God's Not Dead 2 (2016)
THIS MOVIE IS INSPIRING AND INTRIGUING
This movie is truly inspiring and beautiful. I have been a Christian since I was ten years old and lost my way for many years after coming to terms with my being gay at age 16 - The preacher spoke against :LGBTQ people and I left the church I grew up in that same day.
I went through drug addiction, abuse, bullying, mental illness, and so much more than what a review should say about the person writing it. But God pursued me even after I turned away from Him. In this movie a young girl who loses her brothers and is filled with sadness, devastation, and hopelessness begins to show signs of her inner conflicts and pain to her high school teacher.
The teacher (who happens to be a Christian) confronts the girl in true concern towards what she is going through. (God how I wish someone showed concern towards the bullying and hardships I went through other than the guidance councilors). This teacher also takes care of her disables father.
She lets the girl know that if she needs anyone to talk to she is always there. (How caring, how kind....so many people are not like that today). The girl missing her brother, her parents emotionless towards his death and towards her mourning.....turns to the teacher the next day.)
While discussing her sorrow with her teacher, the teacher asks her a simple question "Did your brother ever believe in something more?" She replies "I don't know? The teacher asks again "Do you?"
A challenging question I would say for someone who was never exposed to a Christian upbringing (like myself). Long story short, the teacher mentions faith in a round about way, faith in Jesus and truly an after life, heaven.
The following day in class, the teacher is discussing a topic with the class about non violence. Long story short the same student brings up a question relating the topic to Jesus. Rather than say "I can't answer that because it is a religious reference" she answers the girl's question in agreement to the Bible and a scripture that attests that the girl's question to the teacher about Jesus was correct. Religious or not, the bible holds and teaches all of the same principles any parent would teach their child in retrospect to morals, forgiveness, and how to deal with many negative events in the lives of every person alive today.
Being persecuted by for this by the school, a war rises. And people begin to become angry at the teacher and wish to use her as an example to make religion or talks of Jesus at school ridiculous. Long story short....This becomes a full blown court room movie - which gets truly suspenseful and mind boggling for those who are not acquainted with a faith based way of life or a personal understanding of faith and the proof of God;s existence only revealed through it.
This movie inspired me in so many ways.....for one when selecting the jury members the accusing council based their choices by appearance and signs of faith or a lack of as did the defense - However some people who were presumed to be non christian by appearance proved the prosecution wrong -
You can't judge a book by its cover is one thing I could find as a message in itself.
Secondly, the teacher could easily had apologized and let these people dominate her and get away with hurting her reputation and using the situation as an excuse to bash all people who believed in Jesus.
Had we LGBTQ people of the world did not protest against prop 8 and for equality we would have been hushed and no one would have won rights to get married as lgbtq today.
Though it was more so Christians who opposed us and put us down - Many of us never associated this to be an act from God himself. I love Jesus Christ and I am gay......We need to stop bashing Jesus and God for the fault of people who use his name in a way to portray him falsely.
This movie inspired so much more and for anyone who needs inspiration and guidance in a hard time and this movie looks like a good one to watch - ignore the anti Christians because they've just been hurt by Christians so much they bash all Godly movies with the exception of the more popular ones.
How can I be gay and a Christian? Ask God because he revealed himself to me in pursuit of me after I left him, fell into darkness, and became mentally insane for years.
I really don't like debating my personal observations/theories/or spiritual intuitions against reviewers directly - but the truth is that most of these reviews seem to be written by people who hate Christians and or Christianity -
Basically people who would match some of the characters in this movie....but I really think it is unfair for any person who isn't a Christian/or pro Jesus' review of this movie to be taken seriously by anyone with a faith in God who is seeking a movie for inspiration or a possible answer to something they are going through,
Dreamgirls (2006)
A Good Review From a Caucasian Gay Man
First and foremost I have seen a lot of musicals in my life the ones I did not like the most we're mostly ones from the 40s and 50s.
this movie cannot be compared to any other musical as it is the most original story and musical of its time.
Though it is a TV adaptation of an old musical it is still a groundbreaking movie for many reasons.
