Reviews
Warrior (2011)
Outstanding
Sometimes I feel I need to write a review to right a wrong. This is one of those times. I believe that this is one of the greatest films of all time The writing, the acting, the directing, the photography, the score, and the editing were all of the highest caliber. It is wrong that this film did not win several Oscars. Apart from the injustice done to all who made it, the lack of Oscar recognition is a tragic missed opportunity to encourage thoughtful, deep, deeply artistic, and deeply moving film-making. When I think of all the millions spent on truly stupid films and then think of Warrior, my heart hurts. I would like to say something directly to those who collaborated on this masterpiece: I thank you with all my heart for this beautiful and moving work of art. I hope that you will not be discouraged by the lack of proper recognition for what you did, and that you will make more films of this quality.
Jane Wants a Boyfriend (2015)
Really Enjoyed
I really enjoyed this film. I feel that it was both well written and well acted. The writing and the acting share a common quality. The quality is lack of pretension. The writing deals with a real and increasingly common problem in an unpretentious way, and the acting does the same. Because of this, the film is engaging, endearing, and --most importantly-- moving. I learned from this film. I grew from this film, and, at the risk of being pretentious myself, I would say that I am a better person because of this film. It is indeed easy to lose touch with the normal emotional needs and abilities of people who are emotionally challenged. What hits me so hard is that this one problem can serve as powerful paradigm for all of the foolish insensitivity we may have to others because of our callous and simple-minded generalization and categorization of our fellow humans.
Carol (2015)
My Highest Recommendation
I wish that more films of this caliber would be brought to the screen. I wish that Hollywood would dedicate more money to art and less to the mindlessly sensational. "Carol" raises my hopes for the future of motion pictures. The film is a love story of the most classic kind. There is nothing new or striking in the plot. It is as old as life itself. Rather, the film exquisitely, delicately, beautifully, romantically, artistically and heartbreakingly portrays two people falling in love and then facing the challenges that their love faces. The acting of the leads is, I believe, in a class far above the norm. It is inspiring and should, I believe, be aspired to. The film ends with a subtle moment of beauty so powerful that I can only describe it as a sledge-hammer to the heart. I give "Carol" my highest recommendation.
