The Hotel New Hampshire (1984)
I hate it
I hate it so much. There's too much going on and it's an unfunny confusing mess. The scenes feel so rushed. There doesn't feel like any time progressing even though they want to portray that it is. The rape scene, what the heck?! No one went to the cops after that? Not Jodie, who was gang raped, had so much evidence, her brother as witness and the other guy plus the group of the guy's friends who came to help, they all could have gone to the cops. They knew the names of all the assailants and no one did anything for them to put them in jail, SO FRUSTRATING. The bullying, racism, pedophila...there's just way too much. I honestly do not like any of the characters. I'm a huge Jodie Foster fan and it just felt like a role that's far beneath her acting ability. The incest scene with her blood brother Rob Lowe was one of the most nauseating and uncomfortable movie scenes I've ever seen. At the end, Jodie's character looking lovingly at her brother and proclaiming, "now, we're free" yeah, like both of your characters weren't already sick in the head now you're really gonna be screwed up.
BTW, bears, bears and more bears, I DON'T CARE!
I Am Slave (2010)
Amazing
How did Wunmi Mosaku not get nominated and win an Oscar for this? Isaach De Bankolé should have been nominated as well. This whole movie is so much underrated and unrecognized. This story tells of the horrors some people have to go through, some are still going through it. How some people can be truly cruel and torture the helplessly innocent for money, power and control. The movie portrays the beautiful love of a father and daughter and their struggle to retain hope to be together again. I cannot express the right words for how much this movie touched my heart. A+ for directing, producing, cinimentography, sound score, superior acting and a heartbreaking story.
The Wrong Stepmother (2019)
The movie that is just plain WRONG.
So...acting terrible, script terrible, everything terrible. If could give this movie a zero, I would.
Lets start off with the scene after breakfast when Maddie wants to spend the day with the girls. She says, "I need to get ready" even though by looking at her, she's already coming over from her house to make them breakfast and she's already dressed fine, hair and makeup good especially bc she doesn't live there so no clothes there to change into, etc. Yet she scampers off upstairs to "get ready". With her lack of self control the new mom goes into daughter's room and gets on her phone (no phone lock of course, pfft) opens email and reads her college admission essay, which is easily quite lengthy by the looks of it and yet Maddie begins to rewrite most, if not all of it then returns downstairs after changing clothes proclaiming, "I'm ready!" OK, how long was she upstairs getting ready? It would have taken her at least and hour to rewrite that essay and send it to the high school consular...I guess no one went to check on her, when she needn't more than a quick change of clothes but was gone for an hour? Unbelievably dumb.
Then when Maddie's in the backseat of Cynthia's vehicle why would any right thinking person not immediately jump out the vehicle when you find out someone broke I to your vehicle? Would anyone smart think this person isn't out to harm me? Maddie continues to get more irate and yet Cynthia stays in the vehicle. When the chord is wrapped around her neck why didn't Cynthia use her left hand to reach down and lean the seat back? I know I guess she panicked but, c'mon?
Then Maddie confronts Tyler, who just told Cynthia ALL about Maddie's obsessive, violent and crazy past with his family and then 5 minutes later there she is at his doorstep. Who opens the door without looking who's out there? Then when she's looking all crazy and sounding threatening to him, I'm sorry but he should have kicked her in the stomach, closed the door and called the police. She was on his property and with the history of her and his family he had enough ammo to were he had enough of good reason to prove to the police that he felt threatened to use self defense.
Next up we have the unveiling that Maddie rewrote Lilly's essay. After presurring her a little, she comes clean to the family. The father's reaction was ridiculously underwhelming. If I was the daughter I would have been so hurt and angry at my dad for not caring or sticking up for me. The younger sister who's old enough to understand and care about what she's hearing is instead a phone zombie and has zero reaction whatsoever to her sister's misery, the raised voices and anything in general...gotta love cell phones. After dad and Lilly leave the new mom snatches away little sister's phone thus jerking her consciousness back into reality, crying out, "why did you take my phone away?" SMH. New mom gets extra bass in her voice and reprimands and punishes the girl by taking away her phone. I guess younger sis was incapable of telling her father what Maddie said to her, how she said it and inficting a punishment when she's not the parent? Double SMH.