The music has a lovely old school r&b and funk sound with some amazing vocal artist who are actually actresses that nobody truly would have guessed could sing as well as they do.
The story speaks of sisterhood betrayal love and a true undertone of how racism many singers of that day. Not only do I feel changed after seeing this as in the sense of understanding a different perspective of African American musician struggles from a time I was not born.
I had no idea Eddie Murphy could sing so well. Beyonce shines with her vocal ability showing a side of her I've never known not even in Carmen a hip hopera. and the new Jennifer Hudson steals the stage with an amazing vocal talent and stage presence unlike any seen prior to this. the songs are beautiful unique and have a wonderful style in the instrumentation and the vocal presentation the lyrics may not be phenomenal but the Deliverance is.
Unlike a lot of other musicals that choreography is settle because in the African American culture never does anyone have to compensate with choreography when the vocal ability outshines even the best choreography
this movie has rhythm and soul and a unique representation of a subtle true many have forgotten today.
I encourage every person to see this movie who is a musical lover. Honestly I believe a lot of people don't like this movie because of racism. I personally know that a lot of racism exist today and though I'm not African American I was born in the ghetto and all my friends were I am also gay and it would discrimination feels like there is no reason to give this movie a 1 out of 10 I've seen way worse movies in this I give it a 10 out of 10 it deserves it this is not bias.
Beaches (2017)
PERSPECTIVE IS KEY
I am one of the smaller percentage of people who views things as though the glass is half full. Being a fan of many remakes, but more so being a fan of Idina Menzel could make this review somewhat bias. However, I will review this movie remake as though my love for Idina Menzel wasn't reason enough to love it.
I love several of Bette Midler's movies. My favorite is "For The Boys" costarring James Caan. Bette has an interesting way of singing that comes off as though she developed the ability to sing through training alone. Sometimes Bette's singing bothers me. Loving her remake of Gypsy but not truly feeling the classical atmosphere as the original could easily make the average critic not enjoy it.
But we are here to review her movie remake "Beaches" with Idina Menzel and Nia Long. The following are the reasons why I love this remake.
1) New music. You have to be able to stomach Idina Menzel's voice to love the music in this movie. Wicked the musical and both Frozen movies are only 2 places you will hear her amazing unique way of delivering a song.
2) Diversity, I love how her best friend in this movie was a different color than in the original, Being a white male who has connected and related to mostly African american women gives me a personal connection to the changes in this remake.
3) A shorter movie. Sometimes I think people make movies way too long, and sometimes not long enough. The original movie was way too long, often taking extended moments of nothing important going on making my attention span shorter than usual. I felt like the pace in this version was way better.
I am not going to talk about what I didn't like about it because, again I am looking at the glass as half full. Lower budget, smaller names, being a lifetime movie is what hurt the execution and costuming, set, etc that made this movie look less than the original. Plus there isn't much of a backing score when CiCi is not singing. Anyway, I loved it, and will always love it because I am the one who generally loves the remakes everyone else hates - I love Idina Menzel, love Nia Long (Single Mom's Club) - and I find Idina Menzel to have far greater talent in singing than Bette Midler - Love the original - but love this one more
Pitch Perfect 3 (2017)
A nice change
I must admit I am a hardcore Pitch Perfect fan. I loved one and two equally, however, the first one will always hold special in my heart.
I am not going to go into detail about the story line, just read the IMDB summary. What I loved about this movie:
1) The story had more to it than the last one. You come to discover some things about some of the characters you didn't know. Also, there is more time to give the Blellas as individuals than in the other 2 movies because of the shortened singing time.
2) Though some say the plot is predictable, I say there were many surprises for me. And plenty of laughs too.
3) I love this franchise so much, that any sequel made would bring me enjoyment unless they did something so evil as to "Remake" it or even take out the characters we have come to know and love.
I am not one to overly ridicule a sequel to any movie(s) I love based on a pre-determined of idea of what it should or will be. Have low expectations, and you will find much enjoyment in this movie. Expect it to be just like the first, and you will be searching for another hit of your drug choice without any luck. Know that this movie is for fans who love the other 2. Don't take it too seriously, but don't completely underestimate the privilege of getting to see another one. I loved the music, the story, and everything else in between. Only if you loved the first two do I recommend this one to you.
