Good Times (2024)
It's not THAT bad!
No, it is not the original 'Good Times', and obviously it is not suppose to be. But, it has great humor & the look is vintage (e.g. Fat Albert Show). I laughed out loud a few times and the characters featured (Elon Musk, Maya Angelou) added to the funny. And for those making a big deal about a baby drug dealer, this is not a new concept of the adult situation baby in the Seth MacFarlane universe (see Family Guy). So, I doubt race (ism) has anything to do with it. This also reminds me of The PJ's of the early 2000's. Some people on their high horse about a series that is not to be taken that seriously. The original 'Good Times' was a cultural phenomenon realized many years after it ended (along with other Norman Lear produced sitcoms). However, at the time it premiered, it's premise was not revered by many Black Americans who did not want to see "the struggle" on T. V., along with a little clown-nery.
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
Generation X Scream meet Generation Z Bodies Bodies Bodies!
This is the most Gen Z movie you can watch. If you ever wondered what it is to be Gen Z, watch this movie. And, this is coming from a Generation X person. I also enjoyed it, all the characters, and the twist. Another review stated this was the Scream of their generation; and it fits that comparison by not taking itself too seriously. If you are looking for true horror scare, this movie is not it. But it has sufficient suspense to keep you guessing. It also is just the right length and pacing. It does not drag out the story. The flaws and vulnerability of the characters is there and it gives nothing more. Watch to understand your kids!
Poker Face (2023)
Classic 70s TV Crime Capers
Thank you Rian Johnson for bringing back the 1970s quirky crime detective. Columbo, Rockford Files, Kojak, & Police Woman are just a few of the shows Poker Face takes inspiration from. Nowadays there are a lot of rehashing of the old into new form. Most should never have been attempted. And, I think Natasha Lyonne is perfect. The writing is creative & stories are imaginative, with a suspenseful back story. It has a gimmick of her having special abilities to find the truth but it comes off believable. It's not obvious to the plot & overdone at all. The cast in each episode are top actors and comedians, along with newer faces that hang right in there for talent. Loved seeing Natasha & her castmate from Orange is the New Black, Dascha Polanco back together in 1st episode. I am really looking forward to the remainder of the season.
Inside Man (2022)
It isn't bad but just not what you thought it would be!
I had a slow start to getting into this series. I love the actors and looked for it to be a suspenseful who-done-it. Buuuut...it was not exactly that! It takes about the third & fourth episodes to see where this seemingly nonsense is going. It's not really nonsense but you have to not overthink the story & keep an eye on the connections to all the characters. It is really a morality tell, with a touch of Shakespearean tragedy. You have to get pass your expectation of a popularized true crime series we have come to expect. Only thing I still wish there had been more character development to really care about the characters, but in the end there is room left to get that too with this series.
Keep Breathing (2022)
I Tried...but
I really tried to watch this. Appeared was going to be a good story; strangers meeting, unknown backstory, plane crash, wilderness, lone survivor, a bear. But NOPE! Flashbacks threw me off & I never could figure out the real reason the guys were flying out. Seems to just to go nowhere...pun intended. Netflix has got to work on its original content...getting worse! Seems they are taking any content offered & seeing what sticks to the wall! Most are not.
Beauty (2022)
I Get It!
This wasn't a biopic in the traditional sense of such stories. If you are looking at it from that genre, you will be very disappointed. I think the writer and production were trying to focus on the story of a talent going into the entertainment business and the changes for her, her family, and friends. Yes, it is very familiar to a life story we know well, but it is not about the talent, the voice, or the legend. We already know that part well. But what about the struggles that person faces with impending notoriety (i.e. R&b v. Pop star, traditional "good" church girl v. Alternative lifestyle, well-spoken v. Urban). The acting was good with what the actors had to work with. Photography was excellent. However, the plot and characters needed to be fill out more. And, the pacing was off in the build up to the end of one era for the singer and moving on to the next. I loved the interspersed video of singing legends, which more than made up for any musical accompaniment from the actors.
The Janes (2022)
Valuable Piece of History!!
No matter where you stand on abortion, this documentary is an essential watch. It lays bare, succinctly, the struggle and wherewithal these women (and men!)had to address the desperate situation many women found themselves in. The hypocrisy still lives even today ( catholic priest condemning abortions while probably molesting their alter boys). These women, even beyond race, class, or economic status, fought in solidarity to provide ( and give) an alternative. They also took back control of their bodies, literally and metaphorically. Watch it...learn...empathize!!
Barry: limonada (2022)
Outrageous...Hilarious
Henry Winkler has still got it!! The whole episode and acting is a master class. Without spoiling it: dogs, blue, choco lattes, bad dates, and flashlights.
Servant (2019)
This is Deep.
