Dealing with a client who keeps shifting career goals. How do you guide them towards clarity and success?

Navigating shifting career aspirations requires a flexible yet structured approach: 1. Deep Discovery: Engage clients in detailed discussions to explore their evolving interests and core values, helping them gain clarity on their true aspirations. 2. Dynamic Goal Setting: Utilize SMART criteria to craft actionable goals that can adapt as their objectives evolve, ensuring a clear and actionable pathway. 3. Ongoing Reflection: Regularly revisit and refine their career plan based on new insights and changing circumstances, maintaining alignment with their current vision. This adaptive strategy ensures that clients can navigate their career transitions effectively, turning changing aspirations into actionable success.

To guide a client who frequently shifts career goals, encourage self-reflection to identify their core values, interests, and strengths. Help them set clear, realistic objectives and break them into smaller steps. Regular check-ins can ensure focus, while exploring long-term visions can prevent constant changes, leading to clarity and success.

Invite the client to detach from defining career goals and instead redirect their focus toward defining and prioritizing personal values (e.g. nature, travel, social justice) and work values (e.g. autonomy, leadership, and remote/hybrid arrangements.) I work with the Firework™ career coaching framework which engages my client with exercises and homework that helps to build real clarity around values. Those values then help inform personal and work goals, which in turn then drive the client's brainstorm of compelling career options, fully aligned with the client's priorities. It may require a more complex road map to enter that career, but it will be more likely a gratifying decision long-term.
