Grotesque 2 (2024)
Give 'em hell, Mildred!
Grotesque 2 is a worthy sequel that is as funny as the original. The first Grotesque movie was an excellent Mildred Moyer origin story and the sequel builds on that character perfectly. Director Brandon Rhinnes brings back a lot of actors from the first movie in new roles which is great because the cast is excellent. Julie Whelan, who was a standout in the original shines again in the sequel. She is fantastic in these sort of roles, she's terrifying. She's scarier than Mildred Moyer. Whelan is really funny, as well, and her delivery left me in stitches more than once.
Elizabeth Chamberlain shines as Mildred again, of course. The running gag about Mildred's (slightly) new identity, and how she looks familiar is hilarious. The jokes are often corny but they land because Chamberlain is a great comedic actress, and I found myself laughing when I probably should have been groaning, even after multiple watches.
The supporting cast is great as well, with lots of familiar faces from the original, such as Jaime Hill, Tom Antoni, and many others. It took me a couple of watches to realize Jade Benoit, one of the evil camp counsellors in Grotesque 2, was one of the sarcastic homeless people in the original. She's great too. Everybody's really funny, they're almost a Canadian horror version of Broken Lizard.
The practical effects are very well done, as with the original movie the kills look good and they're fun. The movie is well lit, you can always see what is happening, and the sound levels are consistent throughout, so the movie avoids the usual pitfalls that often trip up low budget indie horror films.
Grotesque 2, as with the original, is my brand of horror comedy. Like Shaun of Dead, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, and Snatchers (2019), the emphasis here is really on the comedy and these silly, slightly goofy Grotesque movies are truly funny. This is a sequel that lives up to the original, like Godfather II and Empire Strikes Back. Fans of the original will definitely enjoy Grotesque 2. I eagerly await a third instalment to the franchise and if we don't get one I'm going to go full Mildred Moyer. Or worse, I'll go full Karen, Julie Whelan style.
Grotesque (2022)
Hilarious horror comedy from the Great White North.
Grotesque was released in 2022 and I'm surprised I'd never heard of until recently. I watch a lot of indie horror movies and it's a horror comedy, my favorite, so I don't know how I missed it for so long. This is a very funny movie. Low budget indie horror comedy is harder to pull off than a straight up low budget slasher because good comedy requires great writing and great delivery. Slashers can get away with weak writing and acting as long as the kills are fun and practical effects look good. Luckily writer/director Brandon Rhiness is a funny guy who knows how to write a funny movie. He also assembled a great cast who understood the assignment and had the acting chops to pull it off. My idea of great horror comedy is Snatchers (2019), Shaun of the Dead, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, and more recently, Brad Twigg's Crackcoon. I don't consider a horror comedy successful unless I'm laughing out loud, and like all these examples of great horror comedies, Grotesque definitely had us chortling.
The cast is wonderful. The "mean girls" are perfect, and are led by the ultimate Karen, Blanche, played by Julie Whelan who absolutely nails the role. When an actor playing an unlikable role makes you despise the character you know they killed the part. Julie's portrayal of Blanche reminds me of Aida Turturro as Janice Soprano which I think is the gold standard for an actor doing a great job making people absolutely loathe the character. These are performances that genuinely elicit emotions from the audience.
Jaime Hill of Skinamarink fame is great as unappreciated mean girl wannabe Nina, and Tom Antoni stands out as Dr. Walsh. One of my favourite parts of the movie is the scene with the sarcastic homeless people, they were all great. Grotesque probably has the best golf scene of any movie outside of Happy Gilmore, and the photo shoot scene is another hilarious bit.
Elizabeth Chamberlain is brilliant as the lead character Mildred. In addition to being an accomplished singer Chamberlain is a very funny actress. Grotesque is essentially a Mildred origin story, but think Joker, not Batman. There's already a great sequel, Grotesque 2, that was released this year. Unlike the second Joker movie, Grotesque 2 actually lives up to the original (but that's a different review).
Grotesque's score is perfect and the soundtrack is fun. Chamberlain's original song "Casually Suicidal" is catchy and Chamberlain is an exceptional singer, in fact she recently released a new song with Srvent titled Beast Mode. It's great, the video is on YouTube.
Production quality is high, every scene is well lit, I never struggled to see what is happening. Dialogue is clear and sound levels, even when the audio transitions from dialogue to music, are consistent, I wasn't constantly adjusting the volume. Poor lighting and poor sound quality or uneven audio levels often plague lower budget productions but happily Grotesque gets it all right.
The practical effects are well done and there are many fun and inventive kills. The emphasis is on the comedy aspect of the kills, as opposed to mindless gore, and the tone is always light and jovial, like the other horror comedies I mentioned earlier. But don't get me wrong, there's still lots of blood and guts flying around.
Grotesque's under 80 minute runtime is perfect, it never drags and it's never boring. It's a quick, easy watch, and if you haven't seen it yet it's currently streaming free on Tubi. I definitely recommend it for every fan of horror comedies, this is a good one.
Devil's Knight (2024)
Mahal Empire has done it again! Another great movie!
