Dark Side of Comedy (2022)
It's good but overtly plays the blame game
The stories are good, factual and of course, tragic. The best part is the interviews with friends or people close to the stars or comedians. The randos however, and especially Debra Wilson, are unnecessarily aggressive and indiscriminate. Her input added nothing credible and since PhD, MD doesn't flash by her name, she is out of her depth and really shouldn't have been given that platform. There is a lot of soul searching, confusion and anger, as is common to anyone who has lost someone to addiction, be it in physical death or just unable to save them to one extent or another so you connect with them and have immense empathy but there is also a heavy dose of blaming the industry and finger pointing, as is the case when anyone famous dies. Overall it's a raw and emotional look into what were, or are, hugely entertaining, but anguished individuals addressing themselves or via those close to them how this industry is a draw and very rewarding to people already on shakey footing and their realization that nobody or thing is what "broke them" so it can't be responsible for, nor can't it to any extent "fix them" but it takes a very liberal and roundabout path to them coming full circle in accepting they and they alone are ultimately responsible for their complete derailment.
The Roast of Tom Brady (2024)
Could have been stellar but they hired Kevin Hart.
I am a big fan of roasts all the way back to the Friars, Dean Martin and up and through the stellar Comedy Central roasts, save Justin Bieber. This was a decent roast and everyone carried their duties save Kevin Hart. This guy absolutely sucks as a host and has no roast etiquette. 1 hour of this 3 hour show was him laughing at himself and being incredibly stupid and not at all funny. When a supposed comedian and actor gets steamrolled by football players, your career is dead. Kevin Hart. You sucked harder than you usually or have ever sucked.
The dais was pretty par for comedian talent but the New England players and even the audience, save Kim Kardashian were entertaining and very funny. Eli Manning, Edelman and Gronkowski were incredible roasters and Tom Brady wrapped it up brilliantly. Please Netflix, for the love of all that's holy, never hire Hart to host another roast or, as God is my witness, I will drop your service like a ton of bricks.
Ethel (2012)
If it's not a drinking game, it should be...
It's certainly a Kennedy narrative of the Kennedy family. While Ethel has some reverence, especially to her children, she is a bit the bipolar matriarch and is either quite pleasant or flat out crotchety to questions. They do well to sell the story of the democratic family with mass wealth and an agenda that it is, it's everyone else's responsibility to care for the less fortunate. They never really gave up anything up, as you will see, for said fight but they really ring their bell. While the family name did play a role in some significant history, good and bad, beyond Bobby and Jack, the rest were actually by proximity only, but they try to take a lot of credit. This rather long documentary should really be a drinking game and when mommy and daddy is said, toss one back and prepare to be utterly wasted in about 20 min.
The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy (2023)
This show has a lot of appeal for a broad audience
Whether you grew up like me appreciating Eugene Levy from a comedy perspective because of his unique style or you just know him from recent things like Schitt's Creek, he endures, because he is remarkable, and his role in this show is just that. His reactions and interactions highlight his trademark dry but extremely funny humor and, as he points out often, his acting chops. I sincerely hope they continue production of this series. It's educational, entertaining with stunning landscape and a perfect perception of what he is seeing and a part of is communicated brilliantly beautifully with amazing camera work. The locals are charming and enduring. It's masterful in so many ways for what I thought would be just another travel show.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
Worst ending of a very decent series EVER.
This series was so much more than I expected and was enjoying the plot line, story and mostly, internal monologue of Dexter and then, the ending and what the!!!??? It's not only dumb as Dexter did anything he could to survive, but during his brief, and mostly tumultuous time with his son, he wouldn't have left Harrison free to go about sloppily trying to control his dark passenger having just the one "event" in which he trained him. Super sad something so utterly compelling and entertaining ended up having a worse ending then finding a burning turd in a bag on your porch and happen to be wearing holey socks. I am speechless and a little depressed. Had I known that was going to be the 'full circle', I truly wouldn't have watched this show.
Ghost Brothers (2016)
I found this show late but glad I did.
It started out with the investigators being a little too reactive. After awhile, you feel that was from legit uneasiness, because they really come into their own. The show and brothers are very funny. Of course they investigate some of the same old properties we have all seen, but they also visit locations I personally didn't have knowledge of had and some of those locations have disturbing historical relevance. Overall their intro to the locations is well presented to the audience and they have quite interesting encounters. Their equipment and interrogation techniques evolve which also helps to enhance each episode. If you like paranormal shows, this one is unique in its ability to teach viewers history of not only the US and ghost hunting techniques but it's fun to watch 3 persons who thoroughly enjoy each other participate together in something that enthralls and fascinates them.
Bender (2016)
Talk about artistic license.
Too bad they brought little of the truth to what is a fascinating true story. They made a sadly horrific history's retelling boring and mundane. Only two Benders spoke English and I get that could complicate the story telling but why change the age of the brother when it's been almost proven without a doubt Kate was in fact John Benders wife and not his sister. The backfill of assuming the Benders interrelationship was ridiculous and nonsense. Supposedly Kate did readings and touted a gift, but I am sure why they had to play Kate's gift as real and furthermore so strangely creepy. Watchable but I suggest any viewer research the true story of this family.
They/Them (2022)
This piece of....the movie was horrific.
Not entertaining, totally predictable, idiotic fairytale like ending. I would think the LGBT peoples would not support its representation of how they want gay, bisexual or trans individuals and struggles portrayed. Mean, hostile, self abusing, intolerant and rude. The concept of that camp enduring for what we can only assume is decades without law enforcement or legal intervention (regardless of his town status) is stupidly unrealistic. It could have had an opportunity to be good and I wouldn't have had an eye rolling migraine but I guess that would have required effort.
Pioneer Quest: A Year in the Real West (2000)
The things wrong with this show are plentiful.
Producer claims he planned for 3 years for this production and yet they are given effectively everything they need to build, eat, travel, and the older, supposedly religious couple, are inhumane to God's creatures. She laughs when she fails to kill the rooster and they act as if the preggie pigs torture is just life. At least Alana had regret over being the cause of its demise. I am not done with series so Lord only knows how man more poor creatures will suffer at the hands of these incompetent morons. These people and production company should have had animal cruelty charges brought against them. They do very little, they have immeasurable intervention and it all is literally so far removed from authentic and pioneer living its insane it ever made air. Even in 2000. To call this reality is laughable.
Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules (2022)
Relatively chaotic.
It's watchable but it's also very obviously overly scripted. Most celebrities parents like Pat Benetar, momma Hasselhoff, mamma Gunn and Martin Lawrence can be proud of their children. Thornton and Parker Jr should be ashamed for raising straight up bully offspring. And Thornton's son, Harry is a straight up sociopath and probable alcoholic. O'Neil pusses out and Ebie is very intriguing but overall useless. Despite every single one of them thinking they have talent are in touch with doing hard work and making their own paths, the reality of this delusion is proven over and over that they all in fact coattail riders. This was their legacy and there is no way around it so just accept it and stop denying it. Sadly it's mostly fabricated drama and their boring us over and over with their illusions they are who they are because of their own hard work. Nice try. No buy.
Murderville (2022)
Unbelievably funny and refreshing
I was tearing up. This is definitely a laugh out loud show. All episodes had their very funny moments and each trainee brought something funny and unique to their part. The constant backstory of the recurring characters is intriguing and keeps the story moving despite the outcome of the investigation. I know it's copied from a British series (as is most of our best stuff) but being this is never done before product for a US show it's next level enjoyable and Will Arnett is amazing as always.
