Almost every student and client I work with faces this challenge. I always recommend an "inside-out" method.
1. Make a list of 5-10 people who are closest to you.
Communicate what you're looking to accomplish and how they might be able to help.
2. Make a list of 5-10 acquaintances (basketball buddies, book club members, fellow school parents). Make a point of connecting with each, but start by making the conversation about them, not you. Ask how work is going, any challenges they're facing. They'll ask you in return.
3. Join relevant groups on LinkedIn and actively ENGAGE on a regular basis.
4. Most importantly, make sure to train yourself to listen for opportunities in every conversation, whether it's intentional networking or not.
