Wolf Like Me (2022)
Whole is more than sum of its parts
This is a series begged to be watched in one sitting. Feature length would have worked better. Unlike comparisons to Santa Clarita Diet, the 'supernatural' is metaphoric of grief, mental illness and love. Viewed through this prism, it is a beautiful tale. Yes, many small tweaks could be made but, arguably, it's those imperfections which add to the power of the argument. Make it through the first 3 episodes and you will be reimbursed with its finale.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Jessie Buckley can't compete
I had such high expectations bur Jessie Buckley as a younger Olivia Colman just doesn't cut it. While a fine actor, this was the wrong casting. It was always going to be difficult to find a counterpart to compliment Olivia's screen prescience and subtilty. It's really unfortunate for an otherwise fine film.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Great fun with disturbing social commentary
The professional critics seem to have missed the point entirely. Ignore them. Stella cast with A+ performances. Fantastic critique on science vs politics vs celebrity. Sadly though, an all too real 'potential' reality.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Visually Stunning
A beautiful piece of art. A masterpiece of flawed characters yet somewhat disjointed. Very Campion in that there's always a level needing to be scratched of which we are deprived. Performances are fantastic but the letdown is clarity in the players motivation.
