Nicole Kidman‘s 2024 is jam-packed with projects, and she’s explaining why.
The 57-year-old actress has already starred in her Netflix movie A Family Affair and the television shows Expats and The Perfect Couple.
That’s not all, though. Her movie’s Babygirl and Spellbound are following before the end of the year alongside the second season of her show Special Ops: Lioness.
While attending the premiere of Lioness on Wednesday night (October 23), Nicole revealed why she’s keeping so busy.
Keep reading to find out more…
Speaking to Variety, Nicole said that she would consider taking a break from work. But at the moment, her jobs serve a larger purpose.
“In this weird way there are so many opportunities in terms of being able to be of service to the people who are coming up, and using what I have and can do for people like [Babygirl writer and director] Helena [Reijn],” she said.

Success and heartbreak can sometimes collide in the most defining moments of our lives, and leave us questioning the bittersweet nature of such experience. Australian actress Nicole Kidman has recently been subjected to one such moment, possibly for the second time in her career.

There are actors who like to work and actors who love to work. Nicole Kidman has always belonged in the latter group. But lately, the two-time Emmy winner’s rigorous efforts to entertain have started to backfire. People are taking issue with her performances, her projects, and the overlap in each — specifically, when it comes to TV. What began as mere observations of chance similarities have escalated in recent months to reverberating reproach. Is Kidman making too much TV? Too much bad TV? Or is she simply a victim of timing and circumstance, as all famous and assiduous thespians are at one point or another?
Solving the problem begins by recognizing there is one, and in Kidman’s near-decade of steady TV work, patterns have emerged. Many of her TV picks — starting with HBO’s “Big Little Lies” in 2017 and running through this September’s Netflix series, “The Perfect Couple” — have been book adaptations.

If you’re missing your end of summer dose of a murder mystery entangled with an upperclass family committed to the facade of perfection, look no further.
“The Perfect Couple,” which is adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name, centers on a murder investigation that happens just hours before the Winbury family is set to host the perfect Nantucket wedding to welcome their new daughter-in-law Amelia (Eve Hewson) into the family.
The queen of the genre, Nicole Kidman, leads the Netflix series as the family’s unflinching matriarch, and is joined by an ensemble cast including Hewson, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy and more.

On the impeccably white sandy beaches of Nantucket, the wedding of the year is about to happen. Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) is preparing to marry Benji Winbury (Billy Howle), the son of the glamorous and monied Winbury family, headed by icy matriarch Greer (Nicole Kidman.) A famous novelist with cash to spare, she doesn’t approve of her son’s fiance. But before the festivities can begin, a body is discovered on the beach. In a wedding party full of people with their own secrets, it falls upon Nantucket’s chief of police, Dan Carter (Michael Beach), to investigate.
It’s surprising that it’s taken this long for someone to adapt an Elin Hilderbrand novel into a binge-ready TV series. Known as “the Queen of the beach reads,” Hilderbrand’s Nantucket-set sagas are loaded with sex, scandals, rich people problems and interior decor porn that would put Nancy Meyers to shame.

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in April 2024. It has since been updated with new performances from Kidman.]
Nicole Kidman is the rare actress in the 21st century who, like the stars of Hollywood’s golden years, doesn’t disappear into roles so much as elevate films by her mere presence.
She’s certainly swung big at mainstream blockbusters (think: the “Aquaman” films) that might feel out of her step with her character-driven work elsewhere (like most of the films on the list that follows). But that’s because the Australian icon is unafraid of any role, whether stripping down her post-Oscar, A-lister veneer to film Lars von Trier’s Brechtian “Dogville” in Sweden, slipping into a bathtub with the 10-year-old possible reincarnation of her dead husband in Jonathan Glazer’s “Birth,” or, yes, donning a fake nose to play a suicidal Virginia Woolf for her Oscar-winning turn in “The Hours.”

Nicole Kidman said in a new interview with L’Officiel that she’s never just seeking a paycheck whenever she decides to star in a major Hollywood tentpole. Given the Oscar winner is acclaimed for her work in indie films and dramas, she always gets questioned whenever she signs on to star in big movies like the “Aquaman” franchise or 1995’s “Batman Forever.”
“Everyone’s like, ’Why are you doing that?’” Kidman recalled about the confusion her “Batman Forever” casting as Dr. Chase Meridian. “I’m like, ‘Because I get to kiss Batman!’…The thing people don’t understand is, it’s not about the check. A lot of the mainstream big blockbusters that I do are hopefully different.”
Kidman got the same questions when she signed on to star as Queen Atlanna in “Aquaman,” a role she reprised in the sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Surely she did not...