We supposed to believe that Lilly's friend is able to sign in to Maddies email by guessing her password? On top of that sheer unbelievabity the superb acting skills where it looks like he's inputting the same letter 5 times in a row? And voila he comes up with her password with minimal difficulty, YAY, this movie sucks.
Why kill the therapist? I know it's a loose end but c'mon, she didn't say anything and they never explained how Maddie knew Lilly was talking to her in the first place. The movie never showed Maddie discovering that the therapists' business card was gone. They also never revealed that she was following Lilly around but we must assume one of two happened since Maddie appears soon after Lilly and therapists' talk and she murders the woman.
Can Vivica just go away, please? Her playing such similar roles and her acting always being the same in these types of movies is very tiring. She really does give off that I'm better than you, know better than you, superiority complex that gets old real quick.
The good old ending, when Maddie runs up and grabs younger sister and she's shouting, "oww, you're hurting me" no one cares? Her school friends? Teachers? Parents? 👏 horrible.
The ending standoff is just so weird. Instead of weilding a knife why didn't she just try and remain normal? So I guess the new end game is to kill them all? Btw, no blood on the knife after she stabs dad, I guess that would be too realistic and too "scary" even though this is rated tv14 and it never showed any actual stabbing.
So she runs from the house and then following scene is family in the kitchen, dad recovering from stab wound and Lilly asking dad, "it's your first day back" (to work) "are you sure you're going to be OK without..." (pause) dad finishes sentence, "without Cynthia" why OH freaking WHY did both of the daughters look like they were not even sad and when Lilly said the lines she looked like she was smirking and trying to hold back a laugh. That's not the right emotion to portray when talking about a person, who let's face it, been in the family's life so long she could have been like a second mother to the girls.
No word on whereabouts of Maddie, she's probably off manipulating a new family and about to murder more innocent people.
I hate this movie with a passion.
Hidden Away (2013)
Hidden Away...SIKE!
I had to stop the movie after 15 minutes for the sheer idiocy of this movie is unfathomable. Whoever wrote/directed/produced this movie should be ashamed, it's really like they just wanted to make a film and put little to no thought into the storyline.
So the mom decides to plan this elaborate get away plan, researches and compiles a list of deceased women who are similar in age and looks as herself as to assume their identity and before enacting her and her daughter's fake death she stows this list, including a book for dummies on how to change your identity, "deep" in the attic therefore leaving behind exact evidence that would allow husband to locate her should he ever decide to clean out the attic or in this case, a racoon infestation? Lol
It takes the private investigator like an hour or less to locate the mom, I just can't waste my time on this dribble. Hidden Away should be renamed, Here I am.
For Richer or Poorer (1997)
I love this movie
I have see this movie many times since it's release. I have enjoyed it throughout my life. It's lovely to find a movie that I enjoyed as a kid and now as an adult, I still love it. The casting was spot on perfection and I ended up liking every character in this fim. I really like the comedic scenes, character development, heartfelt performances, story, music score, cinematic fimling. There is a definite feeling of wanting a more simplistic, wholesome, being grateful for your blessings and a life more in tune with nature. This is a wonderful movie, I will definitely watch this again in a few years.
Dying for a Baby (2019)
Nope
The character Jessica who is played by Sarah Minnich is easily the best acting talent in this film. Everyone else is...meh. I know that Jess is supposed to be playing the crazy person but she wasn't crazy before the accident or so we're to believe so how does somebody who is pregnant so negligently driving around while texting dropping the phone and has to swerve bc she almost runs off the road and still go after her phone in a second attempt which is what led to the car accident in the first place? I guess just a cautionary tale of a life lesson and consequences but I find it frustrating that the movie didn't have her fighting with herself as in inner turmoil in acknowledging that she's a real reason why her baby died because she made a simple dumb mistake, smh.
