The Gifted (2017)
LOADED WITH POSSIBILITIES! It hypes me.
Disclaimer: I have written this review based on all the episodes, which are out, currently that is only episode 1 :=)
A show being set within the X-Men universe that followed a completely different cast and narrative than that of familiar characters we've previously seen portrayed.
My initial thoughts were negative, to say the least. I mean just hear how does the above read. Scary!
I was pretty sure this show will fail. So naturally, when I was given the chance to watch the pilot and bolster my ego by proving myself right on why this show would fail I jumped at it.
Now I can say with confidence that not only am I impressed with the direction and vision for this show, but I have a genuine interest on where this story will end up. On of the most interesting, to me, parts of this series so far is, that it isn't just trying to spin things in a new way, it's just trying to use genre identities to cover new ground. I didn't expect such a high quality from creator Matt Nix.
To sum it up, gave this show a shot.
Death Note (2017)
If you expect this to be Death Note, run away!!!!!
Its a truth of life that real life movies based on animes suck, however no one prepared me for this!
This is Americanized story is so messed, that if you have come to watch Dead note - as i did, it will blow your mind.
First lets start with the fact that everything is moved to America - > but the original characters names are kept, its awkward?
Character motivation is changed to a level, where you can not recognize the characters you once liked. For example Kira / Light, in the original used the girl to achieve his goals, he was smart, he wanted to build his own world, where he would be a God. In this Hollywood pigwash, he shares his secret i.e the Death Note with a girl in order to impress her?!? WHAT.
To sum it up. RUN AWAY FROM THIS MOVIE!
Genius (2017)
GENIUS sparked my CURIOSITY
*disclaimer: I have seen only episode 1 (it is the only episode that is released)*
Genius is, overall, handsome and reasonably compelling, but it doesn't necessarily grab the me in a way that makes me anxious to immediately see episode three.
And that's practically a necessity these days, especially in a month that is putting such extreme strain on my DVRs. It's a drama made with obvious care that could add up to something great.
But it's hard to know that for sure until we see the whole complicated equation in its entirety.
The Last Dragonslayer (2016)
Nice student project... wait what do you mean this is not a student project?
I manage to watch only 1/3 of the whole movie.
In the beginning I was saying to myself, OK I will take the bad acting and CGI, after all the movie is a TV MOVIE.
And the acting was bad, like so bad.... 10% of it was OK, 50 was mediocre, 30% was atrocious, and 10% was... I want to kill myself....
CGI was... cartoon like, no other way of describing it.
----- BUT I WAS SURE I WILL WATCH THE MOVIE!!!
then it came the story. I am an avid Sci-FI lover and dragon dreamer! But this story just didn't' make any sense!
Like a key point of the story was this girl, when she was young a magician and a king fought for who to take her, no one explained why. The magician took her, and taught her magic.
Then enters the dragon arc, I turns out that the dragons are related to magic and if they are all killed magic would die too. But wait... in this world magic is kinda dead, because people use technology?!?
Then the magician disappears and everyone is searching for him. But they don't find him.
Time passes and this girl grows up. Now there is only 1 dragon left and all the magicians in the kingdom get a vision that this Saturday, that dragon is going to get killed by the official dragonslayer.
That dragonslayer turned out to be this girl.
By this point in the movie (42 minute mark) I was like.... "X" button.
Watch this on your own recognizance :)
Inside Out (2015)
A simple story + masterful telling = powerful movie
After Pixar's Cars 2 and Monster university, I had lost some hope for the creativity in the company.
I glad to recognize I was wrong.
In core: this movie is about a girl experiencing changing in her life.
Just that, no aliens, no monsters, no cars.
But the storytelling, so powerful, so wonderful it makes an adult remember. It made me do so! All the memories, you forget - the imaginary friend, the simple everyday stuff. And how we sometimes loose joy.
But at the end we find ourself again.
And this is what this movie is all about - MAGESTIC!
The Odd Couple (2015)
Will & Grace meeting FRIENDS
Warning is needed when the show starts with this cliché joke:
"Girl: So what now? Boy: I don't know I have never come this far."
