Singaporean film director Eric Khoo has received numerous awards, including the Singapore Cultural Medallion and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government. Since 1995, he has played a key role in reviving Singapore’s film industry and gaining international recognition. His notable works have been screened at prestigious film festivals including Berlin, Venice, and Cannes.

On the occasion of his latest film “Spirit World” screening at Tokyo International Film Festival, we speak with him about the casting of the movie and particularly Catherine Deneuve and Masaaki Sakai, his family’s involvement in the movie, surf music in Japan, the Japanese style of the film and other topics

The cast in the movie is one of its most impressive assets. Can you tell me how it worked and particularly how you managed to have Catherine Deneuve and Masaaki Sakai in the movie?

To me, my vinyl collectors! The music of X-Men ’97 is coming to physical media, with the Newton Brothers’ score arriving as part of a two-record set.

The Hollywood Reporter has the first look and details of the package, which features art from Phantom City Creative and contains two, 140-gram color vinyl discs housed in a gatefold jacket.

X-Men ’97 was a continuation of the classic X-Men animated series, which ran from 1992-97. It was a critical hit for Marvel Studios, becoming its first project to score a 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The score form the Newton Brothers, known for collaborations with Doctor Sleep filmmaker Mike Flanagan, took inspiration from the show, and charted its own path as well.

Take your pick. There have been countless film and TV productions adapting Alexandre Dumas’ classic 19th century tale of revenge and deception, The Count of Monte Cristo. We have seen it in different versions in 1934, 1954, 1975, 2002 and probably up to 15 more iterations. Now we have the latest, the lavish widescreen French production Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, which had its world premiere Wednesday night Out of Competition to a wildly approving full audience at the Grand Lumiere — an appropriate place to launch this film as the screen might be the best in the world, and this movie is big.

In addition to all those past film versions on the book, there are countless other movies that have stolen from this complexly plotted tale. For some reason I kept thinking of the Ocean’s movies as, like this, they involve lots of complicated plotting, and once our title character begins planning his revenge...

Joe Carnahan’s Narc opens in a frenzy, as a narcotics detective, Nick Tellis (Jason Patric), chases a drug dealer through the streets of Detroit on foot. There are echoes here of the foot chase that unspools midway through Kathyrn Bigelow’s Point Break, with these men bashing forth in and out of houses, over fences, through playgrounds, their collision with endless variables driving up anxiety. Narc’s images aren’t as polished as that film’s, partially by necessity, partially by design, as Tellis’s improvisations to get his perp mirror those of Carnahan, who’s fashioning a high-voltage set piece on the fly, an upstart filmmaker balling on a budget. It’s a hell of an opening, establishing Narc’s tortured atmosphere and fractured aesthetic, with shaky, chilly images cut and reassembled (by editor John Gilroy) into shards that suggest policework to be a roaring inferno.

The UK Prime Minister has criticized “certain sections of the media” for treating Kate Middleton unfairly and sent well wishes following the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” snatched its highest rating in four years, TheWrap can reveal exclusively.

The second episode of Season 16, which premiered on Friday, Jan. 12, scored a 0.91 rating among adults 18-34 on MTV, the highest the show has seen since the Season 12 finale on VH1 on May 29, 2020, according to Nielsen live-plus-three-day figures. Viewership for the episode soared 18% from the 0.78 rating brought in by the Season 16 premiere on Jan. 5.

The Jan. 12 episode also scored the show’s highest share ever — or the percentage of viewers tuning in during primetime — among young adults with a 10.11 share among adults 18-34. The share was up 29% when compared to last week’s Season 16 premiere, which brought in a 7.81 share.

The episode marked the No. 1 most-watched entertainment telecast across cable for the week between Monday and Friday.

The "Halo" season 2 trailer has arrived, and it brings with it the return of Master Chief who is now facing a new, familiar threat to those who played the games: The Covenant. Indeed, this season will see the sword-wielding aliens wreaking havoc. It appears that the folks at Paramount+ spared no expense in crafting the second season of this show, but will that be enough to turn it into the series everyone hoped it would be in the first place?

This trailer is very moody and overflowing with gloomy action. It's got a "Starship Troopers" vibe to it at times, just without all of the vibrant color and blatant political commentary. We're also, once again, seeing Master Chief without his helmet off an awful lot. Love it or hate it, that element of the show remains in place. It's very cinematic and a lot of the visual effects look big-screen worthy.

In the latest TV show ratings, CBS’ Big Brother: Reindeer Games closed out its run with a season-high audience of 2.25 million total viewers, while steady in the demo with a 0.3. demo rating; read recap.

Leading out of that, the Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic birthday special was attended by 2.973 million viewers — Thursday night’s largest audience — while scoring a 0.2 demo rating.

Alkaline Trio have announced their first studio album in six years, Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, out January 26th, 2024 via Rise Records. Along with the announcement, they also unveiled plans for a 2024 tour (get tickets here) and shared the lead single, “Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs.”

The follow-up to 2018’s Is This Thing Cursed? was recorded by the band at a number of studio sessions with producer Cameron Webb, and takes its title from stories that vocalist Matt Skiba remembers from his childhood. “My mom worked for years as an emergency room nurse,” he said in a press statement. “She and her co-workers referred to exceptionally busy nights as ‘blood, hair, and eyeballs.’ Well, we’ve been busy making an exceptional record we refer to as Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, too.”