I just watched the latest Mahal Empire movie, Devil's Knight, which will be premiering just in time for Halloween. If you're familiar with Mahal Empire movies you know they make high quality indie horror movies with budgets in the ballpark of $300k-$400k. These aren't ultra low-to-no-budget $5-$20k indie horror movies, they're polished and have high production value. They're not quite Terrifier 3, but they're miles beyond most of the ultra low budget stuff we watch on Tubi.
If you've seen previous Mahal Empire movies such as Attack of the Unknown, Bridge of the Doomed, Bermuda Island, Night of the Tommyknockers, Bloodthirst, or Arena Wars you'll recognize a lot of actors from this massive ensemble cast. Even if you're unfamiliar with Mahal movies, you'll recognize Daniel Baldwin, who I've loved since Homicide: Life on the Street, and Oscar nominee Eric Roberts who was fantastic in Christopher Nolan's Hollywood blockbuster The Dark Knight. Angie Everhart (Bordello of Blood, Another 9 1/2 weeks) is another familiar face, and John Wells, who was excellent as the lead in Arena Wars and Bermuda Island, shines again here.
As I've said many times in the past, Greg Tally is a chameleon. I first saw Tally in Bermuda Island and Craving, and it's hard to believe those two characters were played by the same actor. He does it again in Devil's Night. He's basically the Gary Oldman of indie horror, he successfully undergoes a transformation for every movie role.
Mahal Empire regulars Darryl Goldberg and Janet Wang have an awesome scene together in this, Janet's character is fantastic and I'm pleased to see her in a role that really shows off how talented she is. She shines in Devil's Knight. I expect to see her in even bigger and better roles in the future. Bishop Stevens looks great (and huge!) as the Minotaur. Wesley Cannon and Denny Nolan are a couple of other Mahal regulars you'll recognize, and indie legend Rudy Ledbetter makes an appearance - drink! Kevin Hager is great as the King. Victor V Gelsomino, another Mahal staple not only acts in this one, but is also one of the writers, credited along with director Adam Werth.
Mahal Empire movies use a lot of supporter talent and these actors consistently give better performances than many established "big name" actors who appear in other low budget indie movies, which is a testament to the great directors the Mahal brothers hire, and shows a quality director is one who can get the best performances out of their cast. Adam Werth, who directed Devil's Night and Bermuda Island, and Michael Su who was the director of photography on Devil's Knight, and who previously directed Bloodthirst and Bridge of the Doomed, illustrate how great directors can elevate their cast. I've heard Craving director J. Horton has been tapped to direct a Mahal movie in the future and he's another director who really makes the most of what he has to work with. If you're an aspiring actor just starting out and you want great, top quality footage with high production value for your reel, sign on to a Mahal Empire movie.
Joanna David did a fantastic job on the costumes, everything has an authentic feel, especially the armor. The Mahal brothers went all out and leased an actual castle for this movie, they didn't just film it all in front of a green screen as many lower budget movies would have to do out of necessity. It makes an incredible difference and really shows through in the final product. Tyler David Gilbert's score is great and sets the medieval tone perfectly. Really adds to the film and sucks you into the era.
Vanessa Giacoletti's makeup work is phenomenal, John Wells and Janet Wang in particular looked excellent. Tom Devlin (Daredevil,Red Dragon) is a master of practical effects and a true artist. The Bone Demon and Hook Creature both look fantastic. Devlin's team did an incredible job and there are lots of great kills with phenomenal practical effects. Lots of blood flying around in this one.
Stunt coordinator Terence J. Rotolo did an amazing job with the fight choreography, this is an action movie as much as it's a horror movie, and there are several very well acted fight scenes that looked far more believable and realistic than what I usually see in indie horror. One action sequence that really stood out was a sword fight between Kim Kelly and Sarah Nicklin, who both absolutely nailed it. Again, Mahal Empire movies really are a step up from most of the indie content I watch. I love no budget horror movies but you can really see the difference in quality when you're watching a Mahal movie.
I won't spoil the ending, obviously, but my son definitely wants a sequel to this one. Make sure you check this out when it is released on VOD and physical media, and stick around through the end credits so you don't miss the mid credit scene!
Terrifier 3 (2024)
I died watching Terrifier 3
Terrifier 3 was the most horrific thing I have ever experienced, I am traumatized for life. Christmas is ruined forever. I puked three times before the opening credits, do not eat anything before seeing this movie. My friend had a seizure and bit off his tongue, and people were fainting left and right. Absolutely not appropriate for anyone of any age or gender. Do not watch Terrifier 3 under any circumstances because this movie will probably kill you. If you survive you'll need years of therapy. I missed the end because I died. My kid loved it. Can't wait to see it again. Nine out of ten stars.
Babezilla vs the Cyber Skanks: Rise of MechaBabezilla (2024)
The greatest sequel since Godfather II and Empire Strikes Back
If you enjoyed the first Babezilla movie, you'll love this sequel. It's as silly, ridiculous, and horny as the original. It has a great cast and it's stuffed with funny gags, fantastic costumes and props, and hilarious special effects.
Director/writer AJ Chambers is a really funny guy and I love all his movies. He has outdone himself again.
