First things first, fix up your LinkedIn profile. Make sure it markets you to the positions you are striving for, and not where you were. Seriously, lose the car selfie and take a nice profile picture, customize your wallpaper, and write a great headline and about.
Comment on people’s posts; positively, of course. Start connecting to people you know and then people in the fields you are interested in. Treat them with kindness and respect, complimenting, and certainly remembering to thank them. Join LinkedIn groups and attend online events where you can meet others.
Don’t be afraid to reach out to people. Be authentic, be willing to give more than receive, and be positive.

In today’s virtual job market, building a strong professional network is more important than ever. I advise clients to start by actively participating in online industry forums, sharing insights, and engaging with peers. Setting up informational interviews via video calls helps create meaningful one-on-one connections with professionals in their field. Additionally, maintaining a consistent online presence, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, is crucial for personal branding. Regularly posting content that highlights their expertise can attract attention from industry leaders and recruiters. With these strategies, clients can successfully build and nurture their network in a digital world.

To help my client build a professional network in a virtual job market, I’d guide them to leverage platforms like LinkedIn to connect with industry professionals. I’d encourage them to join relevant online groups, attend virtual conferences, and participate in webinars where they can engage with others in their field. I’d also suggest they reach out to people with genuine interest, starting conversations by commenting on posts or sharing insightful content. By fostering authentic relationships and following up consistently, they can gradually expand their network and unlock new opportunities, even in a virtual space.
