Meiyazhagan (2024)
A movie which will leave you calm and happy
Prem Kumar who gave us 96 , comes back and does a one night story again which leaves us crying and laughing. The guy is a genius who takes the barest storylines and weaves a magical experience.
Arulmozhi a man frustrated and upset about his past is forced to visit his ancestral hometown for a marriage. Again we have Thanjavur as the backdrop as done in his previous movie. The streets and the temple precincts are visualised beautifully in the background never taking centrestage yet making their presence felt.
At the marriage reception he meets a exuberant fanboy relative who refuses to leave his side and seems to know everything about his past in the town. Only problem, Arulmozhi has no clue who he is and cannot find the gap to ask someone the same.
The story then follows their experience for one night. In an era where extreme violence and cynicism is being normalised on movies and society in general, this is a breath of fresh air.
Yes movie drags a bit in the middle but the conclusion makes up for it.
AravindSamy proves he can be a great actor and Karthi again shows why he is the best actor in his family. I think for a remake, there may be actors who can do the AravindSamy role but Karthi's role is the hard one. The sheer innocence and positivity the character displays is extremely difficult to replicate the way Karthi has done.
The rest of the actors are also very good. A great family watch which makes you feel optimistic about society for once.
Vettaiyan (2024)
Not bad but not great either
The film does have two themes unlike the earlier movies of Rajnikanth Bloodfest Jailer and illogical Darbar But the execution gets predictable and boring after a point. Also the punch dialogue and background music for the superstar dont make much impact. Jailer the music was outstanding which was one reason, it was so successful.
The movie deals with encounter killings and the education mafia. Amitabh Bachchan acts as the judge who questions the human rights and legality of such extra judicial killings by the police. His Tamil accent is quite irritating. I seriously don't understand why a Tamil or any South Indian veteran actor could not have played this role. What is this fascination in Rajinikanth movies to fill them with Bollywood actors? The casting of Manju Warrier added no value and the one scene she could have made an impact, fails completely. The best pairs for Rajini were Easwari Rao of Kaala and Ramya Krishnan. This movie had the worst pairing.
Dushara gives a credible performance of the lot. But the show stealer is Faahad Faasil who lights up every scene he appears.
Overall the movie needs a more thrilling plot and suspense elements. The second half is almost a documentary with predictable scenes.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Good scares, great acting but needed better dialogues
I have seen "Midnight Mass" and " Fall of the house of Usher" before this, from same director. And "Midnight Mass" was a masterpiece at every level. Both the shows scored high on the scares, screenplay and dialogues.
"Haunting .." is very good in scares but I found it drags in some places. The acting is top notch from the entire cast except probably the older Hugh, seemed a bit dull in some scenes. The kids are adorable and very good in all the scenes.
The monologues unfortunately are neither profound nor noteworthy which is where the series fails where his other works scored high. Also there is no explanation on why is Olivia killed and rest are not killed. The actor playing Luke is a very handsome guy but the one question I had was, will a lifelong heroin addict be that well built. He looks quite fit and strong compared to what we expect a addict to look.
Its a nice scare and good story to watch overall.
Only Murders in the Building: My Best Friend's Wedding (2024)
Hated the season but loved this episode
This was a bad season with a convoluted setup and too many guest stars with no role of significance. But this episode brought back the fun and the building again into the series. It was a thoroughly entertaining episode which was primarily shot in Arconia. Though I still find the entire plot nonsensical with a screenplay which was zigzagging allover the place, this episode was right at heart. We see the trio solve the case with a very funny ledge sequence by Martin Short and Steve Martin. Meryl Streep is lovely as usual.
Sadly Selena Gomez is again delegated to a side show with no character development. Please please revive the artist in her and give her some story line than just stand around make sarcastic remarks. The artwork was the main attraction for me in watching the series from Season 1.
Overall a very enjoyable episode in a dismal series.
Only Murders in the Building: Escape from Planet Klongo (2024)
Terrible season
I am a fan of the series and have diligently watched all episodes from Season. It started going downhill from Season 3 and now is in the ditch.
