The North Star is the company's strategic goal and mission. It might be arguable and disputed, but if you keep changing the strategy to address revenue goals and user experience, it isn't easy to communicate the organization's direction. Now, one can plan and get alignment on all stakeholders, ensuring that those are relevant goals and finding how they can be aligned with the organization's strategy. Chasing individual goals it's very hard, and organizations can't say "yes" to everyone. Moreover, if everyone knows what's the organization's goal, mission and values, people are empowered to find solutions and work out their differences to achieve a common goal.
