Les rois mages (2001)
Très amusant
I saw this movie last night on TV: and I haven't laughed so much for a very long time.
The first hour or so, when the three Magi make their way to Paris, and then explore, had me in stitches. Their "old world" speech and actions in today' world lent itself to much humour. The high level of humour dropped off at the half way point and things became a bit darker, though still funny.
Yet I still greatly enjoyed the movie. Plenty to ponder, especially as Christmas becomes all the more material and commercial. The idea of a bit of magic in today's world, and something people can believe in, struck a chord with me.
Good Bye Lenin! (2003)
Simply Wonderful!
I saw this movie while I was in Berlin in March 2003..and loved it! The concept is very original and the plot takes you along for a fantastic ride. Add to this a talented cast and you have, for me, one of my favourites movies of 2003.
This movie has just come out in Australia, and I am definitely off to see it again!
Japanese Story (2003)
Absolutely Wonderful!
I saw this movie today, and I loved it. I can understand certain people not liking it, as I have disliked other movies that have been raved about. But I cannot understand a distinct hatred, unless the viewers were expecting something else.
However, to me, this film was simply amazing and wonderful. I am in no sense an "art house" person: I see whatever I think may take my fancy. Though slow (yet amusing and interesting nonetheless) in the first half, the second half took me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions I was ill prepared for. I love Toni Collette, and this was a great performance. Gotaro Tsunashima was also superb.
I would heartily recommend this movie with no reservations.
Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Fantastic! Wish I had of known about this film earlier!
After a "Movie of the Week" rating in a TV Guide I tuned into this last night expecting the best, and received much, much more! My sides are still aching today!
I cannot add more to what others have said here. While not au fait with many "older" movies (I'm a beginner buff ;-)), I love Hepburn and Grant, and together they are simply mesmerizing. This movie is so full of belly-aching laughter moments and characters you adore and at the same time find hilariously funny.
Go and see it ASAP if you have not!