You don't stuff dozens of actors in, without a credible storyline and hope it will work out. The feedback from Season 3 should have fairly warned you not to bring Paul Rudd back. His overacting is in epic proprotions here and I never thought I would hate to see him on screen(loved him in Antman ..).
You want to show the struggles of stunt actors then don't do just one episode and go back to handle your huge cast. What is the value the entire set of new actors are bringing in other than prolong the confusion and convoluted script? Why was the Melissa McCarthy episode even needed in the first place? Oh she's funny so just add her skit to the story!
Again where is Arconia in the show? Season 1 and 2 were brilliant because of the way the story gels with NY and the beautiful building.
In all this mess, why is Selena Gomez not getting any character development at all. Season 3 she barely had any scenes now all she does is grouch and mumble some lines. What happened to her artistic work which was phenomenal in first 2 seasons? I am tired of Martin Short and Steve Martin hog all the key scenes. And I want to see a proper story not the entire Hollywood cast. Please bring back Selena's gf from earlier seasons and show the artist in her character.

Promises a lot but underdelivers
I havent read the book but looking at some of the reviews, I think I will now.
As a non-American, I have always wondered on the obsession with JFK assasination. So I expected this series to enlighten me on why does the death have so many conspiracy theories around it and why was JFK so important for the United States.
The first episodes promise to answer the conspiracy part but from the third episode, its like the movie makers lost interest in exploring that part completely and turned the show into a romance movie. It is never mentioned why was it so important to stop the JFK assasination.
I stopped caring for Jake after what he does to Bill. George Mackay gives a phenomenal performance of a young guy overwhelmed by the city , new lifestyle and the compulsions of his age. Jake is supposed to be this great school teacher but he lacks even basic understanding of what a young guy like Bill is going through, sitting all day for more than a year just listening to conversations. He fails to notice his impressionable mind and desires in complete contradiction to his supposedly great connection with young students. Understand from Reddit, the character doesnt exist in the novel at all.
Mid-way the assassination became a side story with the romance being the central theme. They practically stopped the investigation which is the whole purpose of his trip to the past to focus on the love story. Then the sudden realisation towards the end that he has to stop the killing and we have a convenient mess of an end.
I kind of agree with some reviewers James Franco didnt do justice to the part.
Chathur Mukham (2021)
Atrocious movie
After Drishyam, for non-Malayalees like me the expectation from Malayalam industry for thrillers is high and I really liked movies like "Anjaam Pathiraa" and "Joseph". My expectations were dashed to pieces with this junk movie.
Its a horror thriller with some nonsense in the name of science thrown-in. The lead heroine is way older than what she is trying to portray and the close-up shots make it even more difficult to accept this difference. Botox does not help. There really was no need for her to play a younger age in this role. And the guy who is playing her partner had zero character build-up and was a complete dummy. And sadly they have zero chemistry.
The main plot is a guy builds a mobile which can absorb energy from the environment and charge itself. The phone is rejected on the premise that it takes poor selfies. You don't need to be a engineer to see that charging is a function of battery and the camera is only going to take energy from it to run. How on earth can a Selfie alone be impacted by a battery? The camera does not distinguish between a selfie and any photograph. Selfie is a term created by us to specify a self-photo. Why is an engineer working on building essentially a self-charging battery, working with a camera which is a completely different function? He dies in the process of burning his lab. But despite the blueprints destroyed the phone has somehow been manufactured and lands in the leads hands.
The dead engineer's ghost wants to kill all who possess the phone. Why? When his desire was to have it sold in the same name, why would you be angry to see someone use it. Dumbest plot which is followed by the usual cliche of horrors with misuse of scientific jargons. You dont have to be a scientist but at least use basic common sense when attempting such plots.
Golam (2024)
Launch vehicle for star kid masquerading as thriller
The amount of footage , build-up for the Hero was like a Telugu star movie. I had my doubts and turned out to be true. Movie is produced by the rich parents of the lead actor to showcase his star capabilities and the murder plot is just a side show.
