Poor Things (2023)
Comical at times but not recomendable
I'm giving 4 stars to this movie just because some of the acting in general was decent, specifically the performance of Ema, Dafoe and Ruffalo. The use of a language being learned was well done and to me the only thing that was comical and interesting as clumsy words not made to link with each other somehow made sense.
Throughout the movie I found myself hoping to see something more, some big mystery or plot twist that would leave me in awe, as the peculiar scenario was inviting to it, but the disgusting and uncomfortable parts coupled with yet another feminist movie dwindled the light at the end of the tunnel for me. Whoever wrote the script (I didn't bother to know who it was) should know that empowering women by giving them freedom to be whores is not something new, but I understand that many viewers will find this empowerment a phenomenal thing and not hesitate in giving a 10/10 rate in the end.
Implying that men are weak because they cannot make sex as many times in a row like women, that men only want to emprison their women, and doubling down on how any man is easily destroyed by jealousy is another boring point of the movie, but then again, it's a feminist movie made to sell in these times we're in.
Unfortunately this is what Hollywood has become, when actors accept making nude and sex scenes with children in the set (I read those parts were removed for the UK version because its illegal...), and hoping to being presented with an Oscar. Sometimes I wonder what do the parents and family of these actors think about when their girls are being exposed like this, as Emma Stone was. Do they all accept it, knowing that young actors like her are seen as models for even younger generations to follow and copy? Do they think if that's ok or not? Is it moral for them? Well, it's Hollywood world so maybe not, none of them think about it, just in the money. Money in favor of sexual exploitation will always be together till the end of days. This is definitely not a movie to go out and see it in the theaters with your family, or at least if there's some reasoning in your family.
I'm sure this movie will win Oscars for obvious reasons... but as for me I will not recommend this movie to anyone, in fact I will tell people to not waste their time.
Shinobi no Ie: House of Ninjas (2024)
Please let there be Season 2
Great choreography, great storyline, great acting all around, great music. I honestly felt like some of the western music was out of place but after a while I understood this is a Netflix show after all, so they had to put something different on this. I'm glad it was not a bad script and after a while you just go with it.
I binged watched the entire season in one night. I really couldn't ask for more.
Japanese and Shinobi traditions are in without being boring, slow paced or with those awkward long periods of silence like I've seen in many of these movies where we have no idea what's going on..
This is the perfect modern martial arts series where there's an emotional connection with all characters.
Don't let the modern western music bother you, this series is so much more than that and you will have great fun.
I'm looking forward for Season 2, well done!
Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction (2023)
Delightful
The movie has gorgeous photography and it's a beauty for the eyes. The noble sensation it tries to transmit is there, the interiors of the buildings are well done, specially of the church, simply astonishing.
The story has surprising twists for a comedy-romance movie, certainly something more fresh than the more predicted stories of Hollywood. Fast paced and not boring, except for a little exaggeration - in my opinion - in key acting points from the main man, who overall did a good job alongside with the rest of the cast.
The sound score is top notch, especially the last opera at the very end, it almost made me feel like hovering.
IMHO this movie should be more higher rated. Go and watch it.
The Idol (2023)
Watch and please form your own opinion
I'm glad I watched the whole series before coming to IMDb, because I really liked the show.
I was expecting to open IMDb and see a score of at least 7 on this series. Then I went on to read the reviews to understand why such a low score. And to know that most of the reviews here are opinions made from those who only saw the first episode or the second, it's now understandable to me that many have no idea what they are talking about. The punchline of the whole story only happens in the end of the last episode, so yeah, there you go.
The main characters performance was solid, if people just forget who The Weekend is, and that the main actress is the daughter of Johnny Depp (I didn't know), I'm sure they would have a different opinion.
Having this said, maybe this series is made for those who are not familiar with any of the personalities in this show, because that alone makes people create false expectations, as I've confirmed while reading some of the reviews.
In my case, as a music producer and lover of all genres, I enjoyed the music and the artistic effort, as well as the camera work focusing on minute but precious details that add a lot to the characters.
People complaining about the nudity and that this was almost porn just made me laugh, not much to say about that really except that it seems there's a lot of frustrated sexuality out there... Guys, it's the music bizz, with young and beautiful people, in LA... just get over it. This show is about mental illness, not sex.
No other series gave me the insight on what it takes to be on that side of the insanity of the music industry. If people think none of this happens in real life, you need to live a little.
Slip (2023)
I really liked it
To me this is one of those series to be watched on a certain mood, definitely not after coming from your lousy work that you don't like (if you're in that situation), or after coming from running when the brain is too alert. I watched all episodes late at night and enjoyed it very much, maybe because of the late night tranquility.
I didn't know the main actress and she impressed me a lot, on how natural and real her performance is, specially on the laughs. I think she is fantastic and will search more of her work.
The best things of this show is in the details. If you watch it for the general story that it is and expect a certain outcome, you might find that there is no sense of direction or that it didn't work... but if you just let it go with the flow, you will certainly find some gems regarding the psychology and behavior of the characters. I also loved the soundtrack, it makes the surreal moments funny and the happy moments really sweet.
