4K is about to get a lot darker – no, not literally, don’t worry about that. Arrow Video has announced their November slate of 4K releases and a number of worthwhile entries that fit the horror and thriller bill, including Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, 2007’s The Invasion and Sam Raimi’s A Simple Plan.
Each of these entries – in addition to 1986’s At Close Range and manga adaptation Tomie – are getting upgrades this fall courtesy of Arrow, who has made a name for themselves as one of the premiere outlets for such presentations. Let’s take a look at some specs:

If one had to guess which filmmaker a film journalist could catch themselves conducting an interview with at two in the morning, at a table inside a hotel bar overlooking the Venice canal, Harmony Korine would probably be the most likely choice.
Coming off the world premiere of his new project “Baby Invasion” at the Venice Film Festival, the innovative, enfant terrible filmmaker is still struck by the heat inside the Sala Grande (“it was like a sauna”), but he’s also been processing the joy it felt to receive one of those signature applauses that lasts so long, security had to shut it down — especially for a film like this.
“I never seen anything like that in a place like that,” said Korine, back at the festival one year after premiering “Aggro Dr1ft” there, the first film produced under his new Edglrd banner. An 80-minute film inspired by first-person shooter games,...

Iconoclastic auteur Harmony Korine delivers another tripped-out feat of movie gamer madness with Baby Invasion, which follows last year’s Aggro DR1FT down a similar rabbit hole (one that includes lots of digital rabbits this time) in which violence, mayhem, masks and McMansions come clashing together in the Florida sun.
Whereas DR1FT was a freewheeling assassin flick whose images were processed and reprocessed until they looked like drug-addled nightmares, Invasion applies a different aesthetic but a comparable narrative approach, breaking the barriers between cinema and video games until we no longer know if we’re watching one or the other. And just in case you didn’t get that, onscreen titles come up at some point saying: “This is not a movie. This is a game. This is real life. There is no real life.” All clear now?

One of the best ongoing Marvel comic books of 2024 will soon have a new chapter. The comic in question? "Ultimates" as written by Deniz Camp, which will release its fourth issue on Wednesday, September 4. Marvel has shared an exclusive preview of the first four pages with /Film.
The book is the fifth series in the so-called "Ultimate" universe. In 2000, Marvel rebooted its characters for the new millennium, running the "Ultimate" Spider-Man, X-Men, etc. alongside the classic versions. In 2023, it brought back the retired "Ultimate" branding for a similar publishing initiative — a reboot of a reboot. (I promise that you don't need all this background memorized to enjoy the new Ultimate Marvel.)
"Ultimates" is a direct sequel to kick-off mini-series "Ultimate Invasion" by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch. In "Invasion," the Maker (an evil Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic from the original "Ultimate" universe) creates a new world and rewrites history to...

The MCU is home to innumerable characters, from superheroes to other, more ordinary individuals without any superpowers. A significant part of its grand appeal, thus, lies in the wide variety of these fascinating characters beyond just heroes and villains. Even the most ‘human’ and ‘normal’ figures in the MCU have their own unique charm, with one such character being Cobie Smulders’ Agent Maria Hill.

A fan-favorite character, the Avengers: Infinity War star sadly said goodbye to the character in MCU’s Secret Invasion series. Since we know nobody really stays dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Smulders recently revealed she would love to come back even though she knows nothing about Kevin Feige’s grand plan for the MCU.

Apple TV+, which has built out a sizable lineup of sci-fi series, is doubling down on one of those shows.
The streamer has renewed Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, for a second season. The pickup comes not quite two months after the show’s nine-episode first season concluded in late June.
Dark Matter, from Sony Pictures TV, is based on a best-selling novel by Blake Crouch, who also serves as showrunner on the series. Edgerton stars as Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor and family man who, while walking home in Chicago, is abducted into an alternate version of his life and has to piece together how to get back — and who’s trying to prevent him from doing so. Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley also star.

