Arrested Development (2003)
The greatest comedy show to come out in the last 10 years
This show is not for everyone though it is a great one. If you aren't used to rapier wit in your dialog and exceptional acting from every single person on the show, then you will have to adjust if you want to get this show. The laughs just keep coming and situations the characters get into are so ludicrous they gain realism. And what a group of people too! No matter what things they do, (From framing each other for car accidents to hiding members of their family in the attic and even when the magic shows don't go just right or when the Blue Man Group just doesn't return a poor never-nude's calls (it is exactly what it sounds like)) you just have to cheer the Bluth family on. This is not a show to be missed. It was cut down in its prime but the movie will be awesome!
10/10 Watch this show!
Law & Order (1990)
The Original is the Best!
You don't have to look far to find quality TV. Law and Order has been doing it for almost 20 years. Forget about CSI and Cold Case and other imitators out there nothing tops Law and Order. Even though recently new characters that have been coming into play (almost the entire cast has changed in just the last 3 seasons leaving Lt. Van Buren and new DA Jack McCoy as the only long standing characters with Detective Ed Green's sudden departure last season)the show is still going strong and is still interesting. Even the reruns are great to watch. There are some episodes that you can really just get into.
If you haven't seen it then check it out. It is still one of the best shows out there 10 of 10
Happy Gilmore (1996)
Classic Comedy
Not since Caddyshack (the first not the second) has golf been painted in such a humorous light. It is a story that many of us can identify with. A man has a dream but happenstance causes him to change direction when tragedy strikes his family. In this case a hockey player's grandmother loses her house and he discovers a talent for golf. With help from a living golf legend this scrappy up and comer prepares to join the pro circuit finding love and a rival along the way.
There are so many classic bits and lines that you'll not regret seeing this film. I know people who don't like Sandler's work and still never miss an opportunity to see Happy Gilmore. There are even some meta-humorous elements. Such as when the character Chubbs says that his mother didn't allow him to play football. When in real life the actor actually played for the Oakland Raiders in the 1970's.
Watch this with friends. Definitely not a kids movie but it is a real blast. You are going to want this one for your own movie collection 8.5 of 10
Fringe (2008)
J.J. Abrams does it again!
Fringe is excellent. Hands down the best new show this year. If you aren't watching it you need to start. While it isn't everyone's cup of tea the tension in it is palpable with every new episode. However the chemistry between the characters has a humorous aspect that counter balances said tension. The father/son dynamic is especially amusing. Actually any time Walter comes into contact with someone new it is often quite funny. He is perhaps the best and most interesting character on the show. However the lead and the son also have a great dynamic without them fawning over each other. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they don't get involved at all. Which is in this day and age a bold choice for the development of a show, the characters and the writing. It means that they won't get lazy and fall back on two main characters being in a relationship as a lame plot device. Additionally it is nice to see a strong female lead on TV who doesn't shy away from what needs to be done. She doesn't hesitate to pull out her weapon and plug a running suspect.
While comparisons to the X-Files have been made, these do not do the show justice. Sure there's science in both of them. But oranges and apples are both fruit too. Don't let the talk of "updated X-Files" cloud your judgment. This is a show all it's own.
With 5 exciting episodes out so far and the weakest effort only in the second one (which was still good but it was a weird topic for a second show)I would give Fringe a 9 or a 10 but it is still early in the series and an 8 is respectable enough for a show of this caliber...Let's call it an 8 1/2...Oh and after only 5 episodes Fox ordered a full season's worth of episodes rather than just 13...this show is looking to be tough to beat even for longer standing shows with lots of clout like Heroes and Abrams' own Lost. NBC and ABC must be relieved...after all their hit shows are all on different nights than Fringe.
Tuesday nights have a new king and that king is called Fringe.
Silverado (1985)
One of the best!
This movie brought the fun not only back to westerns but movies in general. With a stellar cast and subtle humor at the film's soul this movie also tackles serious issues such as loyalty, loss, love, and family. Although everything is wrapped up at the end it leaves you wanting more. All of the actors are in their prime and even Kevin Costner gives a great one. And Kevin Kline fit his role like a glove. Scott Glenn plays the gruff but caring older brother. You really could believe that Glenn and Costner were brothers. Danny Glover is fantastic and his character shoots as straight as he does with his acting We can only hope that these characters will be back on the big screen someday. Until then just watch Silverado and I'm sure every time you watch it you'll see something you missed last time. Even if you didn't it's still a fun film. Get it without hesitation.