The whole premise is inspired from a famous Agatha Christie book/movie which I wont mention to keep the suspense. But halfway through the movie the whole thing is unravelled. The Doctor character has to be the stupidest one who doesn't inform police or journalists with all the evidence collected. Gives his story to the police guy only when he raises a suspicion as an afterthought. You know who did it and why, still your reaction is an afterthought. Especially when you have been collecting evidence for a year. Then Hero wont look so super smart. We also have to showcase his body with a unnecessary exercise scene then a running scene.
But we wont push him for better acting. And we are threatened by a second part ahead..
Raghu Thatha (2024)
Confused plot but is funny in parts
The trailers gave an impression that its about Hindi imposition in TN. The movie doesnt make a direct point on any subject. Keerthi Suresh is an independent thinking woman who leads an agitation to close a Hindi sabha in her village along with her grandfather. She is also a prolific writer who writes under a male pseudonym. Situations change where she has to take a Hindi exam to earn a promotion to stop an impending marriage. The comedy works thanks to Keerthy Suresh, Devadarshini and Ismath Bhanu. But you cannot understand what the director is supporting here. All the North Indian characters speak Tamil. A character called Ranganathan is pledging everything he has, just to get the Hindi sabha in the village open. Why?
The same sabha conducts the exams that Keerthy has to take, that she had violently closed(wonder who will conduct it) but conveniently she has to prepone and take it at a different location. In the end it all leads to a chaotic marriage situation where she talks about the compulsion of culture. Then we have a dialogue where she says she is not against Hindi but imposition of Hindi. But still won't allow the Sabha to be opened. How does opening a Sabha lead to imposition? She had to slyly find someone to coach her for the exam, why not allow a Sabha which can do the same publicly? Overall the director is too cowardly to take a clear stance or present the arguments on both sides clearly. I am quite surprised that this was the same gentleman who wrote such a brilliant Season 2 of Family Man.
Demonte Colony 2 (2024)
Boring movie with boring cast
The hype makes no sense for the nonsensical plot. I liked the first movie in this series. The comedy worked and the horror elements were also interesting. Here the comedy is non-existent. Horror is a mish mash of all Hollywood horror movies with no logic or sequence. And the casting is horrendous.
As all the lead characters in the first part are dead and we need the Hero back, a convoluted non-linear plot is created to save the Hero which involves a twin brother. We see the worst piece of editing/screenplay possible in this whole sequence, might be a good idea to see how to do this in movies like Maanadu.
After linking the plot to the previous movie in the most ridiculous way possible , the movie proceeds to get all its horror elements. Since we cant blatantly copy exorcism and other tropes, they bring a Tibetean occultist to show their creativity. And the irony the lead character is named Raghunandan but they never ever think of reciting Hanuman Chalisa, the most potent weapon against evil spirits. Then when they cant do much with the Tibetean angle, Satanic angle is introduced to prolong the plot.
The horror scenes are prolonged and irritating and not scary in any sense.
Arulnithi is an actor with lot of potential but he has no chance to show anything here. The first part had no lead actress but the side characters were all brilliant actors with great comic timing.
The lead actress here gets more screen space than Hero. And she is the most cringe in all scenes. She is very average looking but that would not matter if she had acting chops. But with bad acting and average looks, you wish the ghosts would get her and spare us the horror of watching the movie.
The side actors(including Arun Pandian) are also insipid with one of the girls overacting to irritating levels. .And there is a third part planned with Pranav Mohanlal!
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Draggging inspiration of "Skeleton Key"
Do yourself a favour and watch "Skeleton Key" which is a way better movie than this series with similar theme. Netflix again makes 6 episodes in a story where 2 episodes would have sufficed. Most of the plot happens in the last episode.
I like Eve Henson generally but here she just doesnt do well as the current Adele compared to the old one. She just didnt act the part of the transformed character too well. The lead actor was just plain awful. He puts on a horrible accent which comes and goes with no consistency. Simona Brown is adequate in her role. Why do they have so many adult scenes which do not add any value to the main story? Thats Netflix being itself to attract more audience.
Also it is never answered why was David at Adele's place in the middle of the night. And if Adele knew he was coming, why was she levitating somewhere else.
