The taxi uses wood gasification as a fuel source. This was a widespread practice during WWII when petrol was scarce. The hissing drum at the back of the taxi is the gasifier unit.
After the film's release the producer announced that the film would be edited due to complaints from descendants of a pilot who was seen in the film firing at civilians.
