Changes of such magnitude require a thorough and disciplined replanning of the project. The cost of scope changes (e.g. dollars, time, risk) needs to be assessed by the project planning team, reported to the client, and formally accepted by the client. Yes, be flexible but--more importantly--be rigorously disciplined in managing scope changes and ensure that the cost impacts are born by the client--and not by your project. Operational concerns about team flexibility are irrelevant until the project is replanned.

The SMART combination enables that goals are realistic.
