The Complaynt of Scotlande (1549) gives the following onomatopœiac rendition of the sounds made by these ships in battle,
"...I hard the cannons and gunnis mak mony hiddeus crak, duf, duf, duf, duf ... the falcons cryit tirduf, tirduf, tirduf, tirduf, ... than the smal artailye cryit tik tak, tik tak, tik tak ..."
