Morbius (2022)
Haters Gonna Hate - BUT I LOVED IT!
Great special effects, lots of action, good acting - but why do so many people hate this movie? I admit I haven't read the comics so I went into this movie with an open mind. I'm a life-long SF and horror fan, and this movie worked for me both as a superhero movie and as a twist on the vampire genre - so double thumbs up from me! Maybe it strayed too much from the comics for some fans? Maybe some just hate Jared Leto? Maybe some are hating because the internet is too often like that (hating for the fun of it because others are doing the same)? I say give the movie a chance, leave any preconceived ideas at the door, and be prepared to be entertained!
CODA (2021)
Pulled Me In And Made Me Fall In Love
I'm a guy who usually watches sci-fi and action movies so this film was not what I would normally watch. I won't give away the plot - plenty of others will do that! :) Instead what I will say is the story sucked me in from beginning to the end, I fell in love with the whole family (and Mr V - you'll see), I loved the music, it brought me to tears - more than once - and I was left satisfied at the end because I had an EXPERIENCE. A very rare 10/10 from me.
The Silence (2019)
I Like Sci-Fi But This Was Just Dumb
There are so many holes in this movie but one of the biggest for me (and it is so fundamental!) was the idea that a deaf girl would somehow be better than people with hearing at keeping quiet - REALLY? A person with hearing who is trying to keep quiet while walking and who makes a slight noise could immediately stop, try to be quieter, etc. A deaf person on the other hand would be relatively oblivious to whatever noises they are making - and in this movie that should be fatal! Anyway, if you can ignore all the holes, the slightly below par CGI, etc. the movie is still reasonably entertaining, hence 3 stars.
Salvation (2017)
The 2 Seasons are Self-Contained and Worth Watching
I just finished watching the second season of Salvation and I recommend it to all sci-fi and conspiracy fans.
For:
1) The story arc is self-contained in the two seasons.
2) There's a great final twist in the last episode.
3) There are plenty of twists and turns throughout the 2 seasons and the story pace doesn't wane.
4) Much of the science is believable.
Against:
1) People with such high IQs shouldn't behave so dumb/emotional so often (but if they were all too logical all the time there would be no humanity or drama).
2) There is also some relatively unbelievable science (but fortunately not too much to be distracting - unless you are a real stickler for such things, in which case stick to documentaries or you'll never be happy!).
3) Yes, the second season ended with the door wide open to further seasons so the story isn't quite finished in that sense - but the first two seasons are, thankfully, self contained so I didn't feel like I was left hanging due to Salvation being cancelled.
Salvation isn't perfect but it is one of the better sci-fi/conspiracy series in the last few years and deserves to be on your watch list.
An Accidental Zombie (Named Ted) (2017)
A Steaming Pile Of...
OK, it had a modest twist on what is a zombie, vampire, etc. (therefore it gets 2 instead of 1 out of 10). Otherwise, this was a badly made, poorly scripted, terribly acted, low budget steaming pile of... You get the idea!
The Row (2018)
Not Great But Not Bad Either
I think many of the 3 and lower ratings for this movie are just too harsh.
Yes, you could complain about frenetic camera work at times, some predictable plot, and some of the secondary characters were not so plausible (head detective and cops that looked old enough to be students).
However, the main characters were well cast and their acting was decent, the story unpeeled at a good pace through the movie, I didn't get bored while watching it and the ending was satisfying - overall, I enjoyed it!
IMO this is a good college/slasher/suspense movie.
Siberia (2018)
Most Negative Reviewers Didn't Get The Ending They Wanted
I'm trying not to give anything away here but I'm quite annoyed at the number of reviewers who are giving this movie a 1 rating. The acting was decent, the story was decent, the directing and photography were decent (even if nothing was really outstanding). Some people said it was too slow but I think the pacing was very consistent and helped set a certain mood. There are hints in the movie as to how it might end - but some people clearly weren't happy that they didn't quite get the unrealistic western action hero ending they would have preferred.
The movie is a decent 6 and, even though I also was hoping for a different ending and felt cheated at first, I then realised the actual ending was the right ending.
So ends my review.
California Dreaming (2017)
Don't Believe The Glowing reviews!
Don't believe the glowing reviews!
This is definitely a B movie at best. The acting is mostly awful, sound is poor at times, the lack of budget is also apparent and the plot is formulaic and unbelievable.
The only plus I'll give it is there is a reasonable amount of action action (
+1) and it moves along at a good pace (+1). Otherwise, save your time as there are so many better movies out there.
The Recall (2017)
It Is What It Is
The ridiculously negative reviews of this movie from some people are simply not justified. If, like me, you are a sci-fi fan who also likes the occasional dose of horror and you watch movies to be entertained (rather then sitting there trying to pick holes all the time) then you will enjoy this movie.
What I mean by "be entertained": Was the story engaging and did it move along at a good pace? Check! Were the actors believable (remembering this is a sci-fi film)? Check! Were the special effects good? Check! Would I watch a sequel? Check!
Unfortunately the wave of negative reviews from haters of possibly fake positive reviews has probably killed the chances for a sequel. That's a shame because, while the movie is self-contained, there are enough plot threads that I would love to see developed further.
The Machine (2013)
Best of British Sci-Fi
I was surprised by how good this movie was - brilliant story, great acting and excellent special effects. Given it was apparently made on a budget of less than 1,000,000 pounds, I don't know how the special effects could be so good (unless almost everybody worked for percentages in which case congrats to all of them)!
The story is very much in the tradition of British Sci-Fi with its dark dystopian future setting. It also makes the viewer think while at the same time keeping your attention and moving along at a good pace.
Some people will over-analyse the movie and find some minor faults but in my opinion this movie is as good as or better than many of the "blockbusters" I've seen.
