Something Undone (2021)
Started well but went down hill
This really could have been much better if the main male character wasn't such an idiot. For someone to believably have had a successful podcast series, he is incredibly inept at talking to people, easily manipulated and self-involved. He has no foresight and doesn't even bother to keep things to self-insure himself to counter blackmail. His character just isn't believable. It's more like an 18 year old set out to do a podcast and through a series of impulsive decisions pissed off the mafia or something. I really liked the first few episodes, once they go to the Island it goes downhill. It's a pity as the acting is good, just the plot is ridiculous.
The Head (2020)
They should have stopped after first season
There were some things that didn't quite add up in first season but it was enjoyable and had a few twists, especially if you are only watching casually and not paying attention. The plot itself isn't particularly original - murder on research centre, everyone goes a bit mad and increasingly paranoid. The motives of the characters are pretty run of the mill. The second season was really quite ridiculous but if you're looking for absurd, almost adolescent, plot it's watchable. However, there are some things that don't make sense. I won't explain them here because I don't want spoilers. If you make it to end of second season you'll know what I mean. If they make a third, I assume it will be space station or desert.
Annika (2021)
Enjoyable but nothing new
I really enjoyed this but it isn't anything unique. It's really hard to do something original in police procedural. At the heart of all crime shows is that humanity is deeply flawed. Some of us go to extremes and commit crimes, most of us just make very bad decisions in our lives. This show takes detectives making bad decisions in their personal lives a bit far. I'm not sure why UK detectives have to be single parents with wayward teens - it's possible to have neither of those things and make bad decisions. I found some of the plot lines a bit predictable and the bad decisions in personal life very predictable... it would be so much more refreshing if characters occasionally didn't give into temptation.
Significant Other (2023)
Nice balance
I really enjoyed this. Light hearted and well cast . It starts off rather depressing and the characters are constantly in a low mood . The doctor at the hospital reminds me of a lot of interactions as a person wtih depression with health professionals . Very believable. The males character is clueless in a very believable way. The female character is less clueless but also less well developed. I wish she had a bit more depth but also don't know if that would have worked. The pregnancy at the end is a bit far fetched but the responses of the characters are very believable. Basically, i liked it because it was a bit different.
Riptide (2022)
Mixed
The premise isn't believable at all. Was this a first draft? Apparently this recently-wed middle-aged woman has no friends in the area - when her new husband is missing, she weirdly accepts intrusive support from her neighbour. Her ex-husband lives nearby and has a storage locker, she apparently met her new husband whilst she was his masseuse. Yet she has no friends in the area, forced her teenage daughter to change schools, presumably public to private. The Police apparently have no interest in the neighbour, even after it shifts from missing person to murder case. The entitled kid from the husband's previous relationship isn't convincing, he is a caricature rather than a character.
