HBO. Based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, it focuses on how a murder rocks the town of Monterey, California, although it took a while for the viewers to discover just who the victim was. The death soon opens the door for various secrets to be revealed that show the dark side of this seemingly sunny hamlet.
The show stood out thanks to the stunning cast with Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Reese Witherspoon, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott and more. It was met with huge critical acclaim, including winning Emmys for Best Limited Series and acting wins for Kidman, Skarsgard and Dern.

Sally Rooney recently stunned the entertainment world when in a newspaper interview, she said her experience of adapting her much-loved coming-of-age novel Normal People for the BBC and Hulu left her feeling like TV was “not a world where I belonged.” Accordingly, the in-demand writer has since said no to offers to option her third book, 2021’s Beautiful World, Where Are You. The same will be likely for her latest, Intermezzo.
Rooney’s decision was especially surprising given the TV market has been so driven by book IP, with option prices rising sharply and demand bigger than ever. In fact, around a year ago, we hear drama commissioners put out a call to TV makers. The broad message was “IP over original ideas as often as possible.” While books have long been the engine of television and film, the notion everything must come with proof of concept has shifted the dial.

Nine Perfect Strangers season 2 is in the works, and it already looks like the show has begun recruiting some talented stars. Season 1 is an adaption of the novel of the same name by Lianne Moriarity, whose other work, Big Little Lies, was also adapted by showrunner David E. Kelly and starred Nicole Kidman in the lead role. The plot for season 1 followed a group of strangers, escaping their lives and attempting to find inner peace at Tranquilliam House, an unorthodox wellness center overseen by an equally unorthodox founder Masha, (portrayed by Kidman).
At the time, Nine Perfect Strangers proved to be a hit with viewers, with its premiere making history as one of Hulus most-watched original series ever and its cast receiving much praise. Though season 1 of Nine Perfect Strangers was a massive hit for the streamer, the fate of the show beyond it's debut outing was never certain. Since...
