La vaca que cantó una canción hacia el futuro (2022)
Great surrealist film with lots to think about
This is a very nice surrealist-style film. It's not weird, it just presents ideas in a surrealistic, symbolic manner. The story is nice, and the visuals are outstanding. It made me think, which is what I like. Some of the action requires the audience to interpret what is going on and what it means. It is not like a Bunuel film, it is more symbolic, not a juxtaposition of social norms. This film is very much in the style of a lot of South American films - symbolism and dreamy sequences to tell a story with depth and meaning. I wish I knew where to stream it so I can watch it again. If you can find it, you might enjoy it. I thought it was one of the best films at the Film Fest where I saw it.
Resident Alien: Escape from New York (2022)
Dogma 95
Very exciting that this episode was an attempt to shoot in Dogma 95 style. Even the director was not credited, as far as I could tell (Claudia Yarmy, or ?). Of course, several Dogma rules were broken, but for film experts it was exciting to see this attempt.
Winter's End (2005)
Ridiculous plot, poorly made
Why the high reviews for this film? This film is almost impossible to watch. It is gruesome, ridiculous, violent, and ignorant. It is also very poorly made with no cinematic qualities of interest - not acting, cinematography, editing, well, or anything worthy at all! What in the world are people finding of value here? It is not entertaining, not interesting, borderline laughable, with no message or point of view. How can viewers give it high ratings? Are the ratings all from people with money interest in the movie?
The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years (2016)
Okay doc, but not great
I am a Beatles fan, so I love watching them play and talk. I am also a film expert. This is not a very good documentary. It is great to see if you like the Beatles or want to learn about a few years they were popular. However, the film is like a news reel. It is just one fact after another. Sometimes there are even pictures of album covers with a tag line telling how long the album was #1. Then it moves on to the next "fact." It is like watching a news show. A documentary needs more character development and story. There was very little here. I would like to see what Werner Herzog would do with this material. That would be a documentary! Also, this film shows only a positive side to the Beatles and their place in history. You can see why Paul and Ringo endorsed the film and went to the opening. A little more deep, substantive character development was needed. To just say that John and Paul lost their mothers when they were young and then to move on... well, not very good. In summary, I recommend the film because it is a historical look (or partial look) at the greatest pop band and entertainment phenomenon in history. Also, the music and performances and screaming girls are curious and fun. However, don't expect a great documentary.
Dans la maison (2012)
Not a narrative, just suggestions
This film is not for most people. There is no narrative plot, only suggestions of what might be included in a short story. Maybe this character could be like this, maybe this could happen, maybe that character needs more substance, what if she did this, etc. There is no dynamic conflict, no drama, no emotional investment by the viewers because anything could happen and nothing is real, it's only suggestions about where a story might go. Unfortunately, that could be an interesting idea if the suggestions were not banal, but they are banal. So, for me, and I believe for most viewers, this is not worth the time.
Modigliani (2004)
No.
No. No. Nooooo. Nooooooooooo. Typical Hollywood dirge. Disgusting. Crap. Unwathchable. Another Godfather. Nothing of redeeming value. Nothing. Not one thing. None. Don't watch this. If you want to watch a film about an artist, watch Lust for Life. Or, watch paint dry. It will be better for you and more entertaining. At least you won't have anger issues or nightmares. And, you'll see real paint. God help us! God save us from Hollywood style movies. I mean propaganda. I mean lectures. I mean violent, juvenile, pop-philosophy manipulations. I mean artificial, staged, formulaic, insipid, exaggerated, preposterous, and most importantly, phony garbage. No!
