Two bits

Two bits is an older term used primarily in Canada and the United States to refer to the amount of 25 cents. The term is derived from the fact that the Spanish real, a coin worth one-eighth of a Spanish dollar, was called a "bit" by North Americans when that coin was widely used in North America (see Bit (money)). While originally a significant amount of money, with inflation 25 cents has come to be worth little, leading to a change in the meaning of the term.