Stephanie Love is back as Babezilla and is better than ever. She's fantastic in this role, I loved her in the original and she's even better in the sequel. Jessa Flux (Murdercise) is hilarious as Master Beta. Hoj Bob regular Raven Foyt shines as well (she was unforgettable in Lust, Magic, and the Witches' Sabbath). Indie horror staples Clint Beaver and Kelsey Livengood are great in this too, and a big shout out to producer/actor Tony Kimball who is a major part of Hoj Bob films. Indie horror newbie Bobbi Jo is fantastic as the titular villain MechaBabezilla, I'm sure we'll be seeing more of her in the future. Ginger Lynn plays Obi-Wan-esque Momzilla perfectly and I was delighted to see Gorachand Saha back as the president. Perfect casting all around.
This movie is a lot of fun and fans of the original won't want to miss it! I really hope we see a third Babezilla installment in the future.
Babezilla vs the Zombie Whorde (2022)
Instant Indie Classic
If you haven't had the pleasure of catching the original Babezilla, let me catch you up: this movie is a riotous blend of humor, absurdity, and campy fun that hits all the right notes for fans of offbeat indie comedies. Although it's been out for a while, better late than never to dive into this zany ride!
From the get-go, it's clear that *Babezilla* thrives on its unrestrained silliness. AJ Chambers, who's clearly a comedic genius, delivers yet another laugh-out-loud performance. Chambers' humor isn't confined to this movie alone-his short "Attack of the 50 Foot Sphincter from Space" is equally delightful and can be found on YouTube for those craving more of his brand of comedy. His knack for creating genuinely funny content shines through in Babezilla, proving once again that he's a master of mirth.
Stephanie Love, embodying the titular Babezilla, delivers a performance that's as entertaining as it is outrageous. Her comedic timing and the sheer audacity of her scenes, especially involving various phallic foods, are played against a backdrop of an incredibly catchy soundtrack. It's not just the gags that make this film so enjoyable-AJ's music choices amplify the comedic atmosphere, creating a sensory feast that'll have you both laughing and hungry.
The film's premise is unapologetically ridiculous, and that's precisely where its charm lies. It's a no-holds-barred experience packed with gags, hot women, sexual innuendo, and hilariously over-the-top special effects. What's refreshing is that despite the film's absurdity, it avoids the pitfall of excessive dialogue that drags down many indie horrors. At a brisk 60 minutes, Babezilla keeps the pace sharp and the laughs coming without any filler.
On a technical level, Babezilla doesn't disappoint. The lighting is well-managed, allowing viewers to clearly see the action unfold. The dialogue is crisp and the audio levels are well-balanced-elements that can make or break a low-budget indie film. Thankfully, Babezilla handles these aspects with competence, ensuring that the focus remains on the fun rather than technical flaws.
Casting is another highlight. Gora Chand Saha as the President is a standout, delivering a performance that's as memorable as it is unexpected. Indie favorite Clint Beaver, who's always a joy to watch, brings his usual charm to the film. Tony Kimball, a big part of HojBob movies on both sides of the camera, also contributes significantly, adding another layer of familiarity and fun.
If you're a fan of irreverent humor, over-the-top gags, and enjoy a good laugh, Babezilla is definitely worth your time. It's a film that doesn't take itself seriously and revels in its own absurdity. Whether you're a teenage boy, a teenage lesbian, or just someone with a taste for unconventional comedy, this movie is a guaranteed good time. My indie horror buddies will find plenty to love in this outrageous masterpiece.
Air Fryer Slaughter (2024)
GREATEST KILLER AIR FRYER MOVIE OF ALL TIME
If you're a fan of offbeat horror comedies with a nostalgic nod to the 80s, Air Fryer Slaughter is a must-watch. This Shot on Video (SOV) schlock fest captures the essence of the best Troma movies while boasting its own unique flair, not to mention a special appearance by Troma legend Lloyd Kaufman.
Directed by the incredibly talented Matthew Mark Hunter, this film is a love letter to the SOV era, and it succeeds spectacularly. Hunter's script is packed with laugh-out-loud moments, absurdly clever gags, and a steady stream of ridiculous one-liners that will keep you entertained from start to finish. His direction, coupled with Ron George's impressive practical effects, brings an irresistible charm to the table.
One of the major triumphs of Air Fryer Slaughter is its technical execution. Unlike many indie horror films plagued by inconsistent sound levels or murky lighting, this movie gets it right. The sound is crisp, so you won't be fiddling with the volume, and the dialogue is clear and easy to follow. The lighting is spot-on, ensuring you won't miss any of the action. These aspects might seem like basic necessities, but they can make or break a viewing experience, and Hunter's attention to detail in these areas is commendable.
The film's SOV aesthetic- actually shot on video rather than with a digital filter-gives it an authentic and nostalgic look that perfectly complements its over-the-top premise. And speaking of the premise, Air Fryer Slaughter delivers exactly what it promises: a killer air fryer wreaking havoc with a slew of over-the-top kills and gratuitous nudity. It's a wild ride that never slows down, making sure you stay engaged with its constant flow of outrageous moments.