Since when does a hospital allow a person to volunteer without at least having a background check? They would have saw the domestic violence and the restraining order, smh.
How come when her best friend overhears that Jessica hired the man, who's supposed to be her husband, so as to lie her friend that she didn't immediately call or text her friend and tell her what she overheard but instead goes to an empty parking lot, at night, to confront Jessica? No one would ever do that and they made the character seem dumb when they didn't have to. Also, I guess there was no investigation about a hit and run that resulted in a death? No police questioning people close to her? No checking with the restaurant to see who was there at that time of evening? I guess there were no cameras in the restaurant just like there weren't any on the outside? Dumb. I sure hope the restaurant got some cameras after the fact, smh.
When the lady asks her friend to do a background check on Dave Moore, aka Jessica's real husband when she gets attacked she hits her in the head once but of course that wasn't enough so she ends up whacking her in the head with...what was it? A huge bag of flour? Yet she picked it up with such little ease you would think it weighed 5 lb but I guess it was enough to kill the lady, right? There are so many smh moments that I've lost count.
So by this point Amber knows that there's something up with Jessica because of what the character told her. That added with all the other questions that her mother was bringing up and all the suspicious behavior that Jessica has displayed so far but yet the Amber character is home alone, so pregnant and vulnerable, her doctors have already told her that she needs to make sure it all costs to remain calm for the baby and her own sake and it's also near the time of her going in to labor at any moment and yet still decides to just open the door even though it's probable that it would be Jessica because after all this is one of (according to Amber) her "closest friends" even though by now she knows what Amber lied about and manipulated herself into her life and doesn't even check the door peep hole but proceeds to open the door with no fear, thinking, "it's no big deal" I hate when people have no self-preservation or common sense in movies like this, smh.
When Jessica forces the doctor induce labor on Amber well after the needle goes in you would think that you were suddenly watching The Omen movie the way that the music tried to be so evily scary and climactic it made me LOL.
Did I mention the fact that Jessica goes from looking like a simple, sweet innocent type to a hair and makeup change making her more closely resemble, femme fatale? I guess killing a couple of people is bound to cause a personality shift to the point that you must change the way your hair and makeup look? Lol
Husband sees creepy footage of Jessica who had apparently broken into their house one evening and was spying on them all thanks to the new baby cam surveillance. So I know that his phone was battery was dead but was the other guy who was in the room with him his phone was dead as well? You mean husband couldn't call the police or even call his wife before just up and rushing over there? Smh
When Amber finally wakes up after it's all said and done, the baby's gone and she runs out of the house and you can clearly see that her belly is as flat of the board...umm, couldn't they at least have given her a smaller fake belly padding? I'm pretty sure a woman's body doesn't go from preggo to swimsuit model immediately after giving birth. It just felt beyond lazy to not make it look more believable.
Did we ever get confirmation if the doctor was dead or not?
The only part I kind of liked was near the end when it proved that Jess was beyond crazy and that her motivation was beyond revenge and that she had completely gone off the deep end. After she had taken the baby when she went to her ex-husband's house trying to get him to accept her back and that the family will be brought together again now that they had a baby. I like the whole completely delusional that she's living in a world created inside of her head.
Later we see Jessica now in a mental institution and just like a lot of these movies she tongues her meds trying to slap the viewer with the fact that she could possibly break out of the institution and that she might try to get revenge again in a sequel, lol, go ahead and make the movie, I'll probably still watch it, lol.
EDIT - one user review said that in the first scene with the car accident that it was actually a four-way stop and that the Amber also ran the stop sign along with Jessica and they were right, which means, Amber is half to blame for the accident that resulted in Jessica's baby dying along with her hysterectomy and inability to ever reproduce, smh.
