The Perfect Couple (2024)
Great plot idea, needed more in "parent guide"
This looked like a great idea for a high-brow who-dunnit, with a beautiful setting, well-known actors, and an intriguing story. However, we only got 15 minutes into episode 1 before we stopped watching because of the frequent use of vulgar language. There was no warning in the parent guide for us to go by as far language- and some subject matter. We prefer not to hear about who is having sex, and how they are doing it. That really isn't paramount for a murder mystery.
So if you prefer shows that don't involve f word cussing, like us, you might want to pass this one. Too bad- it looked like a great story line with some A list actors.
FBI: International (2021)
The music..z
Is anyone else annoyed by the almost constant loud music that runs thru the show? It's hard to hear some of the dialogue and makes me anxious!
The plots are ok, Forrester is a great character, but the nearly constant music makes it difficult to concentrate on the plot.
Does anyone connected to these shows (it happens in FBI and FBI Most Wanted too) read these reviews?? If so, please tell whoever is in charge to tone down all that dramatic music! I can't be the only one who has noticed this and is bothered by this.
Dick Wolf- please lower the level of the background music in your shows. It's not needed as the characters and plots are good.
The Ritual Killer (2023)
Wha...?
This movie is so achingly awful, I'm truly surprised Morgan Freeman didn't walk out part way through filming. Or maybe he did and the second half of his character's image is through AI. At least that would mean there was some kind of intelligence present.
It needs to purchase a plot, secure a script, untwist the meaningless mangle of twists, produce an adequate production, determine a director (a decent director), establish edifying editing, create a collection of characters (believable characters) and basically take all copies of the film and burn them.
'Nuff said. Awful. Don't waste your time.
Extraordinary Birder with Christian Cooper (2023)
Extraordinary Birding!
As a lifelong birder, I was excited to see a Nat Geo Wild quality-level show with a great guide in Christian Cooper. As birders, we not only "birdwatch" but love to learn about the habitats, songs, calls, behaviors, and conservation status and practices of our stunning array of birds all over the world.
This series includes some surprising locations, making it even more interesting. Christian's knowledge and dedication shines through as he guides us to see and better understand our feathered friends. I only wish there were more than 6 episodes and hope the show returns for another season. How about northern Thailand for a location?
Genesis: Paradise Lost (2017)
Don't make decisions based on the 1 star reviews
It's quite obvious that most (if not all) of the people who wrote 1 star reviews of this documentary are not Bible based believers in Christ. Of course they won't like it! We can only pray that seeds of the Gospel truth have been sown, and God will bring about their repentance and salvation.
This documentary is a very well done representation of how it could have looked during the Creation account in Genesis. The vast majority of the people who contribute to this are PhD scientists in the fields they are explaining.
There is a lot of excellent information, much of it detailed in books and videos by these scientists (it's impossible to take notes at the pace of the film)
All in all, excellent!
1883: This Is Not Your Heaven (2022)
Amazing TV!
This last episode deserves a few Emmys and several boxes of Kleenex.
We wish there were more shows of this quality, even though we had to suspend reality in a few plot points, like the end result of Josef's rattler bite.
The Ice Road (2021)
I'm not a trucker.....
....and even I can see how stupid this movie is. Save yourself the agony of sitting through this.
You Had Me at Aloha (2021)
Fun rom-com in gorgeous scenery
If you are wanting a beautiful and light-hearted 2 hour break from all the difficult times these day, sit back and enjoy.
I think it was a great idea to cast Ben and Paige with the married couple "Lee" and Rosemary" from When Calls The Heart- much fun for those who watch that series.
The 15:17 to Paris (2018)
Good movie about heroism
We liked the character development and showing each of the men evolving with their training and experience. And especially Spencer learning how to overcome disappointment and keep trying to find a niche he felt comfortable in.
We very much appreciate that Clint Eastwood campaigned for the PG-13 rating and kept the vulgar language out.
Knowing this was based on a true story (and Alex portrayed himself) made it even more meaningful.
Embarrassing Pets (2018)
Animal lovers will like!
The vets and animal behavior experts use common sense approaches to help pet owners retrain their pets that have difficult and/or destructive behaviors. The show is from the UK and just started airing in the US on Animal Planet (as far as I know). Very interesting and it's good to see the pets AND their people happier.
The duck in the first episode is priceless. I like seeing the variety of animals other than dogs and cats.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
Excellent...!!!
Ok, that's not very original.
When my husband said our next movie from Netflix was one NF recommended..."Bill and Ted something" ... I was like- "Excellent!!" He is 72 and I'm 64 and I had to explain the cult- classic jokes to him...dude! Whoa.....
We enjoyed the dumb kids, from San Dimas- I grew up next door in Glendora.
Good to see what Keanu is really known for. Matrix? What's that??
Thanks for the laughs.
Penguin Bloom (2020)
Beautiful telling of a true story of triumph
Penguin Bloom is a wonderful, emotionally moving movie based on a true story- and the magpie is awesome. They are highly intelligent birds, on par with ravens and crows. And this magpie helped the wife and mom, played by Naomi Watts, to come to terms with, and ultimately cope and triumph over, a life altering tragic accident. The full span of emotions of the "stages of grief" were shown....denial, anger, (bargaining-well not so much) depression and acceptance... and we were moved by the cinematic techniques and characters used to portray each emotion.
The low rating reviewers must have been watching a different movie- one said "nothing here offers a big payout in terms of emotion or novelty". Huh?? This story tugged at all the emotional heart strings, and what is more novel than a bird helping a woman accept her new disability? If they were bored it's likely because they need constant action, violence, gratuitous sex, vulgar language, zombies and the like to be entertained. There are plenty of movies that provide that, that don't require feeling a real emotion.