What's particularly exciting about this film is its international cast and the impressive array of indie horror actors from around the globe. It's like a horror fan's dream team, and seeing so many familiar faces adds an extra layer of fun. The movie is crammed with remote roles and cameos, making it a veritable who's who of indie horror talent.
Air Fryer Slaughter is a rollicking celebration of indie horror and 80s nostalgia. It's a film that doesn't take itself too seriously, and that's exactly what makes it so enjoyable. Don't forget to stick around until the very end for a surprise that's as satisfying as a Marvel post-credit scene. If you love offbeat horror comedies with a healthy dose of silliness, this movie will not disappoint.
The Legend of Crick Foot (2024)
Laugh out loud no-budget mockumentary!
The Legend of Crick Foot" is a hilarious mockumentary that proves you don't need a Hollywood budget (or any budget at all) to deliver big laughs. Director and mockumentarian Bone Jawson weaves together knee-slapping performances from indie favorites like Mel Helfin, Jessa Flux, Chanda Rawlings, and Matt Burns in this mostly remote-filmed laugh fest about a Bigfoot-esque cryptid with a hotdog obsession. With its under 75-minute runtime, the film flies by, thanks to a barrage of hilarious short skits featuring a large number of talented actors portraying eccentric characters. Whether you're a mockumentary fan or simply in need of a good laugh, "The Legend of Crick Foot" is a must-watch.
Big Shark (2023)
The Best Audience Participation Movie Since Rocky Horror
"Big Shark" splashes into the shark movie genre with a unique twist that's as unpredictable as its enigmatic creator, Tommy Wiseau. I had the privilege of catching its Canadian premiere amidst a sea of enthusiastic "The Room" aficionados, with Greg Sestero himself gracing the event. The energy in the theater was electric, resembling a blend of chaos and jubilation.
What sets "Big Shark" apart is its embrace of audience participation. While cult classics like "Rocky Horror" and "The Room" boast established interactive rituals, this film dared fans to improvise, test waters, and discover what tickled their funny bones. The result? A cacophony of laughter, occasional dialogue drowning in the uproar, and surprisingly, impromptu musical renditions echoing throughout the theater. Yes, singing took center stage alongside the film's antics.
Unlike its predecessor, "The Room," "Big Shark" feels purposefully engineered for audience engagement. Tommy Wiseau, the mastermind behind this madness, seemingly orchestrated this pandemonium intentionally (or did he?). His deliberate or perhaps serendipitous inclusion of participatory elements pays off handsomely, elevating the viewing experience to an interactive extravaganza.
For fans of "The Room" or anyone reveling in the delight of interactive cinema, "Big Shark" is a must-watch. Wiseau's creation, arguably the apex predator of shark movies in 2023, swims circles around the disappointing "Meg 2." I left the theater eagerly anticipating a second viewing, a sentiment echoed by the audience around me.
"Big Shark" isn't just a movie; it's an event. Dive into this cinematic whirlpool if it graces your city-you're guaranteed a rollercoaster of hilarity and, dare I say, a newfound appreciation for shark-themed mayhem.
The Woodmen (2023)
Terrifying Found Footage Horror
"WOODMEN" is a diamond in the rough - a low-budget found footage horror that packs a punch. The trio of Anna Clary, Dan Grogan, and Hunter Nino deliver standout performances, anchoring the film with their authenticity. Their portrayal of a chilling encounter with a violent clan in the Great Smoky Mountains feels alarmingly real, creating a genuine sense of dread that lingers throughout the movie.
What sets this indie gem apart is its commitment to solid, believable acting, elevating the narrative and ensuring an immersive experience. Amidst the scares, there are spine-tingling moments that will have you on the edge of your seat. Plus, the appearances by L. C. Holt and Nancy Anne Ridder add an extra layer of intrigue for horror aficionados.
As the fourth installment of the Cryptidverse by Horror Dadz Productions, "WOODMEN" seamlessly integrates into this shared horror universe. Clocking in at just under 75 minutes, its well-paced storyline keeps you hooked, complemented by commendable lighting that allows the outdoor night scenes to shine-quite literally. Thankfully, the clear audio mixing ensures every spine-chilling dialogue is easily comprehensible.
For fans of found footage horror, "WOODMEN" is a must-watch. It not only stands on its own as a gripping thriller but also enriches the larger Horror Dadz Cryptidverse. And don't rush out when the credits roll-the familiar voices might just add another layer to this captivating tale.
With this strong addition to their repertoire, the anticipation for what the Horror Dadz will conjure next is palpable. "WOODMEN" sets a high bar and leaves audiences eagerly awaiting the next spine-tingling installment.
XXX-mas (2023)
Better watch out Ho Ho Hos, Santa is coming to town!
"XXX-Mas" is a low-budget indie horror masterpiece that doesn't hold back on holiday thrills and chills! The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast led by Drew Marvick, Morrigan Thompson, Jessa Flux, Jonathan May, Chris Ruppert, and the iconic Felissa Rose, who deliver top-notch performances that elevate the movie.
