In 2018, “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul missed out on breaking the record for fastest Egot acquisition by coming up short on their first Emmy bid for “A Christmas Story Live!”. From that point, however, they still had eight years left to achieve said record, and they could end up doing so with two years to spare now that they are in the running for the 2024 Best Music and Lyrics Emmy.
Pasek and Paul’s new nominated song from “Only Murders in the Building” is one of three comedic ones in its lineup, the others of which were written for “Girls5eva” and “Saturday Night Live.” Also in the mix are more somber tunes from the miniseries “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “True Detective: Night Country.”

Some of the most breathtaking moments of the “Planet Earth” series take place in Hang son Doong Cave in Vietnam. But capturing and showcasing the natural beauty of the largest cave in the world provided some challenges on how the crew were going to light it.
The Emmy-nominated “Extremes” episode of “Planet Earth III” trekked to Vietnam and into a world of darkness, going approximately 700 feet underground for 17 days. Cinematographer Luke Nelson and his team required special cameras, lenses and a unique lighting set-up to highlight the beauty of this underground world which otherwise was a world of complete darkness.
Getting there was the first challenge. “It takes two days of walking,” said Nelson in Variety’s Artisans, presented by HBO. “We had to hire 10-15 porters to help us carry everything from batteries, generators, drones and lenses.”

The BBC will lay off 500 more staff members by March 2026 in a bid to become a “leaner, more agile organization” as its annual report tells a tale of financial difficulty for the U.K. broadcaster.
The service’s license fee, the annual TV tax that Britons pay, which accounts for 65 percent of the BBC’s total budget, generated 30 percent more income in 2010/11 than it does today, a difference of over £1 billion a year. In a bid to make further savings and under significant funding pressure, 500 public service roles are to be cut.
The BBC’s headcount is down by 10 percent in the past five years, a reduction of almost 2,000 roles, and a voluntary redundancy scheme has launched today. “Over the course of the next two years, we will look to further move the money we have into the priority areas that provide real value for audiences,” the BBC said. “This means,...

A total of 36 individuals earned their first Primetime Emmy acting nominations in 2024, including “Feud” stars Naomi Watts and Tom Hollander and recent Oscar also-rans Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Ryan Gosling (“Saturday Night Live”). A standout among these newbies is Paul Rudd, who is the only one in the group with shots at two performance wins: Best Comedy Supporting Actor (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Best Narrator (“Secrets of the Octopus”).
Rudd could now make Emmys history as the eighth doubly-nominated first-timer to triumph on at least one of his bids. The first to do so was Robert Cummings, who simultaneously won for “12 Angry Men” and lost for “My Hero” in 1955. Ralph Lee, BBC Studios Productions’ CEO, will be leaving the BBC’s commercial arm in April after almost six years to pursue a new challenge outside the organization.
Since being appointed director of content in 2018, “Lee has guided BBC Studios Productions to unrivaled creative recognition – winning 111 awards and 400 nominations in the ’22/’23 financial year alone – and becoming the most awarded production group at the BAFTA and Rts Awards,” BBC Studios said on Thursday.

Every time I see Dick Van Dyke’s name in a headline lately, I fear the worst. But this week it meant a joyous celebration. In CBS’ new two-hour special “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic,” the legendary actor — who throughout his career has won multiple Emmys, a Tony and a Grammy Award — was honored on his 98th birthday for his many contributions to the arts.
The tribute, which is now streaming on Paramount+, features special performances by Jason Alexander, Rufus Wainwright, Weird Al Yankovic, Rita Ora and Amber Riley, among others. Meanwhile, the guest list is just as long and just as impressive as Van Dyke’s career. Dame Julie Andrews, Mel Brooks, Rob Reiner, Carol Burnett, Ted Danson, Stanley Tucci and Lin-Manuel Miranda are just a few of the celebs who appear during the star-studded event. And to top it all off, there’s a holiday number too.

Ahead of Ward’s trip to Mipcom, she sat down with Variety to discuss the changes she’s implemented over the past year and what she’s looking forward to spotlighting in Cannes.
How would you describe your remit as head of BBC Studios’ factual portfolio?
I’m in the really, really lucky position that BBC Studios Factual is one of the pillars of our production business. We are working across an incredible range from natural history, specialist factual, docs, popular factual and formats, so we’re really reaching across the whole of that factual genre.