Original Sin (2001)
Step into her mind - But be cautious and prepared!
Julia is to meet a nice Cuban man who she has never met face to face - But the nice Cuban bites off more than he can chew. Julia is not what he expects. However, the Cuban (Banderas) is exactly what Julia expects. There are secrets, and things aren't as they seem - next thing you know - Banderas is chasing Julia to find out who she really is and why she wiped him out of his money and fled. He is in love with her - she doesn't know what she wants or who she 'Really' is. Prepare yourself for a movie unlike any other - Learn what Original Sin means, when you watch this original masterpiece. I would say more but I do not wish to give anything away - this is a movie not to be missed - It has moments that are hard to watch - while other parts draw you in and you find yourself lost in a world of seduction, lies, and murder...but above all, you will learn the power of love.
The Other Woman (2014)
Fabulous - Fun - Funny - Fantastic
I really had no idea what this movie was going to be like. I came across it at F.Y.E. It caught my eye and I read what it was about - Looked like a good movie to watch with my grandmother. Cameron Diaz is great in this movie. But so are the other two women. Cameron Diaz discovers her boyfriend is not being truthful. An Unlikely friendship begins with someone close to her boyfriend. But trust me, Cameron doesn't want to be friends at first. Lies, betrayal and deceit play a major role in this movie. But revenge and karma can be a pain. Join Cameron and two other women who team up to get back at a scumbag. You will laugh and you may even cry - but either way you will love this movie (Warning: Movie may not be suitable for men who can't stand chick flicks).
Pan (2015)
One of the best Peter Pan movies yet
I found this movie to be quite enjoyable. When I went to see it, I didn't know what to expect. And though I wish there was more to it - it is still a very entertaining movie. it's a lot of fun, and the acting was excellent. The story line is much more original than other adaptations. Keep in mind, this is a prequel to Peter Pan - This is how he arrived in Neverland and what he had to go through to save his people. Imagination is vivid in this movie - but they really should have not rushed everything so much - It is one of those movies that make you want more - so that is a great attribute in itself. Definitely a family movie - and very kid friendly. We need more movies like this. Friends begin as enemies and enemies begin as friends. Go check it out.
Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006)
My Favorite In The Franchise
I love Hayden Pantierre - she is a cute little preppy actress who seems to put off a very beautiful and positive aura. What a great choice as the lead character. Hayden plays Britney, a privileged girl; captain of her cheer leading squad - but she is forced to leave the school and go to an urban school where she is snow in a dark pot. Her first run in with Solange Knowles character is not good - Britney is definitely a ditz. But with the help of new friends - she gains something to cheer about. There is a lot of drama in this movie but it is interesting enough to watch. Hayden slowly discovers her own rhythm and even a new romance (Oops, better not let her boyfriend know). Anyhow, Check it out - if you liked the first one - you will like this one too.
Crossroads (2002)
I found this movie to be quite charming
3 friends bury their dreams in a box, making a pact to return after graduating from high school to dig it up. Being that they are children when they bury it, some time goes by and they are now in high school. None of them are close anymore - but somehow they all manage to set aside their (almost) hate for each other, and meet at the spot to dig up their box of childhood dreams. Randomly, they all decide to go on a road trip so Mimi can audition to be a singer. Britney plays the goodie good girl - and Kit is the snob who's engaged - and Mimi is the pregnant one who wants to be a singer. A guy is driving them, and sparks ignite between Britney and him. The rest is to be discovered after you watch the movie. It has a good story and is worth watching - Britney Spears is good in this - and so are her side kicks. Join these girls as they reignite friendship, pursue dreams, and stand up for what they know is right...each other.