Drew Marvick's portrayal of an indestructible killer Santa addicted to cookies and milk is a standout, bringing a terrifyingly festive edge to the character. The costumes, especially Drew's Santa get-up, are remarkably authentic, making him look more like the real deal than your typical mall Santa.
What sets "XXX-Mas" apart is its commitment to practical effects, which bring the gore and kills to life in a vivid and believable manner. The lone VFX kill is seamlessly integrated, showcasing the filmmakers' dedication to quality and authenticity.
The movie's soundtrack is filled with classic Christmas tunes and adds a layer of festive ambiance to the blood-splattered chaos. From the outset, the kills come thick and fast, making use of the large ensemble cast to create suspense and unpredictability. Director James Dean doesn't shy away from delivering what the title promises - there are plenty of thrills, spills, and ample doses of both horror and holiday titillation.
Clocking in at a brisk 72 minutes, "XXX-Mas" wastes no time, making it a perfect addition to the seasonal watchlist. It's an instant Christmas classic that promises annual revisits, thanks to its unabashed embrace of the holiday spirit, mixed with a healthy dose of horror. Special mention goes to Rudy Ledbetter, a consistent presence in indie horror, adding his signature touch to the film.
For lovers of festive frights, "XXX-Mas" is a must-watch, offering a gleefully twisted take on the yuletide season that'll leave viewers both horrified and filled with holiday cheer.
Lust, Magic, and the Witches' Sabbath (2023)
"Lust, Magic, and the Witches' Sabbath" is a devilish delight!
"Lust, Magic, and the Witches' Sabbath" is a devilishly delightful treat for fans of indie horror, and Morrigan Thompson's magnetic presence only adds to its allure. As a devoted fan of Morrigan's work in the indie horror scene, I was thrilled to see her take the lead in this wild ride of a film.
Director A J Chambers, known for his quirky and adventurous films like "Babezilla vs the Zombie Whorde" and "Attack of the 50 foot Sphincter from Space," once again delivers an offbeat yet entertaining experience. This time, he plunges audiences into a world where young Morrigan's quest for a change of scenery leads her straight into the heart of a sultry, blood-soaked witches' Sabbath.
The casting is a standout, featuring the legendary Ari Lehman, the original Jason Voorhees, portraying the Devil himself. Morrigan Thompson holds her own, bringing depth and a sense of gritty determination to her character amidst the chaos. Clint Beaver complements the ensemble with his engaging performance, adding to the film's sleazy, yet oddly charming atmosphere, while Ivy Smith shines in her role as religious zealot Crazy Mary.
One of the film's strong suits is its soundtrack, which sets the mood perfectly, enhancing the eerie and seductive ambiance. Despite its short one-hour runtime, "Lust, Magic, and the Witches' Sabbath" wastes no time in delivering a rollercoaster of gore, magic, and unabashed fun.
For enthusiasts of indie horror looking for a unique and thrilling experience, this film is a must-watch. It's a raucous, blood-spattered romp that leaves a lasting impression, thanks to its stellar cast, quirky direction, and a twisted storyline that refuses to be forgotten.
I Slay on Christmas (2023)

"I Slay on Christmas" is a festive frightfest that proves big scares can come in small budgets. The spine-chilling anthology takes you on a yuletide journey through the unexpected, with standout segments by indie horror maestros Derek Braasch, James Panetta, Marcelo Fabani, Phil Herman, and Joel D. Wynkoop.
The movie kicks off with a bang, thanks to a stellar soundtrack setting the tone for the holiday horror to unfold. Despite the limited budget, the practical effects are top-notch, bringing the Christmas terrors to life in gruesome detail.
The talent on display is impressive, with well-acted segments featuring familiar faces from the indie horror scene. Phil Herman shines in the wraparound segment, adding a touch of sinister charm. "All Chopped Up and Nowhere to Go" delivers laughs with Joel and M. Catherine Wynkoop, along with Sean Donohue's comedic prowess.
"The Best Company" surprises with its twist, "Re Gifting" brings humor with witty dialogue and a funny storyline featuring the delightful Debbie D. The grand finale, "Christmas Revenge," showcases A. J. Laird and Nina Trader as an excellent Santa and Mrs. Claus, while Heather Harlow steals the spotlight as the sexiest elf of all time.
This Christmas horror anthology is not for the faint of heart but promises a thrilling experience. With its replay value and instant classic status, "I Slay on Christmas" is a must-watch tradition after the little ones have nestled into bed on Christmas Eve. Bloodthirst (2023)
A Remarkable Indie Horror Gem Starring Tara Reid!
In a cinematic landscape often dominated by high-budget blockbusters and flashy special effects, "Bloodthirst," brought to us by the visionary minds at Mahal Empire, shines as a beacon of creativity, passion, and sheer tenacity. This post-apocalyptic vampire thriller proves that a limited budget can't hold back the power of an engaging story and a dedicated cast and crew.
Set in a desolate post-apocalyptic world overrun by vampires, "Bloodthirst" introduces us to the rugged and relentless John Shepard, portrayed with grit and gravitas by the ever-talented Costas Mandylor, known for his memorable roles in the Saw franchise. Mandylor's portrayal of the Vampire Hunter is nothing short of riveting, as he seamlessly embodies the character's toughness, determination, and unwavering commitment to his mission.
