A Different Man (2024)
Absolutely sublime exploration of character
Brilliant exploration of human frailty, highly recommend. Better than many of A24 recent productions. Few films take chances in such a bold regard, developing a character and then removing the attributes that actually shape the character to study what else is possible. Perhaps metaphorically the study is a comparison of who we are, based on our self-described attributes, versus who would could be, should we have the power to make changes. Although there are aspects of the narrative that rush the development of Edward, the meta-analysis of the character through the theatrical lense allows the audience to experience different perspectives within the same scene, and would itself lend promisingly to a play. Great film, highly recommend.
Die Alone (2024)
Unexpected feelings, beautiful cinematography, and an homage to the genre
While capturing some of the most interesting elements of all post-apocalyptic zombie movies, this film combines excellent characters with an unexpectedly dense mystery. It's easy to spot the tributes this film plays to similar films and video games such as The Last of Us with it's scenery, storyline, music, and pacing. The new elements of this film feel fresh, and the turns are unexpected. Although some of the final elements are foreshadowed in the storyline, the main arc itself is well-paced for each reveal, offering a satisfying blend of conflict that uncovers secrets one at a time without cheating. It's not one beat after another, it's a story told in multiple timelines that slowly converge, and effectively resolve the mysteries. I think you'll like this film, and I promise it won't be a waste of time.
Caddo Lake (2024)
Wish more movies took a big chance like this
Really enjoyed the payoff, the mindgames, and the imagination required to make something like this. Rarely do studios put out a movie that is as engaging while taking as many risks as this films takes. The genre-bending style made it compelling and fun to watch.
Due to capture and conservative financial investment, creating a film that delves into such interesting themes is often shunned. Studios should take note, take chances, and focus on powerful stories like this.
Sometimes the best stories are ones where the writers say 'What if...' and just continue, until it all comes together. The development and suspense works well in the pacing of the story. It kept me spinning and eager to continue watching.
Don't Look Up (2021)
A great and engaging satire, a modern Mars Attacks
Look beyond the politics, this film was hilarious and fun and engaging. I enjoyed the stories and the characters from the moment it began.
The high profile actors create a dynamic balance between story telling and character development in apocalyptic end-times comedy.