WHO WOULD LIKE TO WATCH THAT???
Okey let's see what we have after that?
One OCD like person, that comes after a long - term relationship i.e. marriage in this case (Will/Felix) --- CHECK. One funny, witty and free spirited person, that goes around in life mostly fuc*ing stuff up (Grace/Oscar) --- CHECK.
The only thing they mistakenly did is that Will is moving in Grace's apartment, wait that's not how it should be, it should be Grace moving in Will's apartment.
Final judgment: Forcefully trying to be funny (the back-roll people laughing are just KILLING me), by using an old and reliable model, with a known star, who if this was 2004-2005 would be an expensive actor, but now is relatively cheap due to no demand.
Prometheus (2012)
From the director of all those Russell Crowe movies you never saw.
From the director of all those Russell Crowe movies you never saw. And the writer of LOST's unsatisfying final episode. Comes a sort-of prequel that doesn't use the best parts of the Alien franchise.
Prometheus.
A film whose first 30 minutes are mostly landscape shots. Where two scientists are on a quest to find extraterrestrial life based on really flimsy evidence. A trillion-dollar mission manned by the worst crew in space.
A lazy captain, who leaves his crew to die.
A stoner geologist with state of the art computer maps, radio communication, mapping balls, and GPS. Who still gets lost.
An inconsistent biologist who is scared of a 2000 year old dead body.
And an idiot woman who can only run in straight lines.
A film with so much CGI, the visual effects department forgot to change anyone's heart rate. A film so forced, it attempts to connect to the Alien franchise by having someone drink a drop of black goo then impregnate our main character with an squid baby which impregnates an engineer which creates an alien that only kinda looks like the aliens in the real movies even though they already showed a picture of that queen alien on a wall.
After Earth (2013)
The most blatant example of Hollywood nepotism
From the director of—"Oh, God, not him again"comes Will Smith's biggest mistake since turning down The Matrix.
After Earth.
Get ready for the story of a talented celebrity Dad and his less talented bratty kid...who takes on a challenge he's not ready for. Watch as Will Smith, one of the world's most charismatic actors, plays a man with no charisma named Cypher Raige. But when father and son are forced to bond, disaster strikes as they crash on a terrifying version of after Earth...
"Every thing on this planet has evolved to kill humans."
And watch a movie of Will Smith watching a movie of Jaden Smith in the most blatant example of Hollywood nepotism since the 3rd generation of Wayan's Brothers.
This movie is too dumb on too many levels.
Sons of Liberty (2015)
If you know even a little history, stay away.
I'm an European, therefore I do not completely know American history, however I did have World History in high school.... and I was amazed by the stupidity of this.
Let's start with the scene of the dramatic "tea party". Now Adams while it is true that was part of Sons of Liberty and the resistance, actually tried to stop this. The day of the meeting at Old South Meeting House. After receiving a report that Governor Hutchinson had again refused to let the ships leave, Adams announced that "This meeting can do nothing further to save the country." According to a popular story, Adams's statement was a prearranged signal for the "tea party" to begin. However, this claim did not appear in print until nearly a century after the event, in a biography of Adams written by his great-grandson, who apparently misinterpreted the evidence. According to eyewitness accounts, people did not leave the meeting until ten or fifteen minutes after Adams's alleged "signal", and Adams in fact tried to stop people from leaving because the meeting was not yet over.
So as you can see it is absurd the way they are trying to portray this character.
Now let's talk about General Washington's appearance. So he enters the room of the congressional meeting and states "General Wade is a cancer, if not removed..." It is curious how a uneducated man such as Washington knows about cancer, not to mention that even thought we knew about it from ancient Greek times, the time we were finally familiar with it was between 1871 and 1874 and we are talking about cutting edge research, which will take years to become mainstream knowledge.
To be honest, History channel did warn us, by billing the series as a "dramatic interpretation of events" and a work of "historical fiction", arguing the goal of the miniseries was "to capture the spirit of the time, convey the personalities of the main characters, and focus on real events that have shaped our past". Stil I think this was no excuse for such crude mistakes.