At the heart of the film is a classic battle of good versus evil, with Tara Reid, of American Pie fame, stepping into the role of the enigmatic Vampire Queen. Reid's performance is surprisingly compelling, showcasing a depth and intensity that many may not have expected. Her portrayal adds layers to the story, making it all the more engaging.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, with Robert LaSardo, Bishop Stevens, and Sarah French delivering noteworthy performances that enhance the overall quality of the film. Each character adds a unique element to the story, creating a rich tapestry of personalities in this dark, post-apocalyptic world.
What "Bloodthirst" lacks in big-budget spectacle, it more than makes up for with its well-crafted storytelling and an intriguing twist on the vampire genre. Directorial choices by Michael Su display a keen eye for making the most of their resources, and the result is a film that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
One of the film's strongest assets is its world-building. Despite the budget constraints, the production team has managed to create a convincing post-apocalyptic landscape overrun by vampires. The set design, makeup, and practical effects work together harmoniously, immersing the audience in this grim, bloodthirsty world.
The plot unfolds with a sense of urgency, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats as John Shepard embarks on his dangerous quest to eliminate the master vampire. It's a thrilling ride, filled with suspense, action, and unexpected twists that will have you guessing until the very end.
"Bloodthirst" is a testament to the passion and dedication of independent filmmakers who refuse to be limited by budget constraints. It proves that a compelling story and a committed cast can transcend financial limitations, delivering a cinematic experience that leaves a lasting impression.
In a world where big budgets often overshadow the true essence of storytelling, "Bloodthirst" stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through creativity, determination, and a deep love for the art of filmmaking. Don't let its low-budget status deter you; this film is a must-see for anyone who appreciates a thrilling, post-apocalyptic vampire tale brought to life by a talented ensemble of actors and filmmakers. "Bloodthirst" will leave you thirsting for more and eagerly anticipating Mahal Empire's future endeavors in the world of cinema.
Attack of the Corn Zombies (2023)
Another great movie from Acrostar Films!
"Attack of the Corn Zombies" is a delightful and terrifying indie sci-fi horror film brought to life by the talented folks at Acrostar Films. Known for their earlier indie gems like "Trepidity," "It Came From Somewhere," and "Desperate Souls," Acrostar Films continues to impress with their latest offering, blending a cast of familiar indie actors with a true horror icon, Lynn Lowry!
Set in 1969, the film takes us to a small Midwest town where infected corn crops lead to a nightmarish outbreak of the undead. With the town cut off from the outside world, a group of friends and family find themselves facing a relentless horde of corn zombies, and it's a thrilling, hair-raising experience from start to finish.
What truly sets "Attack of the Corn Zombies" apart is its remarkable practical effects. The low-budget nature of the film, funded through crowdfunding on Indiegogo, might have initially raised some doubts, but the creative team at Acrostar Films has truly excelled in making every penny count. The gruesome, visceral makeup and effects work on the zombie horde is nothing short of impressive, capturing the gory essence of classic horror and splattering it across the screen in all its terrifying glory.
The writing in the film is a pleasant surprise, seamlessly blending humor and suspense to keep the audience engaged throughout. The film takes a tongue-in-cheek approach, with witty dialogue and humorous situations, making it both a scarefest and an entertaining comedy. The character development is surprisingly well-executed, allowing us to connect with and root for the diverse group of survivors as they face off against the corn zombies.
The direction by the dynamic duo of Steve Hermann and Ashley Hefner is commendable. They manage to maintain a tension-filled atmosphere while infusing the movie with a distinct indie charm. Their creative vision brings the story to life, and their ability to deliver impactful scares is genuinely praiseworthy.
Adding to the film's allure is the inclusion of the horror icon Lynn Lowry, known for her roles in classics like "The Crazies," "Cat People," and "Bathtub Shark Attack." Her presence lends a touch of nostalgia to the film and elevates the overall experience.
"Attack of the Corn Zombies" is an indie horror gem that showcases the resilience and creativity of Acrostar Films. The practical effects, the writing, and the direction all come together to deliver a delightful and terrifying cinematic experience. If you're a fan of indie horror and appreciate a blend of humor with your scares, this movie is a must-see. So grab some popcorn (just not from infected corn) and enjoy the twisted and thrilling world of "Attack of the Corn Zombies."
The 3rd Channel (2023)
A must watch for fans of Halloween III: Season of the Witch!
"The 3rd Channel" is a delightful surprise for fans of the classic Halloween III Season of the Witch. This low-budget fan film, which serves as a sequel to the cult classic, manages to capture the essence and intrigue of its predecessor while adding a fresh and compelling twist to the storyline.
The movie follows the journey of Jessica Kelly, a young mechanical engineering graduate stuck in a mundane job, until a charismatic businessman presents her with an unusual inheritance. As Jessica delves into the mysteries surrounding her family's history, her life takes a captivating turn.
