The Bear (2022)
Stressful but amazing
Oh my days this was stressful but I was glued to it every moment (unlike my partner who couldn't stay with it as it was so frantic) and have just watched the whole thing for the second time - especially intriguing to go back and start again after I knew who all the characters were in greater detail and their increcdible back stories.
There's not much to add that hasn't;t already been said a hundred times by others - it's funny and addictive but ultimately gives you massive satisfaction along side the emotional gut punches.
That episode with Marcus in Denmark with Will Poulter is so beautiful and still and emotional, and the seven fishes with Jamie Lee Curtis and the forks is honestly one of the best and most harrowing half hours I've ever watched.
What a show. I love Tv!
The Reunion (2022)
Solid fun
Watched this earlier in the year and just finished watching again in a 2 day session to while away the time between games in the Women's World Cup and have to say we really enjoyed this breezy, glamorous and crazy bit of TV. Thought it was brave and interesting to present the story as a whydunnit - you know from almost the very start that Ioan and his friend killed one of their teachers but the story then spun into unexpected directions that took us pleasingly by surprise.
The whole thing has a kind of surreal feel to it and there's definitely shortcomings - as others mentioned Rupert Graves playing Ioan's dad is whack (as they look kind of the same age), and like all these euro programmes it is be a bit bumpy and awkward when actors don't speak in their own language and don't get me started on the weird mad group of young women (hetradites?) who run around stalking Ioan, but there are some great moments and performances. My partner who was watching for the first time was transported by the Ukrainian actor playing the missing young woman Vinca and Dervla Kirwan was a revelation to me - I thought she came into her own so strongly in the later episodes and I really enjoyed watching the French actress playing the pregnant cop. In fact the whole thing got stronger as it went and the intrigue deepened, maybe as we got used to the accents and the feel of the directing style.
Anyway, long and short, The Reunion is a good entertaining crime story and we might even rewatch again when winter draws in to get another blast of sunshine!
Daisy Jones & the Six (2023)
Missed opportunity
Oh man what a missed opportunity - this show shoudk have had it all whatb with the vibe of its period setting and the incredible music and scene that was aroud at thet time but this just falls short on so many fronts. Funnily enough i thought it was going to be the musical content that tyriopped it up but the oroginal music that they created for the show is actualluy quite strong its just the chemistry between the actors and strange plotting that does for Daisyt Jones and the Six. Despite the lack of chemistry between the two leads (very much onM r Clafflin) the show is at its best when the band is together and making music but it takes agggggges to get them there in the desert and just as the band's story starts we keep popping out of the action to go to some weird present day interviews that suck all the emotion out of it. Show, don't tell.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
Great big old comfort blanket
This show is excellent and I knew it would become a big old comforting friend from thje moment I saw the trailer. It's so hard to find gentle comedies these days that the whole family can curl up and enjoy but Murders hits the mark straight on and has become such a firm favouritre in our house with us and our kids. I like plenty of dark drama (just come off Euphoria and started Swarm) but stuff that the whole family can watch is thin on the ground. The only comparable show I can think of that does the same as Murders is Ted Lassoo and given hom much we crave a bit of time out from the world of stress and worry I do wonder why the tv companies/streamers don't give us more of this sort of content.
The cast are amazing and ther writing is crisp and clean and often hiolarious. It's the perfect binge watch for anyone who needs a bit of time away For anyone who loves a good detective-crime-mystery story but can't handle too much darkness, this is the perfect binge-watch!
