The Menendez Brothers (2024)
Much needed insight into the case
Netflix allowing the brothers to do an in-depth interview about the events of not only that night but their lives prior to that was much needed. It's so refreshing to hear their voices after so many years. After watching this I am convinced that the abuse happened. Mainly because of how they killed their mother. They slaughtered her like a wild animal according to the prosecutor. You wouldn't kill your mother the way they did with so many bullets if you didn't hate her to your core. I began to think of how many men will actually do you serious bodily harm if you talk about their mothers. No matter how bad of a mother she is most men would go so far as attempted murder to protect their mother. So the fact that as she tried to flee they layered her with bullets mean that she was intensely hated. And you can only hate your mother that intensely if she failed to protect you from something or abused you. In this case it was both.
If you murder your mother for money you'd do so in a less rageful way such as poisoning. The menendez brothers were telling the truth and now that they have a hearing coming up i would love to see a follow up documentary on their lives after release. I gave this documentary 9 stars because I wish that Leslie Abramson, jill Lansing and Dr. Oziel would have at least spoken on camera.
Monsters (2022)
Season 2 has a message
It the same formula as Dahmer in the sense that we view everything from the killer's perspective. Unlike Dahmer who has passed away, this series is clearly trying to be a modern mouthpiece to create sympathy and help the menendez brothers get out of jail.
That being said, the cinematography was wonderful and the actors were superb. Cooper Koch reminded me so much of a young John Malkovich especially with his eyes. His acting particularly in episode 5 astounding. Many people believe that the scene at the end of episode 5 was done in one's take. There's also a scene with Erik having difficulty with the microphone in court and Koch executes that scene well. Koch is a talented young actor.
Some people felt that there was too much homo eroticism. That did not bother me. Everything felt cohesive and the only scene I felt was unnecessary was scene where the brothers Are fantasizing about getting out of prison and are shown dressing up as women. There's nothing wrong with that. It was just a wasted scene.
The series portrayed the brothers as spoiled and bratty even more so than the press of the '90s showed them to be. I was not expecting that, but even so, Ryan Murphy still creates sympathetic characters, especially in Erik. So much more was explained about how the tapes got to the police. I appreciated Dr. Oziels backstory because I knew little about it.
The last 10 minutes of the series is really surprising. It shows a perspective of kitty and Jose. So after nine episodes of looking at everything through the lens of the brothers, we finally see something through the lens of the parents. And yes, the parents never saw this coming. While no one has the right to take the life of another I do believe if the brothers were released today they would not be a threat to society.