This is an awesome movie! And the real Bloom family are seen in pics during the ending credits...the home in the movie is the actual Bloom home on the Northern Beaches north of Sydney - Priceless. (I read the trivia)
IO (2019)
Most people missed the point
And there was one. Or several.
If you are expecting a Star Wars/Star Trek type of movie with jam packed, back to back action scenes, amazing CGI cinematography and light saber/phasers hacking off arms and heads - type action...of course you don't like this movie.
It takes someone with an IQ over 80 to enjoy a slow plot- relationship centered- humanity at heart type film.
Yes, there are a number of scientific inaccuracies. If you want scientific perfection, go watch documentaries on the Discovery channel. That's not what this movie is about.
What is the point? Maybe that humanity can adapt. Maybe that we can't. Maybe that love and survival conquers all. The viewer is left to decide how they would like the movie to end.
Excellent movie.
Megan Leavey (2017)
Excellent movie
I'm going to go into too much detail about events in the movie- this is based on the true story of a young woman who joins the Marines because she didn't know what to do with her life....and works hard despite obstacles to become a highly trained and highly skilled Bomb and explosives canine handler.
Heartwarming, chilling in the realistic portrayal of combat, and shows the bond of human and dog.
Great movie- highly recommend!!!
The Surgeon's Cut (2020)
Simply stunning!
This look into these surgeons' extraordinary work and touching private lives is absolutely fabulous, well done.
As a retired ER RN, of course I was drawn to the medical aspects of this expertly done docuseries. I enjoyed those medical/surgical aspects, which are all shown very well. However, the human aspects about these brilliant doctors is what really makes these shows excellent.
I hope Netflix produces more than these 4 episodes!
The Ottoman Lieutenant (2017)
Beautiful scenery and story
If you put aside the historical revisionism regarding the realities of the slaughter of Armenians (1915) ...this movie is beautiful, with a lovely score musically thruout. The love story between Lillie and the Turkish Lieutenant (mutual) was as romantic as the attraction between Lillie and the American doctor was disheartening (unrequited).
Go into this movie for the enjoyment of the story ...especially the tenacity of Lillie to always find a way to help others.
Lymelife (2008)
Why is this awful movie called LYMElife??
As a 25 year sufferer of Lyme disease, 20 years of that misdiagnosed as "fibromyalgia" I was expecting and wanting to see more about Lyme, since Alec Baldwin had (has) it.
Instead I suffered through the stupid anachronisms and dull, boring dialog and looking for something related to a plot.
Basically this is what I found: In the early 1980's two dysfunctional families with teenagers become intertwined to make a bad movie.
Falling Inn Love (2019)
Not great but not that bad
You would think from all the negative reviews that this movie is horrible. Many of the hater reviews had variations of the word "cringe" and that made me suspect they are from the same person with multiple profiles! Haha
This movie is a cute Rom-Com with yes, a predictable plot and average acting, but it is uplifting and light and made me feel relaxed. It's not meant to be a "Sleepless In Seattle" or a "Titanic" movie. Just enjoy it for what it is.
I love the goat!
The Space Between Us (2017)
A fun fantasy movie- not a space documentary
I read all the bad reviews and sure, there are poor plot points and bad science and all that, but this movie is not a scientific documentary.
If you can relax, overlook the short comings and just enjoy the movie as a semi-sci-fi, teen romance entertaining type movie, your blood pressure might come down a few points.
The scenery alone is beautiful. The interplay between Gardner and Tulsa is more charming than cheesy. Relax.............
Survivor (2015)
Pretty decent and enjoyable movie
Reading thru the reviews, I was surprised at how many were so harsh and negative. Survivor is not the best action/thriller movie, but it certainly isn't the worst. I enjoyed the A-list actors like McDermott, Brosnan and Milla.
It has a decent plot with a few issues- for example, why Abbott didn't try to disguise herself when she was on the run, why the "world's best assassin" can't seem to kill Abbott (a very common issue in many of these types of movies) etc. ... but it was complicated and twisty enough that you need to pay attention. Some parts are fairly fast paced, the dialogue is sometimes hard to hear, some of the characters resemble each other such that if you aren't paying attention, you can miss some of the plot points. Maybe that's why some of the negative reviewers didn't like the movie- they couldn't follow it.
This is an enjoyable action movie that is worth the time and if you have Netflix like we do, it doesn't cost anything.
Priceless (2016)
Excellent!
Priceless was an enjoyable movie with a powerful message. My husband and I very much appreciate movies without the completely unnecessary foul language and gratuitous sexual scenes- and although the subject matter deals with the very dark side of human trafficking and prostitution, it is done in a way that conveys the awful situation without blasting you in the face with graphic scenes.
The acting was mostly well done and scenery beautiful. So I won't give out too much of the ending, I'll just say we found it satisfying. And you don't need a movie with the quality of academy award winners to get across a very important message. Reviewing lower budget movies like "Priceless" by comparing them (or reviewing them with the same standards) as multi million dollar award winners isn't realistic- these movies are more message driven. And can still be enjoyed.
For the folks that criticized a faith-based film with faith inspired messages....well, the negative reactions are predictable. Of course people who don't believe in God will probably not like a movie that contains messages about God. Of course non-believers will think movies like this are "preachy" as they are intending to be. To each his own. So take those negative reviews in context. There are plenty of movies out there that have all the obscene language, graphic sex and violence, and worldly themes- it's refreshing to watch a good film with an important theme without all the garbage.