Dirty Grandpa (2016)
Do not let your kids watch this
Good Things:
1) Robert Deniro is a great actor 2) It had some funny parts 3) Was crazy enough to keep my attention (whether I liked it or not)
Bad Things:
1) Terrible humor (Disgusting humor) 2) Offensive 3) Not one of Deniro's better movies 4) Very sexual and not in a normal way 5) Couldn't watch this with a 17 year old
So of course I watched the entire movie, even though I was offended not 10 minutes into the movie. The humor is not intelligent humor - yes there have been times when I liked this sort of humor - but I am getting older and I felt so uncomfortable watching this with my grandparents - and not because of them not liking it - they laughed and liked it - I couldn't completely hate it - but the humor was a bit much for me - There are some moments where Deniro and Efron made me smirk - but the script was written as though some senior in high school who did a lot of drugs wrote it - I wouldn't waste my money on it - but if someone else has it - hey, honk that horn - I really didn't like it.
Pixels (2015)
Funny, Cute, and Original
I love a lot of Adam Sandler's movies -This one was no disappointment - Although the story line was a bit "Out there", I still found myself really being entertained. Adam Sandler plays an off-beat character (as usual) - but he really does a great job. But It's not just Adam Sandler that makes the movie good - It's funny story line brings a new meaning to the words "Video Games". When aliens reply to a capsule of video games sent into space when Sandler's character was a kid - Sandler must join forces with a "Few Good Men", to destroy the attack from the aliens. You know what's funny? The aliens send the same video game villains to destroy everything they come in contact with that was sent in the capsule. Now is the time for a battle of video game skills and great courageous tactics. You will see video game characters from your childhood - you will see a bunch of dopey guys trying to save the world - Don't take this movie too seriously and you will enjoy it - I find some comedies offensive - but the humor is clean and family friendly - You gotta see this movie - It's really funny and worth a watch.
Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)
You Must Have An Imagination To Watch This.
I love Alice in Wonderland - In fact I love most fairy tale/fantasy movies. With the first Tim Burton Alice movie I wasn't disappointed, but the story took me by surprise. The same goes for this movie. But the surprise for me was that I really enjoyed this movie. I wasn't sure what to expect, so I went in not expecting much - and though the story line was a little bland - It was nice to see what became of Alice - Also in this movie, you learn things about people you didn't know. Such as the White and Red Queen's childhood. Take a step through the looking glass and follow Alice through an adventure to save The Mad Hatter's family - In a race to turn back time, Alice goes on another adventure and learns some things that cannot change the past, but can change the present.
Warcraft (2016)
I loved the movie - Grandpa plays the game
Me and my grandfather went to see this. He plays the game, however I do not. I didn't know what to expect before seeing the movie. I must say I was impressed for the most part - the only thing I wish were different is that the movie had more to it - I know they must be making sequels. The animation or CGI rather was very well done - needless to say the characters were all very cool looking - I've watched my grandfather play the game, but I must say seeing the movie was better than the game - But i don't play the game so take my opinion as you wish - I loved the story and the actors did a great job (even though it was voice overs). This movie has enough action, and interesting occurrences to keep a five year old entertained all the way through. I would highly recommend seeing this movie for the simple fact It's entertaining and fun to watch.
Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015)
Original - Funny - And Weird
Sally Field is an amazing actress - She has such an amazing ability to fit into any role - and she always delivers. In "Hello, My name is Doris" you meet an older lady learning who she is and what she wants...and then...going after it no matter the cost. It's funny, but funny in a weird way at times - Sally Field is classy - and If you are a fan of hers, then you will love her in this movie - It isn't your typical comedy - Falling in love with a younger co worker guy - and the lengths she goes to so she can get his attention. All I will say...He loves me...He loves me not! Now this movie focuses mostly on Doris (Field) - it shows what a woman who never really lived will do when she comes out and goes after her man despite the age difference and other obstacles - Go watch it now - It's really cute and funny.
The Young Messiah (2016)
A glimpse into the eyes of Innocent Love!!!