Stolen Child (2012)
Frustrating
The storyline is weak and so many parts seem unnecessary. The acting is not good. The main character never even asked the uncle of the child she adopted how he even found out about the agency, tracked them and what they're doing, etc. It seems like this guy is pretty smart for figuring all that out and is shown being cautious knowing that he's dealing with dangerous people but then when he is approached at his hotel room, at night, by a guy claiming to be from his home country claiming to know him but basically, a stranger and he proceeds to turn his back on him and is letting him come into the hotel room which results in his death, so dumb. I'm sorry but the part when main character asks the hotel staff to allow her to enter a room because she left her purse and hotel card in the room would never allow a guest into the room without first having some type of identification, i.e. Name and phone number on file, the manager recognizing them as the person who rented that room, etc. To verify that it is indeed their room, DUMB.
When the main character has a meeting with another mother who adopted from the same agency and tries to explain to the woman about her suspicions about what the agency's been doing as far as stealing people's babies to sell on the baby-black-market and the heartless woman basically says even if that is true and if it makes me her a bad person then she really doesn't care. I guess we're just supposed to show people at their worst? I don't know how anyone could feel all right knowing that a mother and father had their child taken away from them and the parents are always wondering if the child is okay, if it's even alive, not knowing and always worrying and then you have the person who says they don't care and can live with that type of knowledge, well I think that's a pretty horrible type of person. I would have reported her to the FBI, hopefully after they took down that agency they went through each of the adoptions and tried to reunite children with their parents, irregardless of adoption because it was done illegally.
Even though this movie is trying to tackle a serious subject and a problem that exists in real life the flaws in this movie, the excruciating flow from scene to scene and the poor acting really bring this movie down as a whole and I feel like I wasted my time.
A Place for Annie (1994)
Love
This is one of the most beautiful and heartfelt movies I have ever seen. Sissy Spacek (Susan) is a treasured gem of an acting talent and Mary-Louise Parker (Linda) has such a haunting beauty with her acting, both are truly stunning. Truly, all the acting in this movie was spot on and fantastic.
The beginning that acknowledges how too many children who are born with disease, birth defects, disability are dumped in overcrowded hospitals that are understaffed and ill suited and are basically brought there to wait for death was so unbelievably heartbreaking.
Sissy Spacek really does have a way to engage the audience with the passion that she brings to her performances.
I like how the movie acknowledged how the system can be flawed and I love how Susan found a way around the system by means of sacrifice and love. The part when Linda told them they gave her what it felt like to be a family and the moment when she gave the letter to the baby...just wow.
There are so many moments that are wrought with such love, sacrifice and courage. I will never forget this movie, it's so beautiful.
Nanny's Nightmare (2017)
Waste of my time
I can't believe I just wasted that much of my life on this much of a terrible movie. The plot of this movie is so stupid. Why didn't the aunt get child services involved after her sister dumped boiling water on her niece? For that matter, it was in the medical records so when the mom took her to the hospital for burns I'm pretty sure that whenever it comes to minors/serious injury that child services will do an investigation.
Back to the story... Why did the guy (don't remember his name/who cares) marry this lady (aunt) in the first place? Apparently she was a stripper and it's not like she got pregnant or anything but still they got married and he acts like he doesn't love her. He fully acknowledges that she has a drug and alcohol problem but does nothing about it nor does he seem to care about her at all. Yet there is a scene when they have passionate love making but yet he treats her like he doesn't care about her, so weird. He has anger and resentment that they're having to take care of his wife's niece but he has little to no involvement with the little girl anyway. His acting stinks as well.
Anyway, so I get how maybe the step dad left the gate open so the hillbilly mom was able to drive up to the house but was the house also unlocked because the mom had no problem, that we could see, entering the house. You would think that people who are in this situation where they're trying to keep the crazy mom from finding the daughter, on top of the fact that they're wealthy, that these people would have an alarm system, right? Wrong.