Final judgment: If you know nothing about history, and enjoy action with modern wording in old era, this is for you. Otherwise run.
Pants on Fire (2014)
Got what I came for
Did not come with big expectations, therefor they did not get shattered. I have to admit that feels great. However on a point of view for a movie, maybe it does not sound really fantastic.
Liar liar pans of fire is the movie you expect it to be. Kinda guff, kinda stupid, a little bit funny and nothing more. The whole movie relies on a plot, that is not very interesting, i.e. that lies come true. Like true in a material form. What bothers me is that the main character, after getting a little crazy from all this, doesn't test this hypothesis. I mean if it wore I, I would at least say something crazy like... Jenifer Aniston is my girlfriend, or I have a million dollars. And see what happens.
But hey after all they needed for the plot, so who cares?
Final judgment: I time you enjoyed is time not wasted. For some people this will be true for this movie, for other not so, however if you come with low expectations, it won't be that bad an experience watching it.
The Wedding Ringer (2015)
Cuoco's nipples + a viable business idea
This movie's has two big and cool things, those are Kaley's nipples, more precisely the scene in which she does not wear bra and this business idea for a company that servers best men for hire.
As a person who is having troubles with human connections, I felt very emphatic with this movie. A question I have asked myself numerous times is do I make a mark on a person's life. And from this point and more precisely the movie's explanation for a best friend "someone that makes you feel better for yourself", this movie is a success that most people will not admit.
However, and there is always a but of course, it is not a very original movie. It relies heavy on movie clichés and well known designs.
Final judgment: As a movie I like said, Poe did not invent the words in his poems, as this movie did not invent most the scenes it used, however the order they are is what makes his poems unique. It is the same with this movie, it is quite enjoyable and id made me laugh a few times.
St. Vincent (2014)
Murray brings it one more time
The central idea of this movie is so elegant, that you won't make the connection at first. It is Saints, but not in the classical way rather modern saints. As the main character gets the task to babysit a boy which attends St.Patric school. As most of you get this is not a typical public school. It is there that we witness with our eyes what is a saint. This does not activate any stimuli for the viewer, since the protagonist is an old and grumpy man. A man that has a strange view of what a boy should know. A man that goes against the normal canons of our society by bringing an innocent youngster to the race track or to a bar. However as the story unfolds we see that those things, while unusual are not done with bad intent.
The most charming feature of the film is it's simplicity, there are no bad or good guys, just an old retired man and young boy. Kinda reminds me of UP.
Final judgment: An hour, spent with a smile.
Taken 3 (2014)
questionable plot, enjoyable action
Bryan Mills, this guy just can't get a break. Ultimately we can say this guy is bad luck Brian.
I have a few questions for the plot, most important is, where did the boyfriend of the daughter go, for the whole movie?Other than that you can not say that the movie is bad, however is not a plot masterpiece.
This movie is kinda indifferent towards itself. Nelson has to use his "skills" one more time, we see action, explosions and naked ladies.
However the feeling that this movie is made for profit does not leave us, during the whole cinematic experience. The movie feels empty, both of fun and development.
The best thing about this is probably Nelson, who at this age still can look as bad ass as ever.
Final judgment: enjoyable, but don't have big expectations.
Backstrom (2015)
If it ain't broke, don't fix it
Don't try to improve something that already works fairly well. That is the moto of this series. We got promised a protagonist, which is "overweight, offensive, irascible" detective who is engaged in a constant struggle with his "self-destructive" tendencies, and is part of a team of eccentric criminologists.
Instead we got::
***Everett Backstrom (the protagonist) : the detective that always guesses, and guess what he is right and that sometimes even surprises himself. Well even a broken clock is right twice a day.
***Genevieve Angelson (the cheerleader) : she wants to be more, but a girl, obvious daddy issues, hates the protagonist but secretly has a crush on him.
*** John Almond (the wise man) : every TV series, needs a wise black man, which is a pastor on Sunday.
*** Peter Niedermayer (the English man) : for some reason he is overly smart, sophisticated and has good looks, yep let's just put him.
I guess the writers have never heard the phrase "Necessity is the mother of invention".
