Koganei (小金井市 Koganei-shi?) is a city in Tokyo, Japan. The city was founded on October 1, 1958.[citation needed]
As of July 1, 2011, the city has an officially registered population of 116,055, with 56,296 households and a population density of 10,243.16 persons per km². The total area is 11.33 km².

Geography

Geographically, the city lies approximately at the center of Tokyo, and is located about 20 kilometers west of Shinjuku, where Tokyo Metropolitan Government has its headquarters. It is flanked on the north and the south by two large parks. To the north is Koganei Park, which includes the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, a branch of the Edo-Tokyo Museum located in Ryōgoku, Tokyo. To the south is Nogawa Park and Tama Cemetery, two of the largest green areas in Tokyo.
Transport
Koganei is transected by the Chūō Main Line, and is served by the Higashi-Koganei and Musashi-Koganei stations. It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach Musashi Koganei Station from Tokyo Station by Chūō Line. The distance between Higashi Koganei Station and Musashi Koganei Station is just 2 km, which takes about 2 minutes to go by the JR Chūō Line[citation needed]. Additionally, Shin-Koganei Station on the Seibu Tamagawa Line serves the eastern portion of the city.
Economy
Gainax and Studio Ghibli have their corporate headquarters in Koganei.[1][2]
Education
Universities
Hosei University, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology、 and Tokyo Gakugei University are located in Koganei. International Christian University, officially located in Mitaka, lies partially within Koganei.

Koganei operates its public elementary and junior high schools. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Board of Education operates the following public high schools.