Take a breathtaking journey into a year in the life of "The Young Messiah". What was Jesus like as a kid? How do you explain what He went through to become who He is and was? Miracles are in this movie - A question-asking young boy who truly didn't know the power He would later use to save the souls of the Earth. Jesus is played by a beautiful young boy who is very good in his role. With his parents (Mary and Joseph), they flee the town they are in. On their journey, young Jesus begins to learn and do things He doesn't quite understand at first - Jesus as a child is so amazing because even with my being a Christian, it didn't make me look at Jesus any different than I do now (with respect and love) - Forgiveness was yet to be known - but Jesus was more than a forgiver, even as a child - Watch what happens and go see the movie - It's worth a watch.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016)
An Amazing Sequel
I am easy to please when it comes to movies - I keep an open mind - However, I do catch a bad movie here and there. What's funny to me is that this movie is funnier if not as funny as the first. I watched this with my grandparents and I haven;t heard my grandfather laugh at a movie that hard for quite some time. I suppose you would have to like movies like the first one to appreciate this one. In the sequel to a wonderful movie - Tula has a daughter named Paris. Struggling to keep her daughter close to her by trying to influence her to pick a college close to home, rather than go to New York, whichh is where Paris wants to go. You see Tula trying to keep her daughter from going through the same things she had to. Tula's dad is the same only older with health issues. Her mother is grumpy a lot in the movie - and the rest of the family just may surprise you with their laughable antics. A wedding is in the works due to the fact Tula's parent's discover they are not legally married - and Tula's mom believes she's "A Hippie". They're Greeker, louder, and just as funny if not more. Give this movie a chance - you will laugh at least once - You must see this movie.
Ice Princess (2005)
An overlooked Gem!!!
This movie wasn't super popular when it came out. But the same young girl who played Harriet The Spy is more grown up in this movie about following your dreams but not allowing it to hurt other people - Young Casey is a high school student who has to work on a project for her entry for a scholarship to Harvard - She is a science-geek - She decides to analyze figure skating and see if there is a scientific formula to do it well - and for Casey she does it Very Well!!! - I don't want to give a lot away because this is one of those movies where you just have to watch it - I have watched it over 30 times - It is one of my favorites - If you like movies with talent, heart, and goal achievements along with a bit of geek to chic - You will skate your way to the top with Casey in Ice Princess!!!
The Jungle Book (2016)
Adventure! Danger! Better than the original
Take a look into the life of Mowgli - Raised by wolves - friends with a Panther - When evil takes the form of Sher Khan (A tiger) - Mowgli is forced to escape the forest and go back with "His kind". With an amazing voice over cast - and some singing surprises - Never have you seen a version of this movie more enjoyable and surprising - With plenty of action and amazing CGI - this movie will bring out the Bare Necessities in you - Take a walk down memory lane with all of the characters from the original - and then you will be rushing to IMDb to give it 10/10 stars - Even if you don't love the story of the Jungle Book - this movie can enchant the smallest heart.
Risen (2016)
A side of Christ you didn't know
I am not going to say how great the acting is or isn't - or go into great detail of the quality of the movie - I believe this type of movie should be approached for the story - Immediately after the Crucifixion of Christ - The ruler decides to send some men to be sure Christ stays in his tomb - They heard that he was to rise from the dead on the third day - Also they worry that the disciples of Christ will come to steal the body - Fear seems to be the reason nothing works out very well - How can you love your savior if you are terrified at the fact he may be telling the truth? Christ body disappears and a certain man is chosen to find the body. As the rulers scurry about trying to disprove Christ - One man learns some things he never ever saw coming - Take a journey into a new story - one that's not in your Bible - Take a step of Faith and fall in love with Christ all over again.
Cinderella (2015)
I Love This Movie - Very Impressed!!!
I'm a big kid - 29 going on 10 - I didn't care for the animated classic Disney film of Cinderella enough to say this version isn't as good - What I will say is that this is the version that should've been in place of the original - I loved this movie so much - The acting is decent - but Cinderella and the wicked stepmother steal the show - Not to mention the fairy Godmother has a scene to steal, played by Helena Boham Carter - Cate Blanchett delivers some great lines and has the opportunity to show a side of her we haven't seen before - Even though she is wicked - I can't help but somewhat feel a classiness from her character - Lilly James plays Cinderella - And she truly captures the innocent love that Cinderella is supposed to have - It does pay much homage to the classic - but what I really like about it, is that it is a beautiful movie with a great message for the humble "Be kind and Have courage"! Disney always sends special messages through their movies (Most of the time). I love how well the movie turned out - just a beautiful, feel-good movie - Watch it for yourself - If you're a kid at heart and love Disney movies, then you will love this.
