House of Darkness (2022)
Not Really Horror
Usually a Horror movie makes you feel tense or scared, a little paranoid.
The only reason I felt tense was being embarrassed for Justin Long's character. In his usual way, he rambles through the movie. His innocence and naiivite gave me a little hope he might be kept as a pet, but even I was glad it finally came to the end it did.
Satisfying way to stop the banter.
Typical "male resorts to violence and degrading name-calling when he doesn't get what he wants or expects from a female" but by then he proved he deserved it.
Even powerful women have to put up with threats to their body and insults to their femininity.
All in all: this movie made me wish for such superheroes as these ladies.
Broadcast (2022)
What??
Ok, maybe this isn't the movie to listen to with occasional glances at the screen. There were good concepts which piqued my interest: prolonging life, its side effects short- and long-term, the AI "toy" and this "spectator" the description alluded to. No action, so don't be disappointed. Music was minimal and basically omnipresent to make you feel tension? But I don't know what the tension was about...
You know how The Wizard of Oz uses Black & White or Color to differentiate where Dorothy is? Well, I didn't notice any helpful "cheat" like that.
So, I don't know what happened.
I don't know how these inventions affected the future/fate of humanity, & I'm still curious. Just not sure if I should watch the movie again when I can just sit and concentrate on it or give it up!
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Wanted to Point out a Goof
In the ery firs scene, the record is spinning counter-clockwise. I had been so long since I played one but that is incorrect .. I'm sure clockwise is normal.
However, not much in this film is normal and this is probably all part of it!
All goofs may be planned, like the meticulous wardrobe and hair. Love how the chosen colors set the moods. Still watching it. I was afraid I would be too Stepford Wives but reading other reviewers has piqued my interest. So far, looks great and well cast.
As a child of 19six0s I am reminded of my parents by the music, clothes drinking and smoking and carefree attitudes.
Shirley Valentine (1989)
Not A Romance
What I love about Shirley Valentine is how she bravely takes the opportunity to do something else with her life. I watch this movie when I want a reminder that my life is up to me, I can say Yes or No, I can make changes or accept the routine. Others have their own lives and their own right to be however they choose and that does not limit my choices!
Filled with many clever snippets about life, I often quote Shirley... I highly recommend this movie for everyone who feels stuck. Not a "chick flick," this movie is for anyone. If you aren't sure, watch it alone, let yourself cry and let yourself be inspired.
The opening song sets the stage beautifully:
The Girl Who Used To Be Me
What dreams, skills, talents, friends, aspirations have you forgotten in your own quest for adulthood?
Rufus (2012)
Unexpected Masterpiece
If you are looking for something unusual, this is a fabulous find! Although there is the tempting horrific pic on the "cover" promising blood, this movie is more about heart. I absolutely am THRILLED that this story is more than a 'monster' movie or thriller or horror, it is a mystery and a PROFOUND story of belonging. All the main characters are longing to belong, all of them are human and wrestling with their own secrets and hurts. This is an incredibly wonderful story of healing through accepting others, instead of isolating out of fear of vulnerability and more potential wounds. MASTERPIECE.
The Recall (2017)
Great start for sci-fi series
This movie advertises to be a teen movie with the promise of sci-fi or action. I'd say that is misleading. Yes, the wonderful Wesley Snipes is in it, unfortunately portrayed as a crazy mountain man/survivalist loner. When the aliens get there, it could have been handled better. As they begin abducting the teens, and subsequent scenes are really lower-budget style with lots of shadows. There are some beautiful effects and the last few minutes of the movie made me wonder if the rest of it was better than I thought. (Not really) the symbols/markings are very cool! The returned abductees are wonderful! And the human violence they encounter contrasted with the last few minutes of the film are full of promise and wonder! That is where the real story begins and, unfortunately, the movie ends.
The A List (2018)
What a Surprise!
I haven't finished the season yet, but this show is addictive! Surprising with every discovery.... is she a witch? is it a teen version of 'Lost' or some wonderful M Night Shyamalan/Stephen King/Dean Koontz story???? I can hardly wait to find out!
