Consider the career of one Joseph McGinty Nichol, better known by the nom de plume McG. This is a man whose directorial debut as a feature filmmaker in 2000 was the paradigm-shifting, zeitgeist-grabbing, new millennium bar-setter "Charlie's Angels." Sit with that for a moment. His next film? The extraordinary sequel "Full Throttle." Mind you these were gigs that star and producer Drew Barrymore personally sought out McG for based on the music videos he made for the band Sugar Ray. One of the more significant sliding doors moments in modern American history is the fact that McG was the original frontman for the band that would become Sugar Ray, before humbly realizing his talents lay elsewhere and convincing high school buddy Mark McGrath to take over.
McG helped launch and executive produce both "The Oc" and "Supernatural," he produced "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll" and "Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious,...

After a 13-year gap between films, the prequel to Jaume Collet-Serra's hit 2009 killer kid(?) movie "Orphan" debuted on Paramount+ alongside a limited theatrical release this weekend, with "Orphan: First Kill" proving audiences can't get enough of Esther. William Brent Bell of "The Boy," "Stay Alive," and "Separation" fame is in the director's chair this time around, with "Orphan" star Isabelle Fuhrman returning to play the titular role, despite the fact she's now well into her 20s. Even with the day-and-date release, "Orphan: First Kill" managed to bring home 1.6 million in its opening weekend, while playing in only 498 theaters across the country.
For comparison, the Idris Elba starring "Beast" opened in 3,743 theaters. Our friends over at Bloody-Digusting put together some quick math, which shows that "Orphan: First Kill" averaged 3,363 per theater, while "Beast" pulled in 3,091 per theater on average. “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount/$19.99) is best overall among VOD rankings this week, but it’s not unanimous. After initially leading after its July 13 iTunes release (always the quickest daily chart to reflect new releases), it dropped to #2. Instead, “Wrath of Man” (United Artists/$5.99) returned to the top, a position it already held for most of June. iTunes, like GooglePlay, ranks by number of transactions; after weeks at $19.99, “Wrath” reduced its price and rebounded.
John Krasinski’s smash sequel also was available on Paramount+. Did that have an impact? Only Paramount knows. Another point of interest: In its VOD debut, $19.99 meant a digital purchase of “Quiet” — not just a 48-hour rental. Electronic sell-throughs usually happen only after a rental-only option.
Apart from its iTunes #1, “Wrath” otherwise scored three second placements on other charts, highlighting consistency between those ranking by sales and transactions. “Nobody” (Universal/$5.99) and “Godzilla vs. Kong” (Warner Bros.

So far, we know that the post-pandemic theatrical audiences likes testosterone action movies and animated family films. This weekend, Guy Ritchie’s “Wrath of Man” became the latest R-rated action-based film to see credible results with $8.1 million against little in the way of competition. Only in a year like this one would it reach theaters in early May, traditionally the starting gun for summer-movie blockbusters.
While that’s not a breakout hit, what’s encouraging is it surpassed the $6.8 million that “Nobody” grossed six weeks ago. That genre peer grossed about $25 million to date, and now thrives on Premium VOD. The gross improvement testifies to the increase in open theaters and shows that films with core appeal can reach their audience. In turn, this encourages distributors that it’s safe to return. Regal added around 200 more sites this weekend, with many more planned for May 28 when “A Quiet Place Part II” debuts.

Sunday Am Update: By the calendar’s measure of recent box office years, it is the first weekend of summer. But because movie theaters are still closed in most of Europe and Brazil because of the pandemic, Disney decided to move Marvel’s Black Widow to July 9.
The good news is that we will finally have a semblance of a summer box office season, unlike last year, and United Artists Releasing is filling the vacancy left by Disney this weekend with the Miramax/MGM production of Guy Ritchie’s R-rated Jason Statham action title, Wrath of Man, which had a solid Friday at the B.O. during the pandemic with $3M (including $500K Thursday previews), then continued on to make the same amount of cash yesterday, and will see a 3-day opening of $8M at 2,875 theaters.

Exclusive: Batman Begins and Thank You for Smoking actress Katie Holmes has completed shooting on her second feature directorial, untitled romance in Connecticut. This is the first news we’re hearing about the project.
Produced by Yale Productions, the movie stars Holmes, Jim Sturgess, Derek Luke, Melissa Leo, Zosia Mamet, Luke Kirby, and Becky Ann Baker.
In the pic, two strangers embroiled in bad relationships wind up in the same upstate New York Airbnb. They’re forced to confront quarantine and their disdain for one another in this unexpected and unlikely love story. Holmes wrote and produced alongside Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman of Yale Productions.
“As soon as we read this script, and heard Katie’s vision, we knew this was a project we had to be a part of. Katie is just as talented a writer/director as she is an actress,” said Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman.

Divorce of Force: Bell Peddles Puppets in Congested Ghost Story
“Separate’s always better when there’s feelings involved,” per Outkast’s 2003 track Hey Ya!, and one wonders if William Brent Bell’s blandly titled Separation couldn’t have felt a bit more concise about these same sentiments.