One of the most remarkable aspects of "The 3rd Channel" is the use of the original film's locations, providing a sense of nostalgia for die-hard fans. This connection to the original sets the stage for an exciting and eerie journey back to the world of Halloween III.
Writer and director Michelle Blasky deserves praise for her exceptional work in crafting a storyline that seamlessly fits within the Halloween universe. Her passion for the source material is evident, and her ability to create a narrative that both respects the original and introduces new elements is truly commendable.
The film's practical effects, coupled with some really fun CGI, make for a compelling viewing experience. The blend of old-school practical effects with modern technology adds to the movie's charm. The use of practical effects reminds us of the magic that can be created on a limited budget, making this fan film a testament to creativity.
The performances by the indie actors are solid and convincing, and they breathe life into their respective characters. While the budget may not be blockbuster-sized, the cast's dedication and talent shine through, drawing the audience deeper into the unfolding mystery.

Murdercise (2023)
KILLER BODIES, KILLER LAUGHS, KILLER MOVIE
Just watched Paul Ragsdale and Angelica De Alba's latest movie MURDERCISE and we absolutely loved it. As longtime fans of Paul and Angie's movies, we've seen the progression of their work from Cinco de Mayo through Streets of Vengeance and Slashlorette Party. With every project they refine their art and the movies just keep getting better and better.
Murdercise is a call back to 80s horror movies like Death Spa and Killer Workout, and Paul and Angie absolutely nailed the 80s aesthetic. Having lived through the 80s myself, I can attest the score, costumes and sets are perfect. If you're a fan of 80s horror, you're going to love this movie.
Murdercise has incredible production value for a crowdfunded indie horror. It looks and sounds great, with a fantastic soundtrack and quality sound mixing. Two things can quickly kill a low budget movie, poor lighting and bad audio. Murdercise shines in both areas, it's well lit and it sounds great.
The script is another way in which Murdercise shines. Many indie horror movies have awesome practical effects and cool kills, but weak dialogue. The dialogue in Murdercise is smart and funny. Indie darling Kansas Bowling's (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Psycho Ape) character has some hilarious dialogue and Kansas plays the part perfectly. I laughed out loud at several of her lines. She is GREAT in this movie. Jessa Daisy, Drew Marvick and Nina Lanee Kent are also fantastic in their roles. Jessa has a scene that had us in tears from laughing. The entire movie is really well cast and well acted, Paul and Angie really know how to get the best out of their actors and the result is a quality production. Oh and I would be remiss if I didn't mention that most of the cast of Murdercise look like they're straight out of a modeling agency.
Clocking in at just under 90 minutes, Murdercise is well paced and never drags, it's an easy fun watch. It took us longer than 90 minutes to watch it, however, because some of the scenes were so funny we kept rewinding and watching again. Congrats to everyone involved, this is a movie people are really going to enjoy.
Bathtub Shark Attack (2023)
Hilarious and Gory Shot-on-Video Masterpiece
If you're a fan of SOV horror movies, you're going to love Bathtub Shark Attack. This no-budget gore fest is HILARIOUS and features indie film darling Lynn Lowry from The Crazies and Cat People, who adds a touch of class to the project.
The stars of the movie are Ben Deitels and Ruby Craft. Their lack of chemistry is palpable, awkward, and laugh out loud funny. Madeline Deering, who wrote the script (and directed the movie), has a wicked sense of humour, and Deitels and Craft are perfectly cast.
Famous actor Tom Gross makes an appearance, as does his brother Tim. You'll also see indie staple Drew Marvick, and Keith Monahan reprises his role of Timmy from Spirit Animal, n'at. Special shoutout to indie legend Brutus the Shark!
I'm a big fan of Deering whose previous SOV movie Spirit Animal is a favorite of mine. She did not disappoint with Bathtub Shark Attack. Lots of laughs, lots of gore, and a WTAF ending that yinz'll be thinking about for days.
Wolf Hollow (2023)
Fun indie werewolf movie that punches above its weight
I love werewolf movies. An American Werewolf in London, The Howling. Dog Soldiers, Wolf Cop, and Ginger Snaps are some of my favorite werewolf movies. So I have been anxious to see how a low budget indie werewolf movie like Wolf Hollow would hold up to the greats. I'm happy to say Wolf Hollow is a worthy addition to the genre. Despite its small budget, the werewolves and practical effects look great. Well written and well acted, it's a compelling story that moves at a quick pace. Kudos to director Mark Cantu, who does a lot with a little and clearly knows how to get the best out of his actors.
Speaking of the actors, lots of familiar faces in this one, including Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Lynn Lowry (The Crazies, Shivers), Hannah Fierman (V/H/S), and Angel Bradford, who is in practically every indie horror movie these days.
The movie starts with a bang, and the tension never really lets up, there's never a dull moment. There's plenty of action. Wolf Hollow's 80 minute runtime is perfect, you won't be looking at your watch during this one. If you like werewolf movies, you'll definitely want to check out Wolf Hollow.
