Murdaugh Murders: The Movie (2023)
Southerner's Take
As a southerner, it's hard to concentrate on a film that uses non southern actors who try to talk southern. The problem is that from Texas to the Carolinas, each community sounds different. But, non southern actors try to pretend to be southern with same accent no matter where in the South the story is supposed to be located. It is like saying that someone from Boston sounds like someone from New York City. It causes a distraction that is hard to overcome, no matter how hard they try. That assist, this 2 parter is ok. It is a good attempt to tell this story of an American tragedy and a family gone wrong.
Kiri (2018)
The Brakes Were Applied
It's as if the writer threw on the brakes 80% of the way through the series. Maybe even a bit lazy. You're moving along with the interesting story that's inconclusive. Just as you are made aware of who is the culprit, "the criminal", the brakes were applied without an adequate outcome. It is if they were trying to get cute and create a story that left the viewer hanging with the responsibility of determining in their own mind the outcome. Shows like this should have a warning at the start that says "Buyer beware. You may be left unfulfilled by the outcome of this program." It's unfortunate that the ending did not live up to the first 80%.
World on Fire: Episode #1.1 (2019)
Season 1 = Good, Season 2 = Not As Good
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed season 1. It was edgy and gritty, had a realism to the storylines. We feared for the safety of some. It felt like we were watching something that was fictional, but based on historical context and events. Though we didn't care for all of the characters and we believed some aspects were forced, we did enjoy the main characters. Season 2 is another story. It was more like watching Raiders of the Lost Ark. It lost its gritty, realism and replaced it with soft storytelling. It inserted humor. We actually lost interest and only watched it through to the end out of a commitment to the series.
Jury Duty (2023)
Absurdly Funny
You have to enjoy the originality. The wide variety of characters makes this funny. The scenario of a fake documentary, following a fake court case, with all (but 1) of the participants being played by actors is genius TV. It looks, feels and acts like an impromptu version of The Office, but situated in a fake court case. At times I wondered how someone could experience the absurd world firsthand and not suspect they are being "punked!" On the other hand, the 2023 World is a bit bizarre. In the end, the guy took it serious and was was awarded accordingly for his willingness to be voice of reason.
Four Kids and It (2020)
Poor Michael Caine
Poor Michael Caine. After a 50 yr hall of fame acting career, this ET wannabe opportunity presents itself. It tried hard, but failed. Poor Michael should have passed on it and took a role on Dr Who. The movie disaster wasn't his fault that it was so bad, nor was it COVID's. This was at best a "straight to video" movie from the start. Even our toddlers quickly tired of it. Another issue is the presence of some adult language and themes inside of what appears to be a kid movie. Therefore, who was the target market? It wasn't me or the kids. Even Russell Brand is too talented for this low quality, poor special effects movie.
Bros (2022)
Saved From Zero
Is this really a Hollywood big budget attention at theater quality cinema? If zero was allowed, this review would be a zero. This movie took pretending to a new low, as it pretended to be funny (and it wasn't); it pretended to be quality (and it wasn't); and it pretended to be entertaining (and it wasn't). If you appreciate your hard earned dollars, then save your money and skip this pile of poo. Poo might not be a harsh enough description. This is a historically bad movie season made worse with this 2 hr waste of time. Stay home, order a pizza, buy some beer and rent a streaming movie and enjoy your weekend.
The Reef: Stalked (2022)
Shark!!!
We found this in the listings. A reasonably entertaining movie, but this ain't no Australian "Jaws." It more like 90210 meets Bay Watch. Watch it with an alcoholic beverage.
Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey (2022)
Yow!
The only thing "fundamental" about this group is that they were fundamentally abused and deceived by a leader and his group of evil, insane old men with an agenda - accumulating wives in the name of god (little "g")
Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022)
Good, Not Perfect
The new theatrical Downton Abbey movie is good, but not perfect. But, it is in fact an improvement over the first attempt at a 2 hr DA movie made for theaters. It was good enough to hope that a 3rd movie is in the future.
