Calendar Girls (2003)
Beautiful
I am not a big fan of what most people would call chick flicks, but I enjoyed this movie very much. For one, it's so nice to see a movie filled with actors chosen for their great acting skills, not their youthful good looks. Although neither of the main actresses in this film are very well known in the US, they are incredible. Helen Mirren is especially good.
Additionally, the film work in this is wonderful. The director has a knack for finding the most beautiful places in England, and using them as a reflection of the story. This is a great comedy, especially for people who like to see great actors having a lot of fun on screen.
Peter Pan (2003)
Brilliant!
I must say I was surprised at how good this movie actually was. I was looking forward to it because I am a fan of Jason Isaacs, who plays Hook. The reviews I read, however, didn't seem overly happy with the movie. The reviews were just stupid. Like with Pirates of the Caribbean, the reviewers seemed to have missed the greatness of this movie. Every person in the movie is genius. Pan, who has been frowned upon for being American, was absolutely perfect. Isaacs was as well. And Rachel was perfect as Wendy. I am rarely drawn into young girl characters, but her performance was perfect. Not to mention a great Tinkerbell, which certainly wasn't the case in Hook. On top of all of this, the costuming and the dialogue were beautiful, as well as faithful to the story. The movie really managed to capture some of the bizarreness of the people in the story. Additionally, Hook had some extremely clever dialogue. This movie is great for people of all ages. Finally, a Peter Pan that is as good as if not better than what JM Barrie created!
The Parlor (2001)
So cool
I love short films, but but this was more than I expected. It was simply cool beyond words. And the twisted ending was brilliant. Overall, more than worth spending the ten minutes or so to watch it. Its sort of weird trying to figure out what's going on, and once you do it is just hilarious. I enjoyed the mind games.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
Great Movie!
Alan Rickman and Jason Isaacs make this movie brilliant. I watch Harry Potter for the adults in it. Maggie Smith is also phenomenal. Kenneth Branaugh, whom I cannot stand, is great here. I love so many of the actors in this movie. The Phelps twins, Rupert Grint, Sean Biggerstaff etc. all do great jobs. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have gotten much better than they were in the first movie.
Aside from the acting, the sets are beautiful, the dialogue witty, and the pacing fast and exciting. All in all, this one is much better than the first. See it!
Big Trouble (2002)
Great movie, very funny
I am so surprised this wasn't more popular. It seemed Sept. 11 ruined its chances. I was enthralled. This movie is consistently funny and silly and satirical all at once. It's a brilliant Dave Barry adaptation. All I could think the entire time was, Dave Barry is a movie. Patrick Warbuton was ingenious, as was the rest of the cast. I highly recommend this to anyone with a sense of humor.
Hjælp! Jeg er en fisk (2000)
Yay!
This is a fun kids movie with beautiful animation! Some of the Disney movies could learn a thing or two from the Norwegians. Alan Rickman and Terry Jones do brilliant voice work on this. The songs get a little tiresome, but overall the movie is unbearably cute.
Dark Harbor (1998)
The Worst Movie of All Time.
This is honestly the worst movie ever. It had no redeeming qualities, even Alan Rickman, whom I consider an acting God, couldn't make up for it. The film had no budget. Horrible makeup. Pulled on every trite and over-used setting available. So cheap, with nothing fun or campy to make it better. Ugh.
*SPOILER* And the ending. I don't even begin to understand. I watched it three times just to *try* to understand what was going on. It seemed liked it should end about seven separate times. You end up seeing Alan Rickman naked and then making out with another guy. Even this did not make up for the movie. I am embarrassed for everyone involved. Does Alan Rickman *read* the scripts before he signs on the movies???
