The Beach (2000)
Bad.
The general premise is good, but the delivery leaves much to be desired. Main characters are shallow and annoying, the lead in particular. Pretty much all of them have unrealistic behavior and motivations for their actions, and the plot loses most of the sense in the second half of the movie.
Good parts are the visuals, and the music, so there is some value for late 90s, early 00s nostalgia. But that is pretty much it.
Not recommended.
The Hustle (2019)
Liked this version too.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Bedtime Story leave a big pair of shoes to fill.
As with all remakes, this one had a big challenge, how to measure up with the two great and memorable classics.
Me being a huge fan of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, made me a bit skeptical if this could work, especially with some flops with gender reversal of the story being hype.
Yet, it worked out perfectly. It is refreshing, there are nice twists to the story to make it more 21st century material. Anne and Rebel make a good comedy duo here.
It is hard to find a comedy these years that actually makes you laugh - this one works really well.
Dune: Part One (2021)
Colorful, weird, trip to the Dune.
I looked forward to this movie and was not disappointed.
What to begin with? Music, visuals, costumes, scenery... it is like a dream. A good dream. The directing is going a bit slow, but that is how Dune should be.
Maybe it will not work out for people who are not fans of the Dune universe - the tempo, and the setting of the story may throw someone off... But if you like to have some weirdness and originality in your SciFi, then try it out - you'll be pleasantly surprised.
One fair warning - maybe have some glossary of Dune universe, to understand better the setting, and the terms used, since it will give you a better perspective, and better experience in general.
In short, if not obvious, I liked the movie. Looking forward to the sequels.
Nimby (2020)
Blows.
Boy did this movie suck.
The premise sounds interesting, and the actors are doing their best - acting is quite fine actually. Even the characters are interesting, and rather colorful.
The bad? Plot turns into a boring standoff, which drags on for the whole length of the movie. The characters turn into a mush of cliches, and are predictable. The events and reactions become unrealistic and story gets boring quick.
So it drags on, instead of picking up pace, and the occasional "plot twists" are some cartoonish nonsense moments which really didn't work for me.
My advice, save time, skip this movie.
Remélem legközelebb sikerül meghalnod:) (2018)
Not really working out.
Let me first say that I am a great fan of Hungarian cinema. There are many good Hungarian moves, even great ones. This one is not one of them, it has some potential in the start, but the plot gets flimsy really fast.
The acting is OK, even though the actors are not famous (at least I haven't seen them in any other movies)
Directing is pretty good too, you can feel the atmosphere, the story is delivered with a good pace, making the movie watchable at least.
But the scenario is unrealistic, full of holes, much of the plot is forced. Ending is also somehow lacking. I don't recommend it, except as a Hungarian lesson, as there is lot of useful slang / easy sentences.
Igra sudbine (2020)
Horrible. Just avoid it.
This is just unbearable to watch.
Almost everything is bad with this show.
The writing is idiotic, with cheap plot, and humor that makes one cringe.
The production is almost home-made, with cheap sets, and even cheaper costumes.
Acting is mostly non-existing, but here and there it appears.
A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
Skip it.
I remember when this movie aired 16 years ago... I haven't watched it, forgot about it and recently saw it on TV.
It started OK. Acting is not really good, characters are not that interesting, but the visuals are promising. Jim Carrey is Jim Carrey. The baby is probably the most interesting character, which really shouldn't be the case, for any movie.
But less than thirty or so minutes, the movie just gives up on having a plot. And characters become even more boring, to the point I just stopped caring for them.
Save your time, don't watch it.
Gone Girl (2014)
Original idea, some plot holes.
It is definitely an original and interesting movie. Basic idea works well, especially in the first half. Problem is it is too unrealistic, especially as the movie unravels.
Acting was decent, though some of the characters were a bit off, hard to believe in.
Overall, if you want a fun and original movie, this could work for you.
The Lobster (2015)
A sick, sad world.
But I am not sure what that audience is.
It is strange, robotic, and dark. This would all be good if it was also amusing, or intriguing, but unfortunately the novelty of the plot wears out really fast, characters are empty shells, attempts of black humor fail, and the occasional violence is just making you more depressed.
It just isn't clicking well together.
I guess there is an audience for this, but I would not recommend it.
Red Sparrow (2018)
Good scenery, decent acting, weak plot
I always love a good spy flick. Unfortunately, this isn't a good one.
It is more realistic than Salt, since it lacks silly / impossible action sequences.
It also has good scenery, and good actors. It has a brutal and dark atmosphere, fitting to a spy underworld theme.
And that is all that is good about it.
The rest is a black and white story, about a girl unwillingly stuck in a fight between the good CIA agents (hah!) and evil Russian agents, that are also ugly and stupid, with plot elements that are hard to believe in.
A shame really.
Video jela, zelen bor (1992)
Probably the last truly Yugoslavian movie (that was good)
Fun plot, fun characters, and excellent acting.
This little surreal comedy/drama revolves around two brothers and their respective families, one in Yugoslavia (Serbia, to be precise) and another in Germany.
One day they get a great idea to communicate through video recordings, that they send to each other via post.
This triggers an unexpected turn of events, loaded with trivial sibling rivalry, jealousy and vanity, all pictured through black humor.
All in all a solid flick, great actors and a good scenario.
Directing is also great, silently integrating a bit of the atmosphere of 1991 (starting of the breakup of SFRY).
A must see for all fans of a Yugoslavian movie scene.