The Murders at Starved Rock (2021)
Costco
The documentary was like a stop at one of the Costco sample counters on a Saturday morning. After the sample is consumed you realize that didn't get enough of a sample to know whether you liked it enough to purchase, but sometimes you wished you had never tried it. After almost 3 hour sample I was left wondering "what was that?"
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
Bad attempt at a British accent
As much as I tried to look past the attempt, Renee Z's efforts to sound British was more of a distraction than a bad accent. It just didn't work for me.
Une chance de trop (2015)
Are cops really that stupid
How is she a suspected in her own attempted murder? What kind of person tries to hide a spouse's murder by allowing themselves to be shot in the back? Would police really interrogate someone who has just woke from an 8 day coma and is recovering from flatlining? Seems implausible.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Excuse Me!
Not as good as the reviews. My wife and I found it boring. It seemed to try too hard to be provocative. Nothing new, bad support characters, poor acting. I'll look for the new BatMan.
A Perfect Enemy (2020)
What was that?
Interesting to the end. Even when I realized what was happening, I was still confused between reality and the subconscious. I enjoyed it, but I enjoy quirky films and filmmaking. Even the end credits rolling backwards had me perplexed.
The Holiday (2006)
Slightly Warm Christmas
Not a great movie; not a bad movie.
It was a sweet and entertaining holiday movie. Grab a coffee, a few cookies and watch it with a friend.
Daphne (2007)
Not that good
I found the movie to be the writer/director's failed attempt at teaching the audience their view of social justice.
Outlier (2020)
Good European Crime Drama
I find most of the Scandinavian crime dramas and psychological thrillers to be very well acted and written; Outlier is no exception. It kept me interest in ways most American shows no longer do.
Cry Macho (2021)
Just Cry
I tried to like it - I really did. I even tried to watch it with an open mind while thinking "just give it time and let it warm up." In the end, Cry Macho should just simply be called "Cry for Your Money Back." Even if you watched it on HBO+ like me for $0. It was unwatchable and I abandoned it after 25% of the movie had passed and it was sinking into the crappy movie abyss. Bad movies are bad even when a legend is involved. "Clint, it is time to retire."
City Confidential (1998)
As good as it gets
This is a show that you can return to and realize it is still as good as you remember. Production value, witty scripts and a unique concept. The two narrators are the perfect vehicle to bring the stories to life.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Ship Wreck
If Jungle Cruise was a Disney World ride, I'd never get on again.
The Rally-LA (2016)
Adios Hombre
Unwatchable! Not sure what the goal was in making this load of poo. Even the movie's name made little sense - "Rally-LA"(?)
Sirens (2002)
Hor-ri-ble!
3 hours of a poorly written story and dialogue. Many of these actors are generally good at their craft. Unfortunately, they couldn't overcome the "writers' block."
Soul (2020)
Boy, Did That Not Live Up To Expectations
I had big hopes for the latest Disney/Pixar film, but it fell short for the wife and I. We watched on Disney+, which made bailing out at the half way point easy. Quite frankly, I was so bored that I probably would have walked out of the theater and requested a refund or credit toward a watchable movie. Hollywood is batting .000 for Christmas movies.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
What Was That?
WW84 was a mess. Was that a badly written movie or a poor attempt at spoofing the TV series? The opening scene of WW as a girl competing in athletic skills games was promising and then the movie took a sharp left turn and ran off a cliff. PTL I was able to save my $$ and watch it on HBO Max. Otherwise, I might have asked for my $$ back.
The Great British Bake Off (2010)
Bring Back the Ladies
I've watched TGBBS since it was first made available to the US audience as the Great British Bake Off. I look forward to each new season. I've even gone back to rewatch past seasons. Matt Lucas is neither funny nor entertaining. He's downright annoying and unwatchable.