At the end of the day, box-office success isn’t measured solely by opening-weekend numbers. Sometimes it’s a marathon, not a sprint. As proof, you need look no further than the newly reversed fortunes of Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.
Last weekend, the two new releases battled tooth-and-nail all the way to the finish line, with Mortal Kombat narrowly edging out Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. But now, just a week later, the two films have swapped positions in another box-office nail-biter. And this time, it was FUNimation Entertainment’s anime adventure Demon Slayer that came out on top by the narrowest of margins.
Already a bonafide blockbuster overseas, the R-rated Demon Slayer pulled in $6.4 million in its second weekend in North America. And despite nose-diving -69.7% from the previous frame, the film managed a $3,359 per-screen average in 1,905 theaters. More impressive is how the film has performed abroad,...

This weekend saw the debut of two appealing studio titles, neither of which will be in theaters. “Without Remorse,” Paramount’s relaunch of their Tom Clancy franchise and “The Mitchells vs the Machines,” from Sony Animation, launched on Amazon Prime and Netflix, respectively, free to subscribers. On the Netflix chart, “Mitchells” immediately placed at #1.
The cinemas could have used their momentum. Last weekend, “Mortal Kombat” and “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” surpassed expectations with openings over $20 million. This weekend, the only new release was horror film “Separation,” which earned $1.8 million. “Mortal” and “Demon.” each fell over 70 percent.
It isn’t unusual for big openers to drop half or more in their second weeks, but new competition opening is usually a contributing factor. It also appears that the titles’ audiences showed less crossover interest. Total business for the weekend will be around $24 million, about 60 percent less than last week.

After narrowly losing first place in its opening weekend, “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” has surged ahead of “Mortal Kombat” on U.S. box office charts.
The anime action adventure “Demon Slayer” is expected to end the weekend with $6.4 million in ticket sales, while “Mortal Kombat” trails closely behind with $6.2 million between Friday and Sunday. Both films debuted last weekend and dipped roughly 70% from their initial outings.
In normal times, those figures would have been somewhat disappointing for nationwide releases but during a pandemic, it’s not a terrible result. Still, it leaves lingering questions about when moviegoing will return in earnest — and if upcoming potential blockbusters like “A Quiet Place Part II,” Marvel’s “Black Widow” and “Fast and Furious” sequel “F9” will premiere as expected this summer.

Both films are estimated to earn around $6 million in their second weekend
It’s round 2 between Warner Bros./New Line’s “Mortal Kombat” and Funimation’s “Demon Slayer,” and this time, “Demon Slayer” may actually come out as the victor.
After an opening weekend where the anime film came surprisingly close to topping “Mortal Kombat” for the No. 1 spot, industry estimates have “Demon Slayer” just edging out the video game adaptation with $6.4 million from 1,915 theaters in its second weekend compared to $6.2 million from 3,113 theaters for “Kombat.” With such close margins, it will come down to final totals on Monday to determine who ends up on top on the charts.
Regardless, both films are showing the kind of frontloaded box office performance analysts were expecting with drop-offs of over 70% from their opening weekends. With R ratings and very specific lore that can shut out most casual audiences, both “Kombat” and “Slayer...

Arriving on the heels of his “The Boy” and “Brahms: The Boy II,” William Brent Bell’s “Separation” reconfirms the director’s belief that nothing is scarier than creepy killer dolls. A muddled execution undercuts laudable ambitions in the latest effort from director William Brent Bell, who previously demonstrated his talent for turning low-budget horror films into major commercial hits with such movies as The Devil Inside and The Boy. The filmmaker mines deeper emotional terrain than usual with Separation, which attempts to inject scares into a Kramer vs. Kramer-inspired scenario. But the film squanders its intriguing set-up and terrific performances by devolving into familiar genre tropes. Not that it will prevent horror-starved audiences from flocking to see it on the big screen thanks to the further lifting of pandemic restrictions.

Set to arrive in theaters this Friday is Separation, the supernaturally infused horror drama directed by William Brent Bell. There was a time when Clarke Griffin and Bellamy Blake were the leaders that defined The 100.
Their legacy as individuals made the show stand out, and their connection to one another allowed the world of The 100 to thrive.
Clarke Griffin stole our hearts as the lead that transcended the space she was in, with her strength, hope, and determination paving the way for something very rare. The fact that she was also the first bisexual female lead on a network TV show was just another reason she was so incredible.
Bellamy Blake became an extraordinary male lead through his development, his emotionally charged journey, and the way that he is still the heart of The 100. Bob Morley redefined the role, and he represents one of very few half Filipino male leads on our TV screens.

Coming to the channel next month are retrospectives dedicated to the stellar early films of Atom Egoyan, works by Miranda July, films featuring Ryuichi Sakamoto scores, Olympic films (including their recent release Tokyo Olympiad), plus Kelly Reichardt’s masterful Certain Women, Med Hondo’s Soleil Ô (coming soon to disc with Scorsese’s next World Cinema Project release), Lizzie Borden’s Born in Flames, Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation, and much more.
