Surrogates (2009)
Apparently today's movie-goers cannot think for themselves?
Or so the writers and producers of Surrogates seem to believe.
It was shocking how dumbed down this movie was... a five year old could have followed the storyline, yet the obvious was blatantly stated in every scene.
The effects of the robots were well done, though seeing Bruce Willis in his younger plastic form is very creepy... but the storyline left little to the imagination, which was disappointing because the idea behind the movie had sounded promising.
Overall, I would not waste your money on this. Despite it being a sci-fi/action flick, there is no reason to see this on the big screen. If you must see it, wait for DVD.. or better yet, wait for it to come on TV!
Happy-Go-Lucky (2008)
I have no clue what this was about....
... because I only made it about 20 minutes.
I can't give this an honest review, because it may have shocked me and gotten better... but I don't think so.
Poppy was beyond annoying, and the introduction of her left so little hope for the rest of the movie that I felt compelled to share my reaction here.
Sorry if you enjoyed it... please let me know if it's worth giving it a few more minutes..
Very disappointing and I wouldn't suggest paying anything for this, although if you happen to see it for free somewhere let me know what you think.
Wild Child (2008)
Don't hold it to high standards and it will exceed your expectations
You know, this is a teen movie. What can you really expect? I think, however, you will be pleasantly surprised by Wild Child. The cast doe an excellent job, with the teens carrying the movie pretty much themselves.
The story line, though mostly predictable, is nicely delivered and felt honest.
This is a great movie for families, or girls' night out! I am 26 and thoroughly enjoyed it with my friends!!! Of course, don't hold it to high standards, it won't meet them, but for what it is, it exceeded expectations.
Get Smart (2008)
A slow start... but gets better
I didn't have great hopes for this movie based on other reviews. However, looking for something light to fill a Sunday afternoon I sat down to watch it.
I have to say, that were it not for Steve Carell, I would have likely switched this off after the first 20 minutes. The storyline was childish, and it seemed to be going nowhere.
Enter Anne Hathaway. I have to say, the chemistry between Carell and Hathway (though borderline creepy!) was very entertaining. Despite the simple story, and predictable moments, I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit and ended up actually enjoying it.
Would I watch it again? Probably not. Was it a waste of time? No.
Conclusion: If you want a rainy afternoon movie for the whole family, this is a good choice.
The Affair of the Necklace (2001)
Excellent... finally feels like an honest period drama
This movie was so good I had to watch it again! Hilary Swank, as always, plays her character incredibly well.
What I liked most about the movie (besides the intriguing plot, humor, action and mystery.. yes they are all there!) was that the characters were real. There was no pretense that people back then were more proper than they are today; they had the same desires, used what they had, and made the same mistakes, just in a different setting.
Fans of Christopher Walken will be pleased to know that he has as unique a role as always, adding his special charm to the film where needed.
There are also some great outtakes on the special features, which is also unusual but very refreshing for a period drama.
I hope you rent it and enjoy it as much as I did!