Nicole Kidman has never shied away from trying something new in the film industry. You will often see her stepping out of her comfort zone to play complex characters, including the time when she played Virginia Woolf in The Hours, for which she won an Oscar. Coming in from the Australian film industry, Nicole Kidman had to prove herself in Hollywood, and boy, she sure did.

Is Jack Huston about to give Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky a run for its money? What is this blasphemy upon which I speak? I’m talking about Jack Huston’s Day of the Fight, an upcoming underdog film packing a lot of heart that Falling Forward Films recently picked up for distribution. Today’s Day of the Fight trailer introduces Jack Huston’s directorial debut and what looks like a powerhouse performance from Michael Pitt.
Today’s Day of the Fight trailer presents Huston’s black-and-white indie film about a once-renowned boxer on a redemptive journey through his past and present. The film chronicles the boxer’s arc from his first fight to his release from prison and beyond. Judges are already eyeing Day of the Fight for awards consideration. Joining Michael Pitt in the film are Nicolette Robinson, Ron Perlman, John Magaro, Anatol Yuse, and Steve Buscemi as primary cast members.

Earlier this year, we learned that Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg is re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn – and now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the great character actor Peter Stormare has joined the cast of the film to reprise the role he played in the video game, therapist Dr. Hill! Which makes sense, because if you’ve already had Stormare play a character, why replace him with someone else?
Stormare joins previously announced cast members Ella Rubin of The Idea of You and the upcoming Fear Street: Prom Queen, Odessa A’zion of the recent Hellraiser reboot and the sitcom Fam, Michael Cimino of Love, Victor and Annabelle Comes Home, and Ji-young Yoo of Expats and Smoking Tigers. Now that we at IndieWire have landed on the best movies and TV shows of the year so far, let’s dive into the best performances on either screen in 2024 up until now.
We’re now in the thick of Emmys season ahead of the September 15 awards, which actually makes this year’s the second Emmys ceremony to go down in 2024, as the strikes pushed 2023’s event to this past January. All of this is to say we haven’t stopped talking about glorious TV performances in 2024, and our picks for the last six months range from streaming titles from celebrated filmmakers (like “Expats” on Prime Video from director Lulu Wang and co-starring Sarayu Blue alongside Nicole Kidman) and indie screen favorites to breakouts on cable that stunned and surprised us. And some streaming staples, like Hannah Einbinder’s spiky comedy writer in Max’s “Hacks,” outdid even their own performance from past seasons.

In 2018, Prime Video was the first streamer to land an Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and then repeated as winner in the top comedy category with Fleabag the following year. After cracking the Outstanding Drama Series field with a nomination for The Boys in 2021, Prime Video had a drama breakthrough this year with two series in the top category, Kilter Films’ Fallout, based on the Bethesda video games, and Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, inspired by the 2005 film, which landed 16 nominations each for a 32 total.
That accounted for the majority of Prime Video’s modest Emmy nomination haul of 37 this year, behind other major networks and streamers.

With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations.
But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.
Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.
Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti; The Gilded Age...

With fewer eligible series — a consequence of both last year’s strikes and of a general post-Peak TV contraction — it seemed unlikely that the Emmys (the second such ceremony this year!) would provide much in the way of surprises.
Perhaps, though, awards-watchers shouldn’t have counted them out.
Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement featured at least one major contender (Emma Stone in “The Curse”) shut out, and included heartening and unexpected recognition for other stars whose names hadn’t been part of the conversation to this point. (Congratulations to Idris Elba and Matt Berry!)
In all, the Emmy nominations depict an industry in rapid transition — relatively few returning series made the cut. But nowhere was the competition more pitched, and the volume of surprise omissions as high, as in the limited series field. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

It’s hard to overstate the comforting power of a TV episode. Whether you’re in the midst of a comedy, drama, limited series, reality show, or anything else, there’s no feeling like coming home from a long day to escapist sanctuary of “just one episode.” Sometimes they’re a breezy 21 minutes to 30 minutes, an opportunity to sneak in another because they just fly by. Others provide the regimented 40-60 minute hour, while the streaming economy has made way for feature-length installments that somehow still feel like just one chapter in a bigger story. Even disappointing shows have their exceptional outings, while those that are consistently excellent may fail to dazzle more or less from one part to the next. As IndieWire compiles our best of 2024 (so far), the staff faces our annual conundrum of weighing good episodes against good shows and seeing where the two overlap. For example,...

