Slow Horses (2022)
Great female cast
As numerous others have said this is a great series which should win Gary Oldman plenty of awards.
However, what really makes this stand out are the supporting cast and in particular the excellent performances of four female actors who steel every scene they are in:
Sophie Okonedo
Kristen Scott-Thomas
Saskia Reeves
Aimee-Ffion Edward
Okonedo and Scott-Thomas play the role of jaded department heads/operatives, that would normally be played by male actors, brilliantly.
Reeves is a real surprise playing the dowdy down trodden 'mouse' whilst Fion-Edwards plays the edgy 'rebel' with her usual aplomb.
North Shore (2023)
A pleasant surprise
Ok so this isn't Line of Duty or the Wire but it it was much better than I was expecting due mainly to the two leads who carry it.
John Bradley seems to have mastered the smart cookie hidden behind the soft English 'buffoon' character.
Joanne Froggatt continues to show has the ability to lead. However, if I were being critical it does feel like she's being held back and not allowed to show her full range.
The one irritating aspect was her inability to maintain her 'posh' English accent. It slips every now and then revealing her northern roots.
Don't go into this expecting a breathtaking drama. Take it for what it is. A simple who done it with a great twist at the end!
Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023)
No Alice = No Luther
Absolutely loved the Luther TV series and because of this I probably enjoyed this movie more than other reviewers. I'd definitely recommend it if you want to lose yourself for a couple of hours.
However, I've also got to say that I was more than a little disappointed. It was a real missed opportunity falling well short of the tv series:
1. It's moved too far away from the feel, pace etc. Of the tv series and felt like any other generic action films. For instance, he 'big finish' could easily have been a 'cheaper' ending to a Bourne film.
2. It featured only one other character from the tv series and ended up being lost; neither an extension of the tv series nor a total reboot.
3. But the biggest problem was the missing relationship that drives Luther; without it Luther jas lost his raison d'etre: NO ALICE = NO LUTHER!
