Adam Driver tries to carry but let down by supporting cast.
Let's be honest, Adam Driver is immensely watchable. But, the whole enjoyability of the movie is let down by the screen time devoted to the accompanying actress, 'Ariana Greenblatt' who just can't carry this pivotal role.
On the other hand, Chloe Coleman who plays the daughter and Adam's main motivation for making it back home in this survival flick is awesome and makes you root for the lead character.
The film would do better with multiple cuts with the focus being on the action and thriller sequences with the underlying familial motivation as was promised in the trailer. The trailer guys got it right.
The Sandman (2022)
Almost completely ruined by Rose Walker
Such an awesome concept and engaging storyline can be derailed by the screentime devoted to the no-credentials actor playing Rose Walker. So many viewers quit after Episode 7 just because of her acting or lack thereof.
This horrible performance stands in stark contrast to most of the towering acting skills displayed by the rest of the cast. This series could actually be a case study of how bad casting decisions can downright bring a great TV series to its knees.
Definitely recommend giving this series a go. Just do something else when this Rose Walker comes on screen, or you'll definitely pull all your hair out in agonizing frustration and end up with bald spots like me.
Superstore (2015)
1 Star for the one laugh in 5 seasons.
1 Star for the one laugh in 5 seasons.
Maybe great shows on TV in the past two decades have set the bar too high. But this one here has neither the depth nor the humor to fall in any category of comedy.
The characters especially the female lead is terrible. There has been zero character development across the years and the writing is just lazy with the lead actors complementing the mediocrity on display.
This is one of those shows where the side characters are much more talented and relatable than the lead cast.
Personally, I really tried giving this show a shot and but the focus given to the bad actors has made it impossible for me to care and watch anymore.
Watch it if only you are multi-tasking as there isn't much to hold your attention here.
Still Game (2002)
This is so good!
So funny, relatable and just good bonhomie.
Just guys living out their lives in a mellow and chill way poking fun at everything. The little nuggets of wisdom sprinkled in there just makes it all so much better!
Some funny scenes literally made me lol! I was smiling so much watching this that my cheeks were hurting.
Truly, one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. Thank you Netflix for this.
Dhaakad (2022)
Oh Kangana Ma'am...
Kangana is such an amazing actor. Watching the movie Queen actually made me cry. She made me (a man) feel what a woman feels. Hurt as a woman hurts, and in the end dream as a woman hopes and dreams. She evokes such emotion, such empathy from the viewer.. it was out worldly indeed. But, oh how the mighty have fallen. She seems to have stopped perfecting her craft. This role required her to train physically, to acquire the skills that would make her a believable agent. But, the training, the dedication, the passion, the love all seem to missing from her art today. It is almost as if a great actor has died and we, her hopeful fans, are left with a shadow of former glory.
Vaashi (2022)
Could have been better but a weak script and bad casting brings it down.
This movie has some good moments and there are a few sunny spots. Tovino is really good as usual. Even the supporting characters perform admirably. Praise worthy really.
But a poor script and unbelievably Bad Acting by Keerthi Suresh spoils the narrative so horribly. Another case against blatant nepotism promoting bad casting decisions thereby stealing opportunities for deserving actors and defacing good art.
The characterisation of the victim personally seems out of touch with reality. And the ending would seem unfair to some.
A good effort and vision honestly but all the essential parts failed to come together as needed to create what could have been a great movie.
Ustad Hotel (2012)
Pretty perfect movie!
Ustad hotel is an example of how movies should be made. It engages the viewer, develops the characters we see on screen, encourages us to be the change we want to see in the world and finally leaves us with a feeling of peaceful satisfaction.
The stunning visuals with the appealing food settings, the beautiful leads and the scenic locations are a joy to behold. Apart from a few scenes where the cinematic pace falters where tighter editing would have kept interest piqued, the movie is just a perfect little treat to savour and definitely a must-watch!
Colors (2009)
Watchable but not very funny
I personally would have given this a 4 but the lead actress Roma's acting was too horrible. "Cringe" is the word that comes to mind in certain scenes, although she's okay (even good) in other scenes.