The climax as mentioned by all is ridiculous. If a house is burning and you have someone trapped there, normal people call fire services or 911, they dont astral project themselves. Especially when they have astral projected only once unknowingly. And how did she know how to get into Adele's body when she never knew how to do it in the first place. The writer just wanted a Skeleton key ending and built a senseless plot around it.
Schitt$ Creek: Girls' Night (2018)
Annie Murphy owns Alexis in this one
This is one of my favourite episodes. The best part about Schitts Creek is the subtlety in comedy, relationships and character growth. This is a classic example of the same where David is shown a mirror in the funniest and subtle way by Stevie and Patrick.
And the love of Moira for her daughter again comes beautifully out without saying much in this episode. She knows her daughter has fallen for Ted and both Moira and Alexis without saying anything on it exchange their thoughts in such a subtle way. Alexis understands her mother cares in her own wild way. Annie Murphy takes the character to the next level in this episode. Its the most well written character in a series in a long time and the way Annie Murphy portrayed was the icing on the cake.
This was one of the episodes where her performance was mind-blowing, she portrays her feelings completely through her eyes.
Fool Me Once (2024)
Sure they fooled you with a series full of holes and plot making no sense
It did hold my attention till the last episode of the big reveal. Its then you realise the first seven episodes of chase make absolutely no sense. Yes the characters drive nice cars and live in beautiful houses.
Maya Burkett is an ex-Army pilot whose sister and husband have died within weeks of each other. And she finds that her nanny cam suddenly shows up an image of her dead husband. So she starts investigating the whole thing. For someone who has been in armed forces, she is unbelievably indiscrete with revealing stuff to the very people you shouldnt be telling. For example her sister-in-law tells her as a secret that her mother has been paying the investigating officer for months. The next scene you have her confronting her mother-in-law asking her same. The central character is so stupid, you want to go in and shake her for telling everyone everything.
The cop story is very nice and well acted though completely irrelevant to the main story till the end. Even that felt made up.
Almost every episode has a dozen holes and in the end is the biggest plot hole which I cant reveal. Sure they had me fooled.
Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter (2024)
Sad story of tenacity
Netflix brings again a story of how a system failed a kid when she needed it most. This is a story of how a woman Cathy who was forced to give up her daughter as a toddler finds after almost 35 years that she had disappeared from her adopted home as a 14-year old. That starts a unstoppable and indomitable journey to find what happened to her daughter and nail the perpetrators. Its quite clear the wrong kind of couple adopted her. The husband had a history of sexual assault charges, had spent time in prison but no one listened to the kid when she complained to adults about the abuse and molestation she was facing at home.
The systems completely failed her. The biggest enabler is the lady who adopted her who remains in denial till the end ,of the abuse and violent crimes committed by her husband. She keeps talking about love and God, completely wrong understanding of both. Unfortunately she never got prosecuted.
The case still lacks closure in a way, the only story they have is of an accidental death as quoted by the husband which may be a complete lie to protect his image to his family.
Overall a good watch and recommended if you are not in a sad or down mood, it will bring you down further.
The Good Nurse (2022)
Nice watch - simple story
The movie is based on a real nurse who does what the Healthcare system failed to do, expose a psychopathic killer working as a nurse.
Jessica Chastain does a great job portraying the nurse who is conflicted with her friendship for the killer and his other psychopathic side. I read the original nurse's version which is quite close to what the character went through in the movie.
Eddie Redmayne plays Charlie Cullen the killer quite well. But Chastain takes the cake where at one side she is the only one helping the cops get him and also probably the only one who has seen Cullen's good side.
Its a travesty that all the hospitals failed their patients by covering up these killings and it took one conscientious fearless lady to get him behind bars.
The original nurse deserves the highest award considering this guy had caused almost 400 deaths and would have continues his spree if not for her efforts.
OMG 2 (2023)
Bold subject but underwhelming output
OMG was unique for the story and the comedy worked. There was nothing extraordinary about the movie it had its own flaws but Akshay's cameo elevated the movie.
Here the subject is certainly new for Indian cinema and bold for which you have to give makers credit. But the execution was below par with no surprises and a ending which leaves a lot to be desired. And the biggest drawback is how Akshay Kumar is wasted in a role which had a lot of potential.
