Almost Mercy (2015)
Fantastically unique film that's DEFINITELY worth a watch
I really didn't expect much when I found this movie on Netflix. Usually when I see a horror movie with names more recognizable than the title, I get concerned. However, I was pleasantly surprised.
You go on this dark ride with two misfit kids as they grow up in Nowheresville, USA. Bill Moseley (from House of 1,000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects) and Kane Hodder both play their parts just as well as expected, but I have to say the two stars really shone brightly and seemed to take their roles seriously. Without spoiling anything, it was wonderful to see such a strong female lead who kept her clothes on and stayed interesting.
If you're a fan of horror, I think you'll have the stomach to handle some of the darker elements of the film, but understand that what you're going into is more like a dark, dark, drama that just has more than its fair share of blood. The visuals are striking, and some of the scenes are designed to make the viewer uneasy, but instead of gore, they mostly use psychological elements to make you cringe.
The soundtrack fit the mood perfectly, and really added to the ambiance of the film.
I went in to this film looking for something to kill some time, and what I ended up getting is a new favorite. I've recommended it to all of my friends, and now I'm recommending it to you. If you're looking for something different, you've found your film.
ATM (2012)
This movie just won't let you enjoy it.
I went into this movie with an open mind. After all, the premise seemed so delightfully old-school, and as a fan of the old slashers, I was just glad to get a break from all of the possession movies (not that all of them are bad).
Wow. I'm not even entirely sure where they were trying to go with this. I would love to give some sort of a small plot summary, but it's difficult to do so when it's this convoluted, slow-paced, and dull. I really did try to find some excuse to like this movie, but it wouldn't let me.
There are plenty of reviews here that can give you 1,000 reasons not to watch ATM, but I'm here to tell the people like me who love the old masked slashers and are hoping to find some glimmer of suspense or character development, don't. They would have been better off going over the top and trying to make this movie campy, but they didn't do that either. They just left us sitting in an ATM with a couple of people that have zero chemistry with each other, waiting for the credits to start rolling. Don't worry, if you find yourself halfway through it and you think to yourself, "I guess I'll just see how it ends. I can make it another 45 minutes." Please just save yourself some trouble and read the synopsis. The ending will only lead to frustration, confusion, and disappointment.