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Makes you believe in true love in a beautiful and emotional way!
Two sisters sold into two separate Geisha houses - attempt to flee - While the older sister gets away - The younger sister has to stay - Not only that, her chance at becoming a Geisha is taken from her due to the wicked schemes of an older Geisha who lives in the same house and a heavy debt that she cannot pay - forced to be a servant, she goes about life with no hope - Until she meets the Chairman - A much older man who shows her the first glimpse of kindness she has ever known - Making a promise to herself she decides she wants to someday marry him - When a rival shows up at their Geisha house years later - she decides to take the young woman, who once was the young girl, into her Geisha home to become a Geisha - What takes others years, she must learn in months - While hoping to one day be in the Chairman's arms. The rest you will have to see for yourself - The Cinematography is mind blowing - and it takes you to a place you may have never dreamed or imagined!
Honey (2003)
A good watch - Don't take it too seriously
Although this movie may remind you of other movies - it still is decent on it's own stance - It sends a good message to people - And gives hope for young people on the streets with wasted talent - Honey is about a young woman who gets the chance to become a choreographer for some of the most popular R&B singers - Prior to this she worked in a club as a bartender and also taught Hip Hop at the local community center - Betrayal, lust, hope, fighting for what you believe, and great dancing are the words that come to mind when describing this movie - It's no "Save The Last Dance" but hey - who doesn't like "Honey"!?! - The problem with movies is they are never what you expect - and sometimes exactly what you expect - Don't hold your standards too high because this is no Academy Award winning movie - but it is a little bit of a gem, liked mostly by true movie buffs -
Labyrinth (1986)
On My Top 10
Labyrinth Captivated me since I was a child - I am 29 now - This movie came out one year before my birth - Although I don't remember how old I was the first time I saw it, I am proud to say I have watched this movie at least 50 times - This is what movies should be - Even my grandparents love this movie - The characters Jennifer Connolly and David Bowie play Sarah and The Goblin King in a unique and very magical movie atmosphere - (Jim Henson's puppets are amazing and so darn adorable) - This movie can be watched over and over - and it can be watched by any generation - If you have never seen this movie and you like fantasy movies, then you must see this movie - After an upset teen is stuck watching her annoying baby brother - She says "The Words" and asks the Goblin King to come take little Toby away - This was her biggest mistake but also her greatest choice - For she makes it possible for people like my family to watch a wonderful fantasy adventure that will stick in your mind for the rest of your life. Join Sarah (Connolly) on an adventure to save her Baby brother from The Goblin King (Bowie) - This is a MUST SEE!!!
Stardust (2007)
Best Fantasy Movie In a long time....
When I saw the previews for this movie I knew I'd love it but I had no idea how much I'd love it - This movie is so entertaining - A young man sets out on a quest to find a star to bring to his "Crush/Love interest" to win her hand in marriage - Little does he know, He is not the only one chasing the star - Brothers fighting for the throne are after it - and Some witches want the star - Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert Deniro, and Claire Danes - are the bigger names - And boy do they play their parts well (Especially Ms Pfeiffer) - Magic, betrayal, and love are only a portion of what's in store for you when you watch this movie - Trust me it's a must see - Very original and entertaining from beginning to finish -
Real Steel (2011)
This movie will touch your heart while blowing your mind
When a father is stuck with his son who he barely knows - a robot is found - This leads to Battles in an actual arena - Don't let the robot battle make you doubt this movie, because it actually has a fantastic story line - By the way, the acting is pretty darn good too. Special effects are done quite well - and you can't help but lose yourself in the movie due to the wonderful story line - it's no Gone With The Wind (HA!) but it is unique and extremely worth a watch for a father (Or grandfather) and son (grandson). Lots of action - And who doesn't like Hugh Jackman - He plays a great mean father - but even the hardest heart can be changed with the love of a son and a passion for battle bots!