So the mother of the child who's on parole and awaiting a court date to find out she'll be tried for the murder of her husband has no problem killing another person so it's quite probable that she did commited the previous murder. Now she's going to be a convict on the run for two murders and the first place she thinks about going is to her aunt and husband's beach house because the daughter suggested it?......ummm, how stupid is this lady? Once they find out that the daughter was gone they're going to look around and see if anything was missing AND they would have noticed their beach house key missing. Duh.
One of the things I hate the most in movies is when the victims get the upper hand on the attacker but don't completely subdue the attacker before running off. When they have the mom on the ground in the beach house they could have tied her up they could have knocked her out to unconsciousness, if you wanted to get creepy they could even have killed her there but what do they do? They leave the gun with the mom and go out the back door and instead of running to the left to or right where there were other houses they run straight toward the ocean.... I'm sorry but do they have the ability to turn into fish or are they just hoping that the coast guard happens to be right there? This is probably one of the worst examples in a movie I've seen of lack of common sense/survival instincts. So let's get to the end ultimately the aunt dies by being shot by her sister and Summer ends up stabbing the mother. So here we have both are dead and both of these deaths are witnessed by the little girl. Fast forward to the end and since Summer is pregnant we can assume that even if she was already pregnant at the time we're talking about maybe 5 to 8 months in the future because the little girl looks exactly the same and hasn't aged at all. She's perfectly happy skipping around/smiling and I'm sorry but I find that hard to believe that after that much trauma she would be that unburdened and happy. Maybe they got her a therapist but especially since the little girl is already bipolar on top of all the trauma of seeing her mother try to kill them all plus the aunt and mother die...idk it just feels unbelievably ridiculous.
The music was so over the top and unbearable it was funny. The acting was pretty darn bad, except for maybe the aunt the little girl's acting was so-so. This movie just felt incredibly dumb and I'm upset that I wasted my time.
Blood, Sweat and Cheer (2023)
Pleasantly surprised
I really just wanted something fun and different to watch and I got it. The fact that the mom could in no way pass off as a teenager but everyone involved has no choice but to believe it is hilarious. The whole movie was made by those bangs. NO ONE would ever believe that was real hair and yet no one in the high school said a thing. The mom's temper tantrums were LOL and at the same time disturbing. Her sister is beyond annoying, who just goes into their relatives' house without first calling/knocking?! Rude. This movie is so ridiculously beyond being believable but that's the point, success!!
Nowhereland (2016)
Didn't expect to love this but
This was pretty raw take on a harsh reality of those who are living a life like this. It was sick and disturbing to see how the mother doesn't value her daughter's worth and feels justified and even proud to coach and introduce her to this kind of lifestyle. The boyfriend was sweet but he too was so lost himself to even begin to know how to survive in the world, much less take care of her. There was so much going on in this movie, again, a lot of ugliness, hate and people who treat others with unkindness and don't care how it is affecting that person. The ending is so sad and had me crying but if it had to end with some realistic consequences then it was a fitting ending. I really didn't know what to expect going into this movie or how deep it would get but this is one of the saddest movies I've ever seen.
Instakiller (2018)
Not worth watching
I got through 25 minutes before I couldn't take it any longer. The acting is terrible and feels forced to the point of cringe. I'm sick of how bratty and disrespectful these teens are to the parents and then the parents respond with a smile? This is what happens when you don't teach your children, when the are young, about respect nor do parents discipline (no I don't mean hitting) them for bad behavior and then the kid ends up growing up and being disrespectful to you...ahhhh yeah, ya think? I hated the part where the daughter is shutting down her Internet account and it shows all her followers avidly watching in real time like they worship her...so creepy. This new lifestyle of exposing your personal life on the Internet for fame, money or in the case of this movie both those plus admittance to a fashion school. I find that appalling that a college should value that in a student to the point of acceptance or rejection. The stalker of the movie is EXTREMELY obvious to the point that it's laughable. I'm so glad I listened to myself and checked out reviews, after such low ratings, I skipped ahead and of course was right about the who the stalker is, smh.