The casting director should have cast someone who can fulfill all the requirements of the role and seem believable rather than cast whoever is available.
Dileep felt more like a side character as he has hardly any screen time and even his dialogues weren't upto the mark. The other side characters who are usually so funny in other movies couldn't evoke any laughs in this one.
To top it all, the story takes an unbelievable turn in the end completely destroying the feel-good tone of the movie. The audience isn't even given time to adjust to this new reality before the movie ends suddenly (albeit on a happy note)
There aren't that many flaws in the film, but these few errors hit the audience very hard and it's definitely hard to recommend someone to watch this.
Big Shot (2021)
Not that great! Half-hearted effort really..
Starts off okay and the characters exhibit growth somewhat.
But at the interest of furthering the storyline, all character development gets thrown out the window. People who start out as annoying and then gradually become bearable and possibly even likeable, throw away all their progress just to feed the twist in the subsequent episode.
Also feels like it panders to a very specific female demographic, reinforcing prevalent stereotypes along the way. Characters who challenge the stereotype status quo such as "Mouse" constantly get sidelined and shushed dismissively.
Watch this if you have literally nothing else to watch. A quick viewing would probably be harmless. Nothing more could probably be expected.
Luca (2021)
Lucawesome!
Such a nice movie. The animation is so good. This movie makes me smile. It makes me laugh. And it also makes me think. I loved the trailer and I'm glad I got to see it finally. I loved how the story brought the characters to life and how it highlighted the importance of family. If you just want to see a feel good movie and this is the movie for you, I would give it a perfect 10 as I could not find any flaws in it.
Hope you have as much fun watching it as I did. <3.
Wish Dragon (2021)
Pretty Feel-Good!!
If you're having a bad day and just wanna smile, this movie is so for you.
Watching it feels like such a breath of fresh air in a cynical world.
The story gently reminds that there is so much more to life than just the mindless pursuit of worldly riches.
In an increasingly materialistic modern era, this awesome cast coming to life with such beautifully animated characters feels like a soothing massage for the soul, all the while, whispering in our ear that "Everything's gonna be all right.."
Mmmmhmmmm...
Nobody (2021)
Watch it already!
It's fun, the music is groovy, the fights are totally realistic (like real-world realistic) and "Saul" is awesome!
If you liked John Wick and Jack Reacher, you'd love this one!
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Sadly Disappointing!
I had always wondered about the phenomenal impact of Star Trek in modern culture. The legions of die-hard fans inspired me to give this saga a try.
After, seeing this movie I instead wondered what was so great about it.
Then I read the 1-star reviews and realized that this movie actually doesn't encapsulate anything that made the original great.
Wish someone would do a true reboot which is honest to its original roots.
Sadly Disappointing!
Monsters of Man (2020)
Viewers might begin to question their humanity..
I was having a serious moral dilemma watching this movie. I couldn't relate to the victims of the violence perpetuated by the AI robots. I was wondering.. Why don't I feel sorry for anyone? Why am I not feeling their fear, their terror..? Why am I not rooting for them to escape the carnage?
That is when I realized the problem was quite simply, they were just poor actors. None of the emotions "woodenly" expressed actually transcend across. This movie is actually a pretty good lesson on the emotional conveyance necessary to differentiate mediocre actors from the great ones.
For at times.. when a coy smile just in the other's eyes breaks your face into a cheeky grin..
and at other times.. a horizontal stretching forced on the other's lips is witnessed by your stony glare..
Tom and Jerry (2021)
Disappointing...
Expected a lot more from this movie. Except a few classic Tom & Jerry scenes, this movie will quickly turn that smile upside down. The character Kayla is terrible, just unrelatable and extremely irritating. The plot takes a revengeful dark turn in the middle and the overall character development is so bad that its hard to root for anyone at this point. The supporting cast shine brightly in the spotlight and are one of the redeeming aspects of the film.