In 2019, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail announced that he was working on a reboot of Battlestar Galactica, the sci-fi series from the late 1970s about humanity struggling to survive after losing a brutal war with robots. Or maybe he was rebooting the early 2000s reboot of Battlestar Galactica, which revamped the story for modern audiences. Is it time to give the series yet another facelift, perhaps for the age of giant, big-budget genre series like Game of Thrones and Foundation?
Apparently not, because Variety reports that Peacock has turned down the chance to go forward with the rebooted reboot, which is now being shopped around to other studios. Might I suggest they hit up Apple TV+? Between Foundation, Silo, Severance, For All Mankind, Invasion and Time Bandits, they have an apparently bottomless appetite for all things sci-fi. Tite Kubo, the renowned creator of the hit manga series Bleach, has always been known for his intricate storytelling and distinctive art style. His work has brought to life a rich universe of Soul Reapers, Hollows, and spiritual warfare. While Kubo’s manga has been the primary source of the Bleach narrative, the anime adaptation has often taken creative liberties, introducing original arcs to expand the story beyond the manga’s boundary.

When it comes to Batman’s gallery of rogues, Pamela Isley a.k.a. Poison Ivy remains one of the more bizarre and maniacal. This beautiful botanist turned mad eco-terrorist is now best known for being Harley Quinn’s greener half, yet Poison Ivy proved to be a worthy foe all on her own. Batman: The Animated Series alone well illustrated her twisted sense of environmentalism. And in the few instances where Ivy was shown working in a solo capacity, she had a habit of shocking and disgusting the Caped Crusader with her exploits.
Over the course of The Animated Series (later retitled The Adventures of Batman & Robin), Poison Ivy had only three individual outings — four if we count her pumpkin plot in “Almost Got ‘Im”. Her debut, “Pretty Poison”, established her cracked moral compass and utter disregard for humans. After the more intimate crime of poisoning Harvey Dent,...

Netflix documentary Dirty Pop is the latest to use AI to generate footage that didn’t previously exist. Ryan ponders a strange, hallucinatory new world of filmmaking.
If you’ve been wondering what filmmaker Bennett Miller’s been up to in the decade since he put out his last movie, Foxcatcher, then the 30th July delivered the answer: he’s been busy delving into the fast-moving and often weird world of artificial intelligence.
Miller has, he revealed, been working on a feature film on the subject, as well as an exhibition of images generated using Dall·E, and also a documentary about AI which appears to be on hold due to legal issues of some sort.
Miller is far from the only filmmaker fascinated by AI, with its usage is gradually creeping into the industry much as it is elsewhere. In fictional storytelling, we’ve seen generative AI used to...

Stallone. Schwarzenegger. Jcvd. Seagal. Snipes. Gibson. These were the legends of eighties and nineties action cinema, but let me tell you something, folks, back in the 80s, there was one guy who was just as big as any of them, and his name was Chuck Norris. Nowadays, the martial arts champion’s movies don’t get quite as much play as those of the other guys I mentioned, probably because Norris never really made an A-level studio film, with him mostly toiling in elevated B-movies throughout the decade. But, some of them were really a lot of fun, as we’re going to dig into one of the most over-the-top and explosive ones of them all – Invasion U.S.A.
Cut back to the year 1984. After years of making lower-budget action films, Norris’s career started to hit its stride. In 1983, Lone Wolf McQuade brought him to the attention of Menahem Golan,...

Apple TV+ has been on a roll lately with its original sci-fi shows. Their newest series Sunny, starring Rashida Jones, is another hit that’s got people talking.
Sunny tells the story of a widow living in Japan who gets a robot companion. It mixes humor with heavy themes about loss and artificial intelligence. Critics love how Jones plays her character – understated but really captures her grief.
Audience reviews have been overwhelmingly positive too, with Sunny scoring 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. That makes it Apple TV+’s highest rated sci-fi show of the year. Their other 2024 sci-fi releases like Sugar and Dark Matter also did well.
Not everyone is fully sold on the robot sidekick though. Some feel it’s a bit too cartoony for the realistic world. But most agree the story and production quality are top-notch.

Marvel Cinematic Universe movies have caught a lot of flack in recent years for the sheer amount of silliness and gags muddling up the various film and TV plots. There's no doubt there are a lot of MCU jokes that haven't aged well, and as the franchise has continued, the quips seem to have become more and more frequent — something that will no doubt reach a fever pitch with the upcoming "Deadpool & Wolverine."
But there was a time when one-liners and wisecracks were used more sparingly and played a crucial role in the success of the MCU. This element of the franchise led directly to the hit that was "Thor: Ragnarok," in which Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige entrusted director Taika Waititi with reinventing Chris Hemsworth's Thor as a more comedic persona. This was due to the Aussie star's penchant for improv, which he'd demonstrated in both "Thor" and its sequel,...