The main premise is a school kid being expelled for masturbating in a school bathroom after someone secretly tapes and releases the same on the net. The biggest hole in the script is he didnt do it publicly for all to come and attack him. The real culprit is the person who secretly videotaped him. But not once does the father who legally fights for him or any other character mention it or want to find the real culprit. All through they are attacking or defending the act as if he did it in public.
The whole drive in the movie is for a more open society and sex education for children so they have better understanding of things. However the argument this will reduce exploitation is wrong as we know Western countries which have the same in schools still have the same problems of abuse and harassment.
Pankaj Tripathi and the cast are very good but at some point the movie feels like a documentary with no surprises in the script.
Both one and two have same climax where God reveals himself. In one its a moving scene giving you goosebumps, here you feel nothing.
Good idea but extremely weak execution.
Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Aatank (2024)
Very entertaining, needed a little editing in the end
The first Stree was unique, original and hugely entertaining. This part takes off where it leaves us in Stree and brings in another menace to Chanderi, who is even more trickier and dangerous to beat.
The writing is excellent which is why this part works great. The story tends to drag in places but the comedy holds the interest till the end.
Rajkumar Rao performs well in horror, comedy and love scenes. You can feel for his unrequited and unconsummated love for Shraddha Kapoor's character. Shraddha Kapoor does well with whatever little role she gets. I anticipate a part 3 or later part which will expand on her background story, she remains a mystery in this part also. Only part that is revealed, is her connection to Stree. The side characters are awesome and add to the fun. The main guy who anchors and carries the film is Pankaj Tripathi with his brilliant one-liners.
The cameos are good and I haven't see the other movies in this universe so had to look them up later. Will be a good idea for first time watchers to watch "Bhediya" though you are not missing anything in this movie if you haven't seen it.
Overall a great watch!
House M.D.: Wilson's Heart (2008)
Great episode
All through Season 3 you hate Amber then the writers give her such a character arc in Season4 with a brilliant finale, that you are in tears for her. This is excellent writing.
All the actors gave terrific performances. You feel for Wilson and Amber and understand that they were made for each other. On the other side, you cant get angry at House for causing Amber to be on the bus because his guilt is so overpowering, you start feeling sorry for him also. Cuddy's feelings for House are more than apparent in this episode when she stays at House's bedside after he goes into Coma.
Overall Amber was one great character in the entire series, very well written with a beautiful character arc.
Twilight (1998)
Keeps promising but under delivers
Yes the cast is great but the movie keeps up you wondering when will we see a twist or something exciting at every turn but never happens and falls flat.
A good cast with a flat storyline will not make a great movie. Susan Sarandon looks very beautiful and delivers the best performance in a insipid show.
The main story is of a detective who for some strange reasons lives with a famous actor couple after rescuing their daughter. Now why does a fit and intelligent ex-cop need to live like that with no pay makes no sense. He finds himself in a web of deceit when he is asked to deliver cash to a blackmailer by the actor.
When he starts to investigate details as he himself becomes a suspect ,we find that the plot is very predictable and you can guess who did it. Nothing surprises us. In all this, one wonders, how does he afford his lifestyle with no income(yes his boarding is free).
We have a very young Reese Witherspoon who continues to act in same way as an adult.
Wonder how they got Paul Newman to sign this, there really is nothing special for him to showcase, in fact he has the same expression throughout the movie.
Jam (2023)
Impressive premise, cannot be called horror
The movie has a very interesting premise on the impact of sleep patterns on an individual. The acting is very good and I found my interest stayed till the end, didnt find it lagging anywhere like some of reviewers said.
Its a very simple story of a couple battling the issue of the husband sleep walking and how it gets bigger and bigger after they have a baby. The couple loves each other which is one reason the marriage survives despite what transpires to each of them.
You cannot classify the movie as horror though it has scary elements but its more of a psychological thriller.
Its really sad to watch Lee Sun-kyun . How one wishes he had not taken such a drastic step!
Saaz (1997)
Terrible casting, not so great music
I am a big fan of Sai Paranjpe movies and TV shows but this was off mark in many ways. For one the story is too slow and almost has a TV serial effect with the sets.
