Moving On (2009)
Fantastic series
And this folks....is why I adore British TV. They play this in the afternoon! This quality TV is head and shoulders above any prime time American shows! The casting, writing, acting, the way all british tv is filmed. I simply can't watch anything but british tv. The high quality is phenomenal.
As Time Goes By (1992)
Wonderful show
Judy Dench as Jean and Geoffrey Palmer as Lionel are an absolute delight to watch. Wartime lovers that lost touch and rekindle their romance in their sunset years...it is a joy watching their relationship blossom. Its witty and charming easy television and I feel as though I'm invited into their lives. I always watch repeats. Its comforting and light and perfect to watch to relax. The supporting characters are excellent. We've had tons of giggles. Particularly with Jean's sister-in -law Penny and her husband Stephen and Lionel's father Rocky. An absolute rare jewel.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Disappo8nting
Come on. The first officer being so insubordinate and a goofy Captain. It sucked bad.over the top emotional displays...a heroish first officer? Id be more impressed if she shut up and followed orders. Couldn't even finish it. Over the top Klingon krap. I'm going back to TNG and Voyager
The Fall (2013)
Great set up huge let down spoilers
Starting third season and am really more interested in my snacks. Such a shame as it was a great set up for a long involved cat and mouse situation that took a wrong turn and dissolved into a disjointed mess. It could have really progressed well if it was better thought out. I mean honestly the sexy coroner just happens to remember a college friend that told only her about a man that attempted to strangle her in college during rough sex and low behold its him. That's just lazy writing. And all these dumb side stories that never connect like the husband and wife that were seeing paul spector over the loss of their son. That could have been tied in and played out so much better. The reporter that pops up? The sext coroner mentioned previously becomes obsolete after she rejects horny cougar stella. Again no connection. And stella.....sheesh. I mean the first time we see anything beyond iceberg tears on rare occasion is when she screams when psycho killer gets shot. Hello? Really really squandered an opportunity to have this play out well.
Father Brown (2013)
Charm Abounds
I've been gorging on UK TV (can't believe what I've missed) testing out this mystery series and that and discovered that I LIKE A lot but my preference after watching different styles, is the lighter, quirky, fun series like Father Brown. Lots of charming characters, gorgeous scenery and a lovely village. BBC is the BOMB!
I've tears in my eyes thinking about sitcoms I forced myself to watch believing this is was good as it gets. I'm stunned at the difference in quality television. I don't know what else to say except I have a lot of catching up to do! Father Brown, Cadfael, Death in Paradise, A touch of Frost Midsomer murders. I've been living in a bubble. I just said to my husband, the British camera moves leisurely, soaking up the countryside. Wonderful shots of landscapes and gorgeous plants of all kinds (I love the English admiration and respect for the art of gardening and nature in general). The camera pauses and lets you hear the wind and sounds of nature as the cast goes about their business. It actually adds to the tension so beautifully...a prolonged creaking sound, a shot of leaves blowing on trees. Our eyes are treated to gorgeous old buildings, streets, shops and quirky guest stars with their fabulous character portrayals. We see unusual hobbies, situations, an array of real faces and all ages in all their imperfected glory.Actors aren't chosen for cookie cutter beauty or age but the character that shows on their faces and ability to act. How wonderful to see all ages!!! I find the older the more great fun it is! BBC TV doesn't hide them away! We see distinguished, frumpy, classy, nutty, prissy, scatterbrained, intellectual, funny flirtatious. ...... On American TV there's one actress to portray seniors, Betty White whom is limited to either childlike, cranky or a dirty old lady. The TV mysetry/detective shows I was used to viewing are noisy, cheap and gimmicky. Ugly buildings and constant shots of car doors slamming shut with generic 30 somethings getting in and out passing off their ability to stride self importantly as acting...boring botoxed faces with capped teeth... detectives with no depth or range of emotions,no wit or charm or style as they storm in and out of ugly buildings interrogating guest characters that are all boobs, hair and teeth between 20 and 30. Graphic unnecessary sex scenes for shock...never again. I'm a convert. Father Brown is relaxing, highly enjoyable and plain old FUN!!!
DCI Banks (2010)
Rather silly
Watched the first episode won't watch another. DCI Bank's emotional expressions were frequently inappropriate, immature for a DCI for sure and downright ridiculous at times. I mean the last scene of the first episode was eye rolling. Then you have the Catz character. One minute
DCI Banks and her are meeting and the next they're drinking and conversing like old lovers. The plot was uneven, all over the place. I can't take this show seriously after that mess. No flow, no depth or believability with characters. Focused on irrelevant aspects and ignored proper tension building and story flow. Probably one of the most disjointed detective shows I've ever seen.
Midsomer Murders (1997)
Light hearted fun
I really appreciate this show. No, it's not a really serious dramatic murder mystery but it's FUN to watch. I get all comfortable in my chair and it's like a mini vacation. I settle into my chair with a nice cup of tea and I'm transported to some English village, a manor, a farm, a pub and it's a slow unravelling. By the time the shows done, I have formed bonds with the locals of the episode. I mean does it get better than this? I don't want noise and car chases and all seriousness or over the top smut. This is wry and dry and just the ticket. It's light but the characters are wonderful and although the stories aren't going to make your eyes pop when the murderer is discovered, you don't care. It's the getting there that's such a good time. I will watch this over and over.
Case Histories (2011)
Like the sun going down
I enjoyed the opening episodes however it really is like slowly drowning in misery. No thanks. It just doesn't have the charm or quirkiness or any original or even interesting character traits that slowly grow on you...you get to understand the character better, such as Vera. This character actually goes backwards. I found myself getting more and more exasperated with his descent. I was really disappointed and can't be bothered to finish it. That loud folk music that comes from nowhere isn't helping either. It's weird because I've just finished watching a few episodes about a week ago and all that sticks in my mind is the first 3 because after those, it was forgettable. And although I appreciate the camera's sweeping Scottish landscape views, I wonder is there ever a sunny day there? His castmates were ill cast (except for the first episode with the sisters. There should have been more involvement between him and her. Ifound his secretary annoying.
All in all a disappointment, a slow wade into misery with little to redeem it.
