Intruders (2011)
Well worth a trip to the cinema!
I'm not normally a fan of scary movies but the inclusion of Clive Owen convinced me to give this film a look and I wasn't disappointed. It's cleverly constructed & wastes no time setting up the creepy atmosphere which lasts throughout. To some extent the storyline was predictable however the interesting ending left me more than satisfied. Here's hoping they never make a sequel as it's perfect as a one off experience.
Try not to watch the trailer or read anything more than a brief summary and make your way to the cinema as soon as this one comes out as it's worthy of a cinema experience!
Brève traversée (2001)
Its kind of a Before Sunrise meets The Graduate.
I love this film! Brève traversée [Brief Crossing] was part of the Brisbane International Film Festival, I saw 23 films and this was by far my favourite! The story focused around a young (16) boy and a 30 something woman on a ferry. The two meet in the lunch line and for lack of anywhere else to sit, they sit together. A conversation starts up that lasts them hours and away we go. The film follows their discussions & then sexual relationship. Its kind of a Before Sunrise meets The Graduate. I just loved their discussions and the glances the two share - the 2 actors are sensational, they make the film work. One quote I recall (which I rather like) said by the woman 'Alice' talking about how pointless life can be: "The irony is in order to make a living you have to spend time!" ......5 stars!
The Hard Word (2002)
a bloody good time!
What a great aussie film! Good humour - our (pretty full) audience was loving it. Great performances by all involved. And some good music to set the whole crime mood. I liked this better than Two Hands - the cast and the jokes put it above.
The story basically follows 3 brothers Dale (guy Pearce), Shane (Joel Edgerton) and Mal (Damien Richardson) who are bank robbers. We find them in prison on the day they get released. A peroxide blonde Rachel Griffiths plays Carol, Dale's wife, who has been sleeping with the brothers lawyer Frank (Robert Taylor who one of the agents in The Matrix). And together they all plan to execute Australia's biggest heist!
Joel Edgerton (who was Uncle Owen in a 2 minute Star Wars 2 role) is exceptional, I love how he plays a bit of psycho! He was the standout for me - he had a much larger part than I had expected garnering more screen time than Rachel Griffiths. Guy and Rachel were terrific, Guy especially found that spark he had with Priscilla Queen Of The Desert. And I really enjoyed Damien Richardson, he gave Mal nice aussie bloke appeal. I liked the scene in the prison kitchen with Mal & Tony (Greg Fleet) - well all their scenes together were good actually, they were kind of quirky funny. Vince Colosimo (from Lantana fame) as usual is gorgeous and as I said before the whole cast were great!
It is extremely violent - I can see why its original title was Blood and Guts. Lots of blood, fair bit of swearing and some general naughtiness makes this film a bloody good time!
Tully (2000)
Simply a beautiful film. I'd see it again in a second!
This film crept up on me. The characters in this film are just so well written and portrayed that I found myself really sympathising and connecting with them from start to finish. Frankly I was enjoying the film so much I didn't want it to end! And the imagery was beautiful - I am a big fan of good cinematography not to mention the scenery of country USA. So the pictures took me right there with the characters.
The acting was a great surprise. I don't see many small [distribution wise] films so I was expecting ordinary acting - but I was amazed at the quality! I think many of the cast from this film will be seen doing big things real soon especially the youth in this film. I just fell in love with Anson Mount he was great and Julianne was perfectly casted in her role as the boys friend.
And the ending had me in tears. But it also had its light-hearted moments that endeared yourself to the film early on! I found this film to be a hidden treasure in a period of huge awful blockbusters like Tomb Raider and Swordfish.
I can't wait to see what Hilary Birmingham comes out with next! 10 out of 10 from me!
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Bloody Fantastic! 5 stars on all accounts loved the film!
A bloody talent of a film. This film went over so well with our audience that at the end there was complete silence as if in respect and appreciation for the film, out of 300 or so people only a handful left before the credits were over. And when the credits finished a huge cheer arose. It was like nothing I've ever experienced at the movies. I walked straight out of the movie and bought the cd, its fantastic! I'm listening to Valeria's track 5 right now it's awesome!
I might be biased cos I'm an Aussie but this has been the best film I Have seen in years. A great visual stimulation, my friend called the first 40 minutes a full body assault that attacked all the senses, you certainly can't sleep thru it! And thru-out the film there are many aussies who put in an appearance which adds a greater excitement for Australian audiences but don't worry there is enough to keep everyone interested in this film.
There are some stand out performances from Nicole and Ewan McGregor who carve up the screen with Come What May the shows only original love song. Also Jim Broadbent is a real asset who adds a lot to this film and John Leguizamo who plays Telous the dwarf well without detracting focus from the movies leads!
I am so proud that this is an Aussie production and not only is it the best we've produced but I think it'll put its mark on the world and make people stand up and take note at what us Aussies can do!
I highly recommend this film, its a simulation ride thru time with amazing sets, costumes and acting talent. 5 stars go and see it at the cinemas your a fool if u don't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
