Pathfinder (2007)
Viking B*****ds!
Awwww....I'm Norwegian and these Viking Ba****rds were a bunch of turds. Viking vs. Indians....the legend of how and why we avoided eating lefsa and lutefisk for the rest of our lives instead of hot dogs and pizza is told in a reasonably straight forward manner. I don't have much to add to the healthy dose of criticism and bile already heaped on this movie...because I kind of liked it. I don't rape and pillage (even though...like I mentioned earlier...I'm Norwegian) so I hope I wasn't getting some sick Norwegian vicarious thrill watching these Viking nut jobs wreak havoc on all the poor Natives..but this movie was kind of cool visually and had some pretty good action scenes. This is the kind of movie that when I tell my friends that I enjoyed it, they look at me like I was brain dead. I didn't rent it expecting Scorcese. It didn't let me down. But for visually appealing, cheesy entertainment it's pretty darn good. Lighten up.. or watch Citizen Kane again and eat some water crackers while you're doing it...sip some white wine, even.

Not good...but full of Magic
This wasn't really a very good movie. There were lots of implausible and predictable things that happened during the course of the film...but I think that most of the reviewers are missing the point of why this movie should be enjoyed by a wide audience. THIS MOVIE WAS PRODUCED BY MAGIC JOHNSON! Isn't that enough to inspire us all to check out this film? A film produced by a former NBA star doesn't come along every day, you know. Beautifully stupid kids in a big house getting slashed by an axe wielding psycho. Every cliché trotted out for us to groan over. Teen sex. And it was all produced by MAGIC JOHNSON! I can't say enough about this movie! Teen drug use! College hijinx! And it was all produced by MAGIC JOHNSON! Yippeeee!
Sourdough (1981)
buried treasure of a movie
This is one of my favorites...and I tend to see a lot of movies. That I recommend it so frequently has become something of a joke at my house...but to be "obsessed" with something as worthy as this movie is o.k., I suppose. This movie tells the story of an old trapper's search for an unspoiled area of Alaska that a friend had told him about years earlier. He's looking for a place that is untouched by man (in an area of the country that should be full of such places) and this is the story of that search.
It is beautifully filmed and contains imagery that I haven't seen duplicated in many other films--documentary or feature. By the time the movie is finished, the viewer really has had an opportunity to empathize with the character.
The film was made a while back, and as far as I know is out of print and was never available on DVD...and that's a shame. Somebody needs to figure out how to buy the rights to this and re-release it because it would be a shame for it to just fade away.