9 out of 10
Burn Notice (2007)
If you haven't watched this show...you should!
From the first preview of this show I knew it was going to be great. And I was not disappointed. Richard Dean Anderson can't hold a candle to Donovan's Westen. And his supporting characters are great in their rolls. Bruce Campbell is cast perfectly as the old spy helping out his young buddy. All of the characters are right out of real life. We all have friends like those in the show and that's where it gets it's charm from. Humor is a big part of the show even if you don't see that in the previews. The action and humor blend seamlessly in to a great show. There is really nothing I can complain about this show...except the cliffhanger at the end of Season one but one can't really complain about something like that!
10 out of 10 Watch this show!
The Untouchables (1987)
One of the best....Watch it.
This movie has everything going for it. Great story, good cast, great musical score, and of course Sean Connery. It's violent sure but not as over the top like many movies in the 1980's. Sean Connery's performance is brilliant. It's worth it to watch just because of him. Kevin Costner isn't bad either since this is the era before his career took a nosedive.
It's probably the most underrated gangster film of all time. When people talk about films like the Godfather and Scarface this film should come up as well but usually it's over looked for some reason. Sure it depicts the side of the law unlike the other two but that doesn't mean it's any less awesome. And some times the good guys don't act in ways you'd think they would I'd recommend this to anyone who is a fan of drama or action movies.
If you don't like violence you probably won't like this movie because there is quite a bit of it.
10 of 10 one of the best movies I've ever seen.
RV (2006)
Dismal all around...miss this one for your own sake
I've seen a lot of films in my day...never before have I wished I could unwatch film...until I saw RV...It's not funny, the story is boring and generic, Robin Williams couldn't even save this train wreak. He's usually at least decent but not so...not so.
There are poop jokes all throughout this film. And when there aren't poop jokes there are fart jokes.
The ONLY redeeming factor in this film is that there is a car horn that plays the theme from Star Trek.
If I could give this a zero I would do it without a second thought.
Miss this one.
Futurama: Bender's Big Score (2007)
A great comeback for a great TV Show
There have been several comparisons to the Simpsons Movie and this one. They are both very different and I personally would find it hard to compare the two. They both do different things which are good fore their characters.
However I'm talking about Bender's Big Score here so for now forget about the Simpsons. Big Score is a great film. It kept me laughing the whole way though and the animation is even better than it was before. It seemed like folks might have been a wee bit rusty coming back into these roles but after 5 years what do you expect? Also the plot does slow down at times for too long which is why it doesn't receive the coveted 10 of 10 stars.
You can watch this movie without having seen the show but I wouldn't suggest it. You should at least see a few episodes to get to know the characters before seeing this. In fact you should see the whole TV show...but well it's not on as often as it used to be since it changed stations.
Watch this film people. It's good stuff
Grindhouse (2007)
This is how movies should be made!
What a rush! If you didn't see this in theaters you missed out on how this movie should be seen. Watching it in you home just doesn't show you how awesome it is. Even so you should still see it. It has all sorts of crazy stuff going on in it. Machine Gun legs, missing scenes, and one of the best car chase in a movie while still being realistic (to a degree).
It's a crime that this movie didn't do well in the box office. The artistic value of it alone is worth the watch. It's too bad there probably won't be a sequel/new movies because of how poorly it did in theaters. Here's hoping that the DVD sales are large enough for them to do it again.
You must see this movie!
Stardust (2007)
A must see from 2007
You wouldn't be able to tell by the previews that were shown on TV and in theaters that this is a must see movie. Like several good movies in 2007 it was over looked. If you're a fan of fantasy movies that don't take themselves too seriously, something along the lines of the Princess Bride then you will love this movie. During some sequences I almost fell out of my seat from laughing so hard. It's a great film. However it's not for younger kids even with the fantasy setting. Additionally, they might not get some of the jokes so it won't be as fun for them. It's fine for teens and adults though.
I don't give it a 10 out of 10 though because for all its greatness Stardust has a few flaws. It gets slow at parts and the ending is predictable. The acting is good for the most part and some major movie stars really shine on screen (De Niro in particular) but at the same time let the other younger stars flourish in their own roles. However it does have some tedious parts.
A very solid film that should be in your collection.
