I work with many mission-driven, sustainably-minded clients, so convincing them is rarely an uphill battle. But “sustainability” is still in its experimental phase—kind of like “gluten-free” was. We’ve come a long way from cardboard-tasting wheat alternatives, and now we have delicious options. Sustainable products/practices are still young, and as designers, it’s our job to inform and educate. We need to break the misconception that being sustainable means sacrificing something. Once that belief is gone, the conversation gets more accessible. Until then, it’s up to us to guide clients toward sustainable choices—whether or not they come with the label.

I like to start with the building envelope. Applying Passivhaus design and minimizing the systems within the building. Reduce complexity and map the outdoor environment with respect to indoor.