To me, my vinyl collectors! The music of X-Men ’97 is coming to physical media, with the Newton Brothers’ score arriving as part of a two-record set.
The Hollywood Reporter has the first look and details of the package, which features art from Phantom City Creative and contains two, 140-gram color vinyl discs housed in a gatefold jacket.
X-Men ’97 was a continuation of the classic X-Men animated series, which ran from 1992-97. It was a critical hit for Marvel Studios, becoming its first project to score a 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The score form the Newton Brothers, known for collaborations with Doctor Sleep filmmaker Mike Flanagan, took inspiration from the show, and charted its own path as well.

Amidst several releases this month, The Strangers: Chapter 1 certainly emerged as an unexpected contender. It is, in fact, one of the films people expected to shine the least, and yet the opposite is true. Despite initial skepticism, the film’s robust opening day performance signifies a promising start, capturing audience attention and defying expectations.
Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez in The Strangers: Chapter 1 | Lionsgate Movies
While dealing with a lot of criticism and mixed reviews, it now seems that it is steering steadily forward on a path of potential success. The film’s surprising success has undoubtedly left some fans shocked, especially considering its competition in the race for the box office, which includes John Krasinski’s brainchild, If, and the already-running Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and the Ryan Gosling starrer, The Fall Guys.

While Chuck Norris started his career in action movies with 1977’s Good Guys Wear Black and Breaker, Breaker (a few years after playing Bruce Lee’s opponent in Way of the Dragon), one could argue that he only truly hit his stride in the mid-eighties. In fact, Norris’s best run of movies coincided with him signing a long-term deal with The Cannon Group, who produced many of his best-remembered films. Among his fans, one of the movies most often cited as one of his best is 1985’s Invasion U.S.A.

It's fair to say that, since 2016's Star Trek Beyond, the big and small screen incarnations of the venerable sci-fi franchise have certainly diverged in terms of output. While the films have been seemingly stuck in dry dock as different options are announced, only to fail to appear, the TV universe has exploded in all sorts of interesting directions. Part of the Paramount+ success appears to be having Alex Kurtzman as a producing/writing guiding light, and it seems that Paramount's studio division is aiming to have someone take over the film side in a similar capacity. That someone? Simon Kinberg.
The writer/director/producer, who has been behind a variety of successful projects including The Martian, Apple TV+'s Invasion and several X-Men movies, is now, according to Puck, in talks to join the Trek franchise to produce the film that appears to be closest to fruition: an origin...

Marvel Studios is on a streak. But not a good one at that. Things have not gone too well for the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since the release of its magnum opus, Avengers: Endgame. What fans have witnessed since then is a run of mediocre projects, with the odd bright spots here and there to keep fans interested in the franchise. And it seems like they are having a hard time snapping this run. An attempt in this direction will be the WandaVision spin-off miniseries focusing on the witch Agatha Harkness. But even the miniseries has had its fair share of troubles.

For those who remember, the game show Press Your Luck relied a lot on good timing. In a very roulette-like manner, contestants would watch squares on a board randomly be highlighted until they prompt it to stop in order to get the prize it halted on. An amazing episode in 1984 would have a contestant endlessly receiving good luck as he won big money every time he called, “Stop!” His fortune would be called into question as he would get accused of cheating on the show. Deadline has now shared the first look at Press Your Luck — a movie that will depict the events of that episode and all the controversy surrounding it, starring Paul Walter Hauser as the fateful contestant.
The synopsis, according to Deadline, reads,
“Set in 1984, the film follows Ohio resident Michael Larson, who steps on to the set of game show Press Your Luck harboring a secret:...

One of the biggest TV shows in the history of entertainment, Seinfeld is still as famous as ever. Created and starring Jerry Seinfeld as a fictional character, it was the series’ witty writing and impeccable comedic timing that made it as popular as it is now. No less than a phenomenon, the series eventually inspired a bunch of lingo and even a curse.
