When the team is split, that implies some staff members are on board with the Lean initiative. Launching a pilot with team members who support the idea will be a good approach to make the principles and the upcoming change visible and more tangible for the sceptics, and gain their support for the project.

A pilot is indeed a good way to show the benefits of Lean. I would suggest that it be done as kaizen blitz (normally 3 to 5 days) in a work area involving the employees. I have done many and the results have always been outstanding. It involves 4 steps: Plan, Prepare, Perform, and Perfect. ‘Perform’ is the actual kaizen blitz event. Plan and prepare means just that. You need to establish the agenda, determine who will facilitate and who will participate, and prep for it. The agenda would depend on what is the aim. It could, for instance, be converting production from push to pull, and doing a first wave of 5S activities. The kaizen blitz is then followed by ´Perfect’ to continuously improve (kaizen).

These small-scale initiatives allow the team to apply Lean concepts in a controlled environment, testing and refining their understanding. Through hands-on experience and collaboration, the team can better grasp the principles and see their impact firsthand. Pilot projects help build confidence and consensus, ensuring everyone is aligned before scaling Lean practices across the organization.