Camp Blood 666 Part 2: Exorcism of the Clown (2023)
Fun Addition to this Cult Indie Franchise
Producer David Sterling is back with another addition to his cult franchise Camp Blood. Camp Blood 666 Part 2: Exorcism of the Clown is a worthy sequel to the original, and a fun addition to the Camp Blood universe. Director Will Collazo Jr. And writer Julie Anne Prescott did a great job of capturing the spirit of the previous Camp Blood movies.
Lots of kills in this installment, with a fun mix of practical and VFX effects. Marvin Maddicks Jr. Did an excellent job scoring the movie, he sets the tone perfectly. There are too many great performances to mention them all by name here, but I was happy to see indie stalwarts Tim Hatch and Jamie Morgan, as well as up and comers David Perry and Heather Harlow, who are quickly becoming indie horror staples, in significant roles. I also loved seeing Clint Beaver in his recurring role as a newscaster. If an indie movie has a newscaster and it's not Clint Beaver, what are they even doing? If you're a fan of indie horror, you're going to see a lot of familiar faces in Camp Blood 666 Part 2.
Clocking in at a brisk 71 minute runtime, the movie doesn't drag. It's well paced and the perfect length for an indie horror. You won't be looking at your watch during this one.
I had a lot of fun with this movie and I'm excited to see Will and Julie's next movie, Amityville Turkey Day, a sequel to Amityville Thanksgiving.
Something Walks in the Woods (2023)
Eerie Found Footage Horror
Just watched "Something Walks in the Woods", an indie horror found footage mockumentary. This is a solid effort by William Howard, it's a mostly one man show that succeeds in setting a creepy tone as Howard spends a night in the woods in the hopes of catching a glimpse of a local ghost legend. Fans of Blair Witch style fan footage movies will appreciate this one, it'll definitely make you think twice the next time you plan on camping in a tent. Now I really can't wait to see Howard's next project, The Great Dismal, a Bigfoot indie horror movie. If you're into ghosts, cryptids, and other similar legends, Howard is your man! I'll be watching for his future projects with interest.
Doomsday Stories (2023)
Fun Virus Anthology! Perfect for a post COVID audience.
Just watched Phil Herman's Doomsday Stories. Don't be alarmed by the 2 hour runtime, it's an anthology with several short stories, so the runtime is appropriate and the pacing is brisk. The stories are all a reasonable length. I won't get into spoilers but Phil Herman directs and stars in the wraparound wherein he tells stories of survivors of the "Meanies" virus. The shorts are all well done and entertaining, but my personal favorites are "A Broken Promise" by Derek Braasch, "187 Times" by Joel D Wynkoop, and Herman's wraparound story. "187 Times" is a time travel short and I really enjoyed it.
The other stories are "Bomb Threats" and "Forever Man". I especially enjoyed the zombie makeup, and the practical as well as VFX effects in Forever Man. It's a lot of fun.
The nice thing about anthologies is there is something for everyone and while I'm sure you'll have your favorites, these are all solid shorts. Check out Doomsday Stories, the stories are especially relevant in the post pandemic world we're living in.
Special shout out to The Donner Party who perform the opening and closing songs to the movie. Great stuff! I'll definitely be listening to more of them in the future!
Craving (2023)
A successful slow burn, the payoff is well worth the wait!
I can't review a slow burn movie without invoking Jaws, because while I'm not usually a fan of slow burn movies, I do appreciate them when they're well done, and Jaws is one of my favorite horror movies. Low budget indie slow burns are usually a mess, they don't typically have the quality of acting, writing, or pacing to pull it off. Craving, however, is a slow burn success. While most successful low budget horror movies lean heavily on high kill counts and constant violence to keep the viewers interested, Craving is very character driven, and the director J. Horton, and the actors are skilled enough to pull it off. Horton's effective use of flashbacks aid in the storytelling and character development. I never found the time long, I wasn't looking at my watch, Craving is well paced and clocking it at just under 90 minutes, it's the perfect length for what it is.
Once the shark is finally revealed, so to speak, the results are fantastic. Robert Bravo is an SFX master, and the practical effects in Craving are top notch. The creature in Craving looks great, and the carnage, when it finally comes, entirely justifies the wait. Lovers of violence and gore will leave feeling satisfied. No spoilers, but one kill in particular is going to have audiences talking!
Craving is a better than average indie horror movie, fans of the genre should definitely check it out when they can.
Amber Road (2022)
William McNamara and Janet Wang shine in this low budget horror!
Amber Road has a fantastic cast, with some big name talent like Hollywood legend Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down), and Robert LaSardo (Death Race, CSI Miami) in addition to a talented group of actors you'll recognize if you follow the indie scene. I recently saw Janet Wang in Bermuda Island, but this is the first time I've seen her in a lead role. Get used to hearing her name! Wang and McNamara really shine in their roles as a married couple imprisoned by a killer. Rachel Riley is also great in her role, but I hesitate to single anyone out because the acting in general is great. Director B. Luciano Barsuglia clearly knows how to get the best out of his cast.
Amber Road is NOT for the squeamish. The torture scenes are well done and believable, and made me squirm more than once. Great job by the SFX crew.
Amber Road is well paced and with a short runtime of just under 90 minutes, it's a quick watch that never drags. Definitely worth watching if you're a fan of indie horror. 8/10 stars.