A movie about two singers should have brilliant music but the movie really falls short on same. I am reminded of Telugu director K Vishwanath whose movies were on Indian music and dance. The key factor in all these movies was the outstanding music. Unfortunately Hindi music does not have a female singer like Vani Jairam or Chitra who can balance classical with commercial to great effect.
The casting is horrendous. If we are supposed to think Aruna Irani is portraying Lata Mangeshkar and Shabana Azmi Asha Bhosle, what were they smoking while casting. Aruna Irani is a good actress but she completely failed to get the character. There is simply no depth in her acting. This was a complex character done with frivolity. Shabana Azmi tried but I could not see a passionate singer in her, looked more like she was doing Arth again. The Indraneil actor has one expression and one way of dialogue delivery given any situation.
And the cake was Zakir Hussain, by what angle did the director think he could act. The guy is a great musician but has zero acting skills.
Highly recommend watch South Indian movies on this subject to understand the drive and passion for music and how it is portrayed especially K Vishwanath Telugu ones. Watch Manju Bhargavi is "Sankarabaranam" or Kamal Hassan in "Sagar Sangamam", thats how you do it.
I don't care how true it is to the two real women, both were scheming ones who didn't allow anyone to prosper so doesnt really maater.
Maharaja (2024)
Too gruesome, brilliant screenplay
The movie should be rated Adults only. Its too gruesome and has some very distrubing scenes. The fact that it got U/A tells Indian movie board censor board is non-existent. What the hell were they thinking giving this U/A? The subject and story all of it is very adult.
Yes the screenplay is brilliant with the twists and turns. First 30-40 mins drags but once it picks pace, keeps it going. I loved the way they ended the arc of the girl child. There are some great performances in the movie.
I just dont understand why are such vivid violence movies being made now. You could have conveyed everything without showing such crudeness.
Overall its a good idea and concept to show, you cant escape your crimes and they will visit you where you least expect it.
House M.D.: 97 Seconds (2007)
Had me in tears
I didn't like the way House was treating the patient like a competition and was just dragging through the episode till the last 15-20 mins. The paralyzed guy's acting was phenomenal. No character moved me the entire series(am at Season 4) but I got teary eyed when he died. Happy that his suffering had ended. House was practically an idiot to force his atheism on a man who had suffered enough. Wilson comes on tops here when he admonishes House for not allowing a dying man his after death beliefs however illogical they may appear. Guy can't walk, eat or do basic things already and he is supposed to agree to lose a eye to extend such a life. And the mess of a diagnosis by the teams lead to it facilitated by House.
House M.D.: House Training (2007)
Good and different episode
Its a quite different episode from usual. Usually they keep misdiagnosing and at the last minute save the patient but here its a disaster.
House is super annoying in this episode, with no boundaries in his relationships. I am only at Season 3 so I dont know if it gets worse. But he is becoming an obnoxious character who keeps butting into Wilson's and Cuddy's private lives. I fail to understand Wilson. There is nothing endearing in House to have him as a friend, he uses you to the core and destroys what you have or want.
This episode belongs to Foreman. His presumptuous attitude towards people at lower strata of society comes back to haunt him. I didn't feel sorry for his misdiagnosis but I liked him staying with the patient till the end. If he had not judged her, he probably would have done a better diagnosis. Doctors should not judge the patients character and make calls. The poor woman died without a chance.
Inside Out 2 (2024)
Good not great
The first movie was brilliant in concept, screenplay and animation. You could relate to the characters. The kids in my family were in tears when Bing Bong disappears. It was the loss of childhood for all adults also. The dream studio was extremely funny. And you are stressed out when Riley runs away from home.
I didn't feel connected in anyway to the characters the same way. Its got a good point but thats all there is to it. The screenplay is extremely predictable. You know she is going to make up with her friends in the end. You know Joy and co are going to somehow land back . In the first movie, every scene was a surprise and extremely creative. This movie severely lacks the same. The only part I could laugh at ,were when the Dora-like character appears. There is no endearing character like Bing Bong, no fascinating sequence like the dream factory or even the "train of thought".
Please don't do a 3rd movie unless you have a original plot and setup.
