The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Really good movie - until the last 15 minutes...
Looks like they ran out of time to finish the movie... very poor ending. But the first hour and a half in an intriguing captivating. The acting performance of children in this is brilliant.
Ex Machina (2014)
Great visually, strong acting, story pace a bit too slow and predictable
Alicia Vikander was great in this film, Oscar Isaac suited the billionaire genius whose a bit crazy. Domnhall Gleeson's character was okay at times but some thing felt out of character and the ending might of been more compelling if we cared about his character?
Some really clever concepts and reveals. Visually the imagery of the film was amazing. The story at times was boring and I felt the final twist was always going to happen.
Good film to see - probably wouldn't be interested in a second viewing.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
One of the best coming of age/growing up movies
This isn't my my usual genre of movie. And I typically don't enjoy high school movies. But it was easy to see that so many parts of this moving are an A. Very good cinematography, really nice scenes when the character are out in the town.
It's a great story to be told with an emotional strong message. Emma Watson and her in movie brothers characters where the life of the show and gave amazing performances. Which was needed to make the show entertaining as The lead character is an introvert. The pacing of the movie was good I never felt bored.
Things I thought weren't perfect: A lot of key scenes are just script with narration. This felt a bit sloppy and lazy. The show told us the main character was a ready or writer I would of liked it to show use more of his personality away from when he's with friends and there's were some scenes with a light edit that look a tad artificial. Overall great movie but felt like the last 20 minutes was quickly sped through to wrap everything up.
Unknown (2011)
Great plot, told in such a boring way
Watching trailer and first 20 minutes I was Intrigued what direction this could possibly go. All further advancements lacked anything to build suspense or excitement. Audio didn't build tension. Didn't care about any of the characters. Whilst I love Schindler's List Neeson. It's unfortunate all of Neesons more recent characters are practically the same person and his acting doesn't add any range or diversity. All of his recent movies could be mistaken for the same movie.
Shutter Island (2010)
This is my personal favourite film of all time - grossly under-rated
I watched this movie for a second time immediately after watching it the first I had to see the hints. The acting in this movie by Leo, Ruffalio, Ben Kingsley is out of this world. All minor actors nail their roles. Brilliant!
Taxi Driver (1976)
A Movie well ahead of its time!
It's films like this that show you how much of a visionary Scorsese has been. The movie looks visually brilliant. He editing is fantastic, slowing of shots when the camera is in Travis' point of view and focusing on things he's looking at.
De Niro's talents are best shown in the way he shows his character slowly disintegrate into insanity.
Step Brothers (2008)
Recently re-watched this and forgot how well done the comedy is
As someone that doesn't love most comedy movies or cringe humour. Upon rewatching Step Brothers I noticed how good of comedic timing and synergy Will Farell & John Reilly had on set together.
As regards to the story a few of the plot lines were left unfinished in the end. The ending just felt thrown together and they just live happily ever after.
But rating for pure comedy it was a very good movie.
Enemy (2013)
Liked Jake Gylenhalls acting - imagery & details was interesting. Not a compelling story
I can see why your typical critic loves this movie. Every sentence and piece of imagery used is a signpost for the movies meaning & message. I found the it felt like very early in the movie you understood what was happening. The story writing didn't make me really care about any characters they all just represent elements of the story. I personally don't like the visual of the yellow/Grey grain that the film is edited with, it makes every scene feel too similar and lacks any colour. The soundtrack was very good and did build suspense. But story lacked for me.
Marriage Story (2019)
Flawless acting & directing
Whilst I wasn't terribly excited to watch a movie about a divorce a rather gloomy topic. Also not the usual type of movie. The movie was a beautiful story arc of a family, with so much true characterisations. The character weren't glamourised it felt so real. Also plenty of good moral compass moments.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Worth watching if your a fan of the series. But overall the weakest entry in the Conjuring series
There were some point of good visuals and sets to make it worth watching. The two lead actors are strong with their performances as always. The story was less compelling and interesting. This may have been due to the limits around retelling the "devil made me do it" case.
Finding out there was no real reason the antagonists chose these victims make for a less interesting story.
The Undoing (2020)
Excellent acting meet a mediocre script
Make no mistake Nicole Kidman and young after Noah Jupe are brilliant in this series. You definitely feel the emotions felt by the characters exactly when the actor intends you to.
Hugh Grant whilst a strong effort, can't help but feel he isn't quite what the film intended him too be. Perhaps as a viewer I just see the typical ROMCOM Hugh Grant and he only occasionally hits the darker more dramatic tone.
The script and writing limits the actors from being part of a great series. I feel the director could do more to make us love or at least certain characters at the film's beginning, so we are actually sad when the plot occurs, or in the films ending I think it could of been a quite emotional ending if the director did some more genuine character development for Johnathan in the opening episodes.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Strong Showmanship and vocal performances - help back by a limited script
The greatest showman allows Hugh Jackman to be at his Broadway best. And the musical sequences are some of the most fun the whole family to singalong (especially in 2nd and 3rd viewings). Although like many semi-biographical movies, after the first act it feels like the writers are just trying to think up conflict that ultimately wasn't unnecessary.
The compelling story is the protagonists ability to come from nothing himself and rise whilst empowering the less privileged circus performers.
The plot leads the lead character down a path of simply using the "freaks" for his own self benefit and when a "better option" presents itself he takes it - only somewhat redeeming himself once his "better option falls through.
Whilst it's an ordinary at best script - this shouldn't takeaway from the casts musical and performing excellence.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
A great show in every aspect!
Craig Zobel must of had an absolute ball directing this outstanding show. Also Winslet put together arguably her best performance. Her character Mare won't be forgotten by any viewers anytime soon!
Zobel had an amazing ability to make Eastown feel like a character of its own, who you feel every emotion toward. One moment you despise Eastown for the way it absorbs it's characters and then you admire Eastown for the unity of a small town and everyday people.
I'm so glad this was spanned out over 7 hours of visiting time instead of trying to fit the story into a feature film (2hrs) the character development of literally everyone featured in this show was excelled over the course of the series.
If you love a show with not just 1 but multiple plot twists you will love Mare of Eastown. You can also tell the skill of the director who forces you to believe at some point every character is guilty, followed by feeling truly sympathetic and cheering for the same character only 30 minutes later.
A great series which is almost impossible to find a flaw!
The Invisible Man (2020)
Movie of two halves
This movie has a very strong first act. The director does a great job creating environmental tension such as using first person camera footage (I believe from Adrian's point of view watching Cecilia) and subtle imperfections to things like a chair which looks as if someone is sitting in it when in fact no one is visibly there.
Overall the movie has great camera & editing work. And initially feels like a powerful piece of drama acting from the main actor but the movie turns a little wayward in the third act. Things like Cecilia so easily walking out of the hospital, or making it back to James & Sydney's house without a trail of police following her. The twist felt unnecessary. And the final scene which I felt tried to leave the audience with an ambiguous twist finish, just felt like a bad attempt at fitting in with the Horror genre. If the second half of the movie continued with the story telling of the first half and didn't try too hard it was very close to being a classic. Interested to see it the director finished the way he did to leave room for a sequel...