Final judments: the good model, that gave us House MD, CSI, Tourchwood does not work on Backstrom. So far it does not look like the series will be promising.
American Sniper (2014)
American movie, for American "hero" in an American war, what could go wrong?
I was very intrigued with the trailer, mesmerized to say the least. The movie was another thing.
When I was the USA I met this Chris, he was no hero. Just a guy with a rifle and a sense that he was right.
For most of the patriots there is no room for the idea that Kyle might have been a good soldier but a bad guy; ()or a mediocre guy doing a difficult job badly; ()or a complex guy in a bad war who convinced himself he loved killing to cope with an impossible situation; ()or a straight-up serial killer exploiting an oppressive system that, yes, also employs lots of well-meaning, often impoverished, non-serial-killer people to do oppressive things over which they have no control.
()Or that Iraqis might be fully realised human beings with complex inner lives who find joy in food and sunshine and family, and anguish in the murders of their children.
()Or that you can support your country while thinking critically about its actions and its citizenry.
I'm even surprised to see that people vote it "Best of"...
Well what do I know, I'm just an European.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Something I haven't felt from a movie in a while
From a historic stand point the plot is full with questionable wholes.
If we live that however the movie lead us very well. Long, but not long enough to get boring. Dramatic, but just the right amount. You could actually feel the presence of the actors, the Brit in those British as they say. But not only that, you could feel a whole different era from ours, which is right since this is pre-high tech movie.
Love, realism, dreams, hopes, sadness, mystery, failure, death.
I came with great expectation from the teaser. This movie was definitely more entertaining than I thought it would be. Most of the jokes did entertain me with their finesse and subtle context, although a few do fall flat.
Everything you expect from this movie, you will get it.
88 (2015)
Not even remotely worth your time
Well you know how you hear about this story, about this girl, that will revive an old movie plot in modern times...well this is definitely what you won't like about it.
Constant flashbacks, make you fell like a moron for not understanding the storyline.
Cops are terrible shooters in this movie, it took them three tries to shoot a guy. They finally manage to do that when he was shooting in the police precinct.
A lot of clichés from the cinema world are in this movie.
This movie gets this high of a rating, just because the main character was played right. She was sexy, hot - when angry persona, and confused, scared when normal herself - still a cliché, but the actress did a good job.
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014)
Not how it used to be~~
---Spoilers--- (((DUH))) I remember the tranquility of the series and the mystic of the magic. However that is exactly what the third and final movie is not.
Let me start by pointing out some plot-holes.
*-*Hey how do we find that buried secret tomb, the director asked, well let's just leave the boy to fall in it. Like yeaaah, because this is not a big excavation with hundred of people that pass on top of the tomb, however once a little boy - who weight less than an adult passes he falls, because reasons...
*-* Once inside the boy takes his flashlight out, because let's be reasonable who doesn't carry one around, just in case you find a secret Egyptian tomb, takes a few steps inside...and then maybe a minute after the fall his father comes, not only does he find him for that short time frame, but he also manages to find a ladder so that he can descend inside.
*-* Hey do you know how we can enter that British museum, yeah let's just wait for the guard to start sleeping. Because there are no alarms inside.
*-* I can dig that objects modeled after people, animals and etc. can come to life, but statues of centaurs? And does the movie actually suggest that they existed? And if not why didn't anything else - like a fire extinguisher come alive?
*-* Hey you know what will be cool, to have a room with just one knight inside, said no museum curator EVEEEER.
*-* Do you know how to stop giant metal demon? Just electrocute it, while on top. You ask won't that affect you too? Well it should, but if you are the main protagonist it won't.
*-* Hugh Jackman.
*-* Director: Okay time to end the series. How to, how to, hm...? Well I will just make the main character quit to become a teacher. Wtf?! And after three years I will return the tablet back, which was where exactly? Well it doesn't matter as long as we get our final shot of Larry sadly, but with smile, watching the museum entry doors.
Now you will say, well this is a family/comedy movie, it's not supposed to be logical. And I agree, however even if we exclude this moments, it failed at making me laugh.