This year isn’t likely to be remembered for its television. Sure, TV will play its part in setting the historical record, but in an election year that’s also an Olympics year that’s also the second year in which Ben Affleck lost J. Lo (supposedly!), television will be critical in how we process 2024’s big events more than it will be remembered for producing its own entertainment and/or artistry.
But boy, is it putting up a fight. The first half of 2024 is replete with admirable, ambitious, and downright astounding series. Lulu Wang’s “Expats” and Issa Lopez’s “True Detective: Night Country” kicked off the year with a staggering one-two combination. “Shōgun” was right on their heels, along with the surprise sensation “Baby Reindeer” and the long-anticipated “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
As Emmy season approached, the hits just kept on coming: Comedy lovers got “Hacks,” “Girls5Eva,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Exclusive: Veteran CAA television agent Ted Miller is leaving to start a global management business. He just shared the news with his colleagues. Details about his new company will be unveiled at a later date.
The exit ends a 35-year agenting career at CAA for Miller, who started in the mailroom in 1988 before becoming an assistant to agency co-founder Michael Ovitz and getting promoted to agent in 1989.
For decades, there had been a handful of TV lit-driven management companies. Over the last several years, their number more than doubled as a slew of top TV agents launched new management firms. Miller is one of the biggest names yet to make the switch.
During his tenure at CAA, he has represented top TV showrunners, producers and directors and has held a string of TV leadership positions, most recently as Head of Global Television. He also was instrumental in putting together such series as Black Mirror,...

Barry Jenkins’ 10-episode limited series “The Underground Railroad” is a modern masterpiece. Many said as much when it first debuted, back in May 2021, and many more have discovered its incomparable beauty, power, and grace in the years since. On June 25, The Criterion Collection will recognize the series by releasing a four-disc Blu-ray set — marking its physical media debut — complete with audio commentary by Jenkins, his companion film “The Gaze,” deleted scenes, making-of featurettes, a graphic novel adaptation of an unfilmed episode, and more.
Being featured in a collection as prestigious as Criterion’s — which Jenkins himself compared to the Library of Congress, saying, “This is where films go to live forever” — will undoubtedly introduce “The Underground Railroad” to even more viewers. It deserves them, just as it deserves to join the exclusive collection featuring heralded titles (with ties to TV) like “Dekalog,” “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me,” and “Small Axe.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the limited field, where the lead categories went down to five slots.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! As Emmy voting continues, what better time than now to look again at the limited series race? This one got a lot more interesting once “Shōgun” exited the premises, and then again last week when it was revealed there would only be five nominees in the lead actor and actress races due to a shortage of submissions. We updated our Emmy predictions this week — I apologize again to those angered Selenators, many of whom directed their ire toward my Twitter mentions after I dropped her from my picks — and differed on where the Best Limited/TV Movie Actress contest might land. Like most,...

TV and film actor Brian Tee has signed with Verve and Authentic Talent & Literary Management for representation.
Tee recently starred alongside Nicole Kidman in the limited series “Expats,” directed by Lulu Wang for Prime Video. Up next, he will appear in Season 3 of Prime Video’s action series “Reacher” alongside star Alan Ritchson.
Widely known for his role as Dr. Ethan Choi for eight seasons in NBC’s popular Dick Wolf medical drama “Chicago Med,” Brian recently returned to the series to direct an episode for its current season.
“It was not necessarily an easy yes,” he told Variety in 2023 about returning to helm an episode. “I’m sure there’s a bit of a hesitation. But I think everyone has known that I’ve been wanting to do this. It wasn’t just something new, out of the blue. It’s been something I’ve been working toward.

Lulu Wang did something truly breathtaking with her limited series adaptation of Janice Y.K. Lee‘s “The Expatriates.” In the resulting show, retitled “Expats,” she made a literary adaptation that’s truly literate, with its characters given space to breathe onscreen — and live in your head — the way they do on the page. “My novel was simply the jumping off point for Lulu’s expansive vision,” Lee told IndieWire, with one of the greatest achievements of “Expats” being the fifth, and feature-length episode, “Central,” which reframes the story being told to that point in the direction of the Filipina guest workers involved in the lives of the characters played by Nicole Kidman and Sarayu Blue.
The series, a work that took the promise of Wang’s breakout 2019 Sundance hit “The Farewell” and delivered something ever more expansive, earned the director the Crossover Award at the Spring 2024 IndieWire Honors event. At the ceremony,...

Wherever I go, when I tell people that I work as an editor for Gold Derby, they never fail to bring up their latest binge-fest and how obsessed they were with it. “Ripley” occupied that space for several weeks, replaced by “Baby Reindeer,” then “Fellow Travelers.” Before that, I ran into a bunch of “Lessons in Chemistry” fans, and friends who were absolutely obsessed with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” “Fargo: Season 5” and “True Detective: Night Country” also had, and continue to have, legions of followers. And of course, “Shogun” consumed people for a good long while.
The point is that Best Limited Series has grown the past few years into the hottest and most prestigious Emmy category, and that’s especially true in 2024 with the depletion of the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series due to the 2023 strikes and the departure of shows like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso.