The best way to enjoy this series is to quickly understand it is a slow burn. A very slow burn. If you are expecting quick gratification, and a nice wrapped package with a bow. This may not be for you. Keep watching and the story will start clicking.
The Rental (2020)
It's OK for "Short A#@ Movie" Genre
Movie is OK. Starts well, good middle, but the end is flat. No likeable characters to make you care. And the murderer nor his reasons are not revealed. When it was over, all I cared about was what happened to Reggie the dog since every one was killed. Was he lefted at the house? Did the killer take him?
Forgive Us Our Trespasses (2022)
This is a short film?!
Soooo, when I started watching I thought this was a full length movie. When the credits rolled at 14 minutes I was like...wait a minute...LOL! I was just getting into it. Regardless, I was moved by this short and the poignant depiction of the fear, insanity, and brutality of Nazis. The beliefs and propaganda that eclipse so many, even the most vulnerable.
The Gilded Age (2022)
Very, very good so far!!
I generally enjoy any movie set in the the gilded age of NYC. Seeing where all the old money settled in the industrial age, and as a result the beautiful mansions that sprung up around Central Park. And how classism among the wealthy played out. I see why they did not have much inkling to put all their separatist energy into other races. So far, I'm am enjoying this HBO series. Just binged the first 5 episodes and I like how the story is not one dimensional. It concentrates on life, good or bad of several characters. Loving seeing Cynthia Nixon in a really different role from Sex in the City. Shows her acting chops!
Cruella (2021)
Really a great movie...costumes are outstanding!
The movie is better than I expected. Really gave a touching origin story of one of Disney's most villianous villians. The outfits, hair, and makeup are some of the best in the movies right now.
Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeywoman (2021)
Not what I expected
A "movie" that instead of leaning on a semi-factual premise, this dramedy is more of a comedic satire with a splash of Lifetime movie acting & Tyler Perry soap opera.
Women of the Movement (2022)
Powerful.
A lynching I have known of all my life but this narrative just brings a fresh perspective to a new generation. The horror experienced and the strength an older generation had to endure to just survive.
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Very Good!! Give a chance.
I thought this series was very good. Right amount of drama, comedy, slap-stick, mystery, & cliffhangers. And in 30 minute episodes. Amospheric...old v. Futuristic! Can't wait for a season 2. Lots more to unpack with the crew of Spike, Jet, Faye, Vicious, & Julia.
Bayou Caviar (2018)
Not that bad!
Ran across movie on Hulu. Not the worst movie at all. Photography was great of New Orleans and had an overall meaningful story of exploitation, along with desire for celebrity at any cost. Slow start and build up but once you see where it is going, decent movie. Good first effort from director, Cuba Gooding, Jr.
Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami (2021)
Great Series
I enjoyed this series. Maybe because I knew little to nothing about the Sal and Willy's story but I thought series was fun, fast pace, and even account from all sides. Got a lot of participation from those connected to the "tale." I feel in love with Marilyn!! She a person that is in the craziness but you can't help but root for her and laugh with her. All said & done, everyone right where they should be!
The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990)
This Movie Aged Well
However you may feel about the plot, acting, actors, directing, screenplay v. Book, this movie is still relevant in 2021 (minus the little trinket called social media).
The Upshaws (2021)
IMDB Reviewers is a hard crowd!!
This is really a great show! Very funny and experienced actors/comedians at their best. Check it out!!
I'm Your Woman (2020)
Great movie!
No, not your typical gangster story. And, that's a good thing. Does the baby cry in the movie? Yes. That's what babies do. Welcome to motherhood when with a baby mixes with a stressful situation. For the movie, it makes you feel her anxiety even more. The casting is perfect and powerful. This movie should be an award winner!
Ava (2020)
Nice to see Geena Davis
Some of my favorite actors in this movie. But poor writing and stale story is too much for even the best. This is not "The Long Kiss Goodnight."
Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story (2020)
We Need Cyntoia to Tell her Story.
Hopefully, Cyntoia Brown-Long will do a doc to finish the story of her life, those that impacted it before she went to prison, and her life after prison. This doc does not do that; it tells again what we already know (which would be great for those who knew nothing about the circumstances). But this doc still only scratches the surface, and Cyntoia (along with other young women still in her similiar past circumstances before/after jail) deserves better. This doc, however, does motivate me to read Mrs. Brown-Long's book.
High Fidelity (2020)
Didn't Expect This...
I was not a fan of High Fidelity movie so did not think I would be into this series much. But pleasantly surprise! Got better with each episode. And Zoe Kravitz and Da'vine Joy are great!!
Selah and the Spades (2019)
Been done before but better!
The whole movie I felt like this familiar story has been done better in other movies and series. And just kind of unbelievable. Good acting but story needs more development.