The sad part is that it could have been a great movie, but the different pieces just don't fall into place. I really wish I could show this to my nephews so that they too could relive the mirth of the old Tom & Jerry shows but in all honesty, they would probably just be deeply disappointed.
Superintelligence (2020)
Predicatable, Cringe and terrible.
So cliched. The plot is barebones. Apart from the sporadic performances of some of the supporting cast, this movie is so bad.
The lead actress is just so painfully unlikeable and comes across as unrelatable. It seems like she's living out her personal fantasy through this movie. Some of the inspirational lines are delivered so badly that you know the actress just can't portray this character.
A movie is supposed like to be art, leaving you changed when you behold the experience.
This movie just leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth. So tread carefully.
Bard of Blood (2019)
Soo bad it's actually good..
It's good to watch this once to study the lapses in the screenplay, the half-hearted editing and the sloppy direction resulting in the final product being unintentionally funny.
It has been so heavily borrowed from other classics that all one can do is reminiscence about those fine pieces of art while enduring this.
I personally would have given it even lower but the acting in parts is good (especially that of Kirti Kulhari as Jannat Marri and Jaideep Ahlawat as Tanveer Shehzad) and some of the dialogues are well-written even though the delivery leaves a lot to be desired.
One just can't understand why the lead actor is so arrogant even when he needs the help of everyone around him including God to just survive. Watching him would leave the audience wondering: What sort of characterization is this?
If only the makers could show the completed product to an informed test audience, most of the flaws could be rectified although that would definitely require re-shooting and definitely a lot of post-production work.
Honestly, the core team composition and direction seem very sloppy and not up to international standards. Even Tamil and other regional language films have better executed final products.
If you are a student of film making, you can watch this to avoid mistakes like this. This is a classic example of how glaring errors in parts will destroy the outcome and cause that fatal disconnect from narration a.k.a. shaking your head in disbelief which may or may not be accompanied by amused snickering.
Good Intentions. Bad Execution.
Soo bad it's actually good (as a case study).
Padmaavat (2018)
Glorification of everything Rajput, including self-immolation.
The movie begins with a spoiler alert and ends with the social blot of jauhar or self-immolation glorified and phlegmaticlly justified by the leading actress. For audiences who can't believe and are stupefied by what they are witnessing, a speech learned by rote with the possible intention of coming across as impassioned and delivered so unconvincingly and yet "motivates" the rest of the hapless women to join the cult. Audience? Mind Numbed.
One fails to understand all the controversy in India by Rajputs surrounding this movie. This movie is a glorification of hardcore warrior ethics at times, superseding everything including common sense.
The most surprising thing is how the antagonist whom the audience is supposed to hate has much more depth and character development that the protagonists which may be a testament as to the obvious hierarchy of the acting potential of the cast.
The CGI aspect is done in a such a half-hearted manner successfully achieving the effect of complete disconnect of narrative with the audience.
For discerning viewers, I would suggest a clipped version of this movie where the scenes with the antagonist namely Ranveer Singh is compiled and that would be a movie which would still make sense to watch because that is time well spent beholding a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious performance!
Ex Machina (2014)
Visually beautiful but flawed at the core
Sure, the movie is beautiful in its execution. The screenplay is mostly paced well. The actors do try their best to justify the script. The female lead seems more human than robot at times, but that can be chalked up to technological advancement.
But, the stunning visuals and intriguing premise do not draw attention away from the flawed execution of this film. In summation, a self- aware robot kills her creator in the quest for freedom. Who hasn't seen this sort of a plot being played out before? Sure the character-building process tries to humanize the robot. But, in the end, a machine is what a machine does. Contradicting the basic laws of robotics, the robot and her robot accomplice (whom she manipulates) stabs their creator, imprisons her "love interest" - a young programmer, she had seduced to get her freedom and goes out and "experiences" the world. And that's supposed to make viewers sympathize with her criminal actions.
This could have played out in so many wonderful ways. It sure did start off well.
But, the ending is twisted. I wonder how and why the 7.9 rating is justified. Or maybe I need to put morality aside and watch this again.
